Logo Design.......Help To Find Clients

by Rob-T

Hi

I'd like to be a freelance vector logo/brand designer but I'm just not sure how to start finding clients.

I've no money to pay for advertising so I just don't know how to begin.

I have a weebly site with some examples of my work but not sure if I'm allowed to post it here, although it is my forum profile.

Any suggestions and help would so be very much appreciated.

99designs.com is a graphic design competition website. I believe it's owned by the same guys that own Flippa.

Why not ring around to some local businesses and offer your services free in exchange for a review from them. Once you have a few reviews you have credibility, now you can start ringing offering your services for a fee.

Once you have some credibility and some good reviews you can launch online too. Find a good solid method of promoting your website (lots to be found on the WSO forum) and approach small online companies who you think have a poor logo and show them your work. Build from there.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've looked at a few competition based sites and it's not really the route I'd like to take, but thanks anyway.

I was actually hoping to do most of my work online. I'm not really good at this whole internet marketing thing. I may offer my service to some people on here for free in exchange for recommendations. I want my service to be more of a personal thing rather than just a faceless website and hopefully gain clients by word of mouth just through high quality professional work.

Not a bad idea. How much does it cost to post an ad in Warriors for Hire?

I may even try my services on ebay for a little cheaper until I've made enough to advertise.

Does anyone know what the standard price is to have a professional vector logo produced?

What is your website? You can advertise your URL in your sig. I recommend you read forum rules before doing so.

Did you check Fiverr - Hire people to do things for $5

Start up a website offering design.

Then open up some special offers at the most popular forums offering good discounts on your service. For example at this forum in the warriors for hire section. <- lots of customers.

Start up at different service sites, like Fiverr <- lots of customers.

Then you can also start contacting local businesses. <- customers that will pay ALOT for the work.

If you want some extra money you can start joining freelance competitions, at for example freelancer.com or 99designs.com. <- quick good money if your design get picked.

Once you got some money rolling in, start paid advertising.

You can start up a gig on Fiverr.

There's a fair few of logo designers that always have a queue of orders on there... so there's definitely room for more designers and there's many buyers.

Unless you're looking for more profitable work.

It's a good idea to link to your weebly site in the description. Then people can see your example work and if you're good, you'll get flooded with orders.

    Good luck!

For some local work, I would do two things I would offer your services on Craigslist. There are always people looking for stuff there. It does not hurt to put your content there. Next I would add a Gig on Fiverr.com and start creating several gigs. Look for businesses locally that have a logo that you can improve and or revamp and make a new one for. Do a FREE Design for them and show them the work. I would do it on youtube and then do a sceen recording. Then show them their new logo you created next to their old unattractive logo. If they like your work you are sure to get the job or they might refer you and recommend you.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers,

    Alex

    Hey Rob,
Why not edit your signature here on the WF.
Go to USER CP on top left to edit the signature.

Put in some text with what you are offering and a link to suggest people check out your designs.

Then set yourself a number of maybe 15 good quality posts a day here.

There you have it. Instant, free marketing.

I would start by making a page on Social networking sites, put some of your works, add some fans. Go on freelance , oDesk , Fiverr etc, it really depends on your skills. But the main thing you should do is to focus on a little portofolio, people will not order if they don't have a clear idea about your skills.

Use your signature to promote your site. If that is your original work in your profile, you're good enough to bid on projects at Elance.com and guru.com and other freelancing sites. 99 designs and Fiverr is for chumps who want to give their work away.

Pay $20 for a Warriors for Hire thread.

Wow guys, thanks for the help. Some great ideas here. I think I'm going to stay away from Fiverr and the logo design competitions. I've used Fiverr in the past and with regards to creating logos it becomes more like a production line than trying to offer a very professional personal service. I'd rather just do good, honest quality work and gain a good reputation for my service.

I've been wondering for ages about how to setup a profile sig, so thanks Onora for the suggestion and Patrick for the instructions and the idea for free advertising. I've setup my sig but it's not showing up, I guess it's due to lack of posts.

Thanks for the kind words, yes they are original designs. I may take a look at Elance and Guru to start me off. Also I didn't realise Warriors for Hire was only $20. I'm sure I can come up with that.

I made a lot of money from Elance when I used them for my graphic design work. My minimum for doing a logo was $300 ... add in the stationery and brochures and any other branding pieces and the price went up accordingly.

Be aware that there are a lot of lowballing offshore providers and in the beginning, I priced my work very low until I had a lot of references and a portfolio to show.

        Hey Rob

Fellow logo designer here too, don't do so much now but it's a soothing pleasure when I'm not IM'ing.

The way I did it was to use as many resources as possible, get your foot in the door and you'll begin to build a steady clientele. Look for web designers who need logos done and build on the back of their clients. I know you mentioned you don't fancy 99designs but winning some jobs there can offer recurring client jobs.

Use free resources like local online classifieds and don't underestimate the warrior forum because there are plenty of needs here. I recommend getting an image signature like mine below as opposed to just a text one as it will increase conversions massively.

        Good luck!

            Hello Rob,

You might want to have Logo Design Services Packages:

            Logo Design Basic
            • Customized to your business needs
            • Web and Print ready formats
            • One Logo Design Concept
            • Up to two revisions on the selected design
            • 8 Different Sizes of the Logo
            • Source Files sent in PNG, EPS and TIFF formats.

            Time Frame : 2 - 4 Days

            $40.00

Then for your next package, you can name it to "Logo Design Silver", increase your price a bit. But for the design concept, make it 2 (the basic package has only 1) You may adjust the time frame to 3 -6 days as well. Moreover, for the revisions, you may have it up to two revisions on the selected design."

After that, you can proceed to your next package, let's say "Logo Design Gold."

Following that format, I am sure you can have these packages as many as you want.

            Obviously, you should have portfolios.

            Hope that helps!

            More power, mate.

            Thanks,
            Louie Tugas

There is good money in graphic design, but you have to be tactical with logo design as there are a LOT of logo design businesses out there selling some pretty decent work for really low prices.

If I were you, I'd start out by contacting web design businesses and asking them if they're interested in outsourcing any logo design work to you. Many web design businesses are always on the lookout for contractors. This is a really great way for you to get business - I do it myself with several SEO services.

Whatever route you go down, you will need references and real-world portfolio entries. Offer your services for free to charities and non-profits; especially new ones that may not have any kind of branding or identity yet.

Start a small website with examples of your work and a way to contact you, a simple wordpress one will be just fine to start with.

Post a gig on fivver to make basic designs, that way you can get some sales and reviews of your work. Might be a little less that you would like but you gotta start somewhere.

Start branding yourself, set up facebook, twitter, youtube for your design bussiness. Post adds on craigslist and start driving traffic to your site.

I think stock logos is a pretty decent site you can check out, you can have your own portfolio there and join contests if you like. As far as I know they are pretty much on a high end level there that they may just ask you to remove your logos if they are not that good and sometimes they can even ask ban your account alltogether.

Great, see if you go to elance & search in design / multimedia section, you find this:

    Graphic Design (988)
    Logos (440)
    Other - Design (436)

After you will filter each subcategory, you will be able to find more than 60% projects according to your expertise which is far better place than anything else. So keep yourself concentrated & keep your eyes open...

My advice, and its not pretty...is say NO to freebies, spec work and other online avenues that don't pay you fairly for you time.
The internet has turned most things into commodities and that includes logos, printing, websites, etc. I say sell the value that comes with doing business with you and if they dont realize the value, explain it to them or move on to another client. Saying no is hard when you need clients but I find that if you use your intuition, you will thank yourself for walking away in the beginning than dealing with the nightmare they will become.

Differentiate yourself somehow and do something better than others in your area. I do logos and my minimum is $500. This includes a client consult, 3 concepts and a few revisions of one of the concepts. I position myself as if it were my company and interview the business owner to find out what the purpose of their business is and get a strong understanding of what their goals are. Collect deposit and hit the drawing board.

$500 @ $75 per hour is 6.5hrs. Factor in consults and revisions and it is easy to hit that mark. The $75hr comes from what I need to make (according to my business plan) to cover overhead and expenses, insurance, (time off) and all the other things that cost money to run a legitimate business. I am not working out of my moms basement and I have 3 kids to feed. I am in business to MAKE MONEY. PERIOD.

I hope this helps, sorry for the rant, but it is a tough market when everything is a commodity and people don't understand the value behind the creativity.

PS- Go to local networking events, meetups, etc and talk to business owners in person about their logos, design work and experiences with local designers. It will be invaluable. Show some genuine interest and you might even pick up a new client.
