Bumped to 2nd Place by a Spammy, Terrible Website, Please Help!

For the past 6 months or so I've had a niche website quietly ranked for a low-competition keyword receiving nearly 10,000 searches per month. Conversions weren't astounding, but even off of what would normally be considered a "non-buying" niche it makes $150-200 on complete autopilot.

Unfortunately, i noticed traffic was down and that I was no in the #2 spot instead. The website that is currently beating me is god awful. It's your typical spam site, with much less content on the ranking page than mine, written in bad grammar, and provides no value at all, only filler lines about "what you'll learn if you sign up with me" and gross keyword stuffing.

Considering I've built an authority site that actually provides information, helps people, and even gets linked to all the time by others on yahoo answers and the like as a resource for the niche, yet can still be beaten out but such a spammy site (he copies one of the vendors in the niche's opt-in forms and email series word for word) is so discouraging.

This site has been a labor of love for me and I really want to get it back to where it was. If any of you has any advice for doing this, please let me know. If there's any certain backlinking strategy, or if there's a way to report their site to google (if mine gets a manual review it will likely stand as it is a real, large, information-providing resource, theirs will not), or if that's even advisable.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer,

- Brandon

Chances are the just got a lot of attention and shot to the top, but will settle down and get pushed down where it belongs in no time.

If its a junk site it wont last at the top, you may want to take a look at where they are getting links from though and see what you can take on board from them.

I wouldn't worry. If the site is as bad as you say then I'm sure the Google will take notice and put it in its place soon enough.

As we've all seen with the downfall of low quality sites recently, the big G hates stuff like that.

And, if Google doesn't pick up on it soon, the people searching for your content likely will. The people who really need the info you've presented will eventually land on your site because it doesn't sound like they're going to get what they need in the first site.

      Keep adding great content.

One tip - because I've had this happen - check your meta description in the search result listings. I've been able to recapture some degree of traffic when I've dropped a spot or two by writing an attention-grabbing meta description. (Not like those that say "Don't buy this scammy something or other until you read this!" but more like a personal, authoritative, description of the meat of your page.)

Hard to give you a good example without knowing the content of your site and you may already have a great meta description but having just gone through this exercise on one of my sites, I can tell you I regained about half of what was lost when I slipped one spot just through a 10 minute meta description rewrite and waiting a day or two for the new description to be picked up by Google.

If it is how you say it is you will be back on nr1 in less than a month.
What interrests me, how its it possible that the ''crap site'' rissen to the top.

Do you have market samurai or something so you can post a schedual here of the competition?

Also, did you know the ''crap site'' before or is it completely new?
Last thing, do you have a EMD? (exact match domain)

Same here, which is why I posted about it yesterday. I don't understand how Google's algorithm misses theses sites. They have little content and huge amounts of spammy backlinks from blogs. One site has stayed in no. 1 position for over 8 months.

First thing I would do is to check out the full link profile of the spammy site to see what kind of backlinks they have. If it really is a crappy site, they probably will bounce (HARD) out of that first spot very soon.

For good measure, I would also add a little fresh content if you haven't done so recently.

    The good guy approach?

Work more on your site and de-rank him.

    The bad guy approach?

Head over to Fiverr, buy 4-8 spammy backlink packages, wait for backlinks to get noticed by any checker, then report him as a spammer @ Google, providing all backlinks you can find.

    Sad, but true.

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

Haha intriguing but I think I'll just focus on my site. I did just add some fresh content to the site and am getting that submitted/syndicated elsewhere so hopefully this should help. Just a little frustrating when I've been an authority site for many months and get tons of thank you emails every day and interact with the community, and here comes this nobody with a one-page generic wordpress BS that jumps from spot 5 or 6 into #1... I mean come on, Google, get your you-know-what together...
