Why you can't write FAST

Currently, I'm doing a survey.
I will collect 200 feedback and see what is actually stopping people from writing fast. (From this forum and from other random survey)

I have collected some feedback and they serve as the template answer.
Please pick ONLY 1 from the list below and post it at below. The one you pick must be your no.1 obstacles which stop you from writing fast.

    Were I you, I would add a poll to this thread. It'll make your life a lot easier. :-P

    You may have to delete this one and re-start it, but again.. much easier. The poll options are at the end of the "additional options" menu at the bottom of the new thread creation page.

      My biggest problem is I over-analyze everything I write and have to go back and change it several times before I'm happy.
      This makes writing a very long and boring task and I also get distracted easy so that doesn't help things either.

        This is my problem too. I'm constantly rewriting, adding things, ect. I proofread it several times. Then I find things that I don't like and change them again. Last week, I wanted to write a 1000 word article and the more I researched the topic, the longer it got. The article ended up being 8000 words long. It took me 3 days to write it!

        I can rewrite PLR relatively fast, but when research is involved, I'm slow as a turtle. I can barely manage 2000 words a day. I think it's amazing when some people claim that they can write 20 articles a day. I wish I could.

        That's why I still pay other people to write articles for me; some days, I just can't face writing.

    The easiest way for me to crank out fast articles or reports is to know exactly what I am going to say before I say it.

      It's all in the mood.

      When I know what I should write, I can complete an article of 400+ words within 10-15 minutes. But when I am not in the mood, I can't even complete a single article in 30 minutes. So yes, focusing is the real game here.

    I think my biggest problem with writing is a lack of focus. I normally end up writing while doing other stuff, which is virtually impossible in my opinion. It's kind of difficult to be watching football while writing an article! I just can't sit for long periods of time writing something, it is something i have always struggled with.

    7) Other - I can write fast IF I do an outline first. Unfortunately, I skip the outline most of the time and dive into the writing. When I write w/o an outline, I'm much slower because I'm thinking on the fly of what to write.

    I think my biggest writing issue is that I want my writing to be perfect and unique without any grammatical mistake. As a result, I spend long time searching for topics that nobody write about before. So, I spend my time gathering information, writing and rewriting. And at the end I feel overwhelmed, loss my focus and stop writing. Plus, I am not a native English speaker and I used to write in academical style so I feel it is little bit hard for me to write in friendly style because I am not used to it

    But I searched for solution for this problem to increase my writing speed and I am still doing my best to overcome with this problem .

    Here are some tips to increase your writing speed

    You need to divide the writing steps into three days
    - first day search for information only
    - second day brainstorm and write
    - last day proof read your article

    I hope this will help who face problem with writing and make writing experience more enjoyable

      Doing the research to write original articles is what slows me down. I get side tracked into unrealted but interesting topics. I also find it hard to find good reference site for soem topics. So much of the information online where I do my research is...ummm...well junk. Anyway thats what slows me down. Once I have the research part done, writing the article is easy to me.

    Easiest way to "write fast" is to use the voice recognition software "Dragon Naturally Speaking"

    It also gives your copy or content a conversational feel - so it doesn't sound "corporate" or "salesy".

    Call me crazy, but maybe if people would stop trying to crank out content super fast there'd be a lot less garbage on the Internet.

    Writing is a craft. The best writers (who also take a lot of pride in their work) are aiming for high quality and not racing against the clock. Then again, they're also charging premium prices because they value the time they put into their work.

    Number 6. There are times when I already have the idea in my head, but it suddenly ends up spinning in circles then causing me to experience writer's block, or something like that. It's like when I want to expand something, it just ends there, but the idea's still in my head; I just can't write it down.

    I can only agree with Cali16. That said, it depends on your definition of "fast." The subject, type of writing, and depth of research all factor in. One of the fastest writers I've ever meet (online) was an experienced war reporter who she might be able to crank out an article in 15 minutes with research at hand. And that's just once, not all day.

    Many people here seem to think one should be able research and write 15-minute articles hour after hour and then they wonder why their cheap writers start missing deadlines and eventually disappear.

    Anyway, as for increasing your speed, I find deadlines help. You'd be surprised how much focus and confidence a rapidly approaching deadline can impart.

      I write fast. When I know what I want to say, it comes in a snap. When I don´t... I take all the time I need to research, and after I do, I write fast.

      And then... it comes editing until it takes its true form. That can take a lot of time or nothing depending on the project.

      For me writing is a little bit like making a sculpture. In a sculpture, you allow the real shape of a stone to become. In a written piece, you allow the message, or the idea, or the story to condense into reality through you.

    I can write fast but with my native language. With respect to writing English articles, I can sometimes write fast but I am not sure if the articles are in great quality.

    An American friend told me once that the first step in writing fast is to remove the perfectionist mentality.

    I deliberately write slowly, and keep trying to slow down, not to speed up.

    Because, with writing in general, quality is typically in inverse proportion to speed, and quality (not quantity - contrary to what some people wrongly imagine) is what primarily determines the results.

    As a full-time, professional article marketer, I'm well aware that "numbers of articles" have very, very little to do with my income. How easily I can get them published in front of already-targeted traffic is what determines that, and that invariably depends on quality. It's possible to attract floods of highly targeted traffic from very small numbers of articles, if their quality's high enough.

    Conversations like this one sometimes perplex me, because they often seem to be based on some tacit consensus that "writing faster is necessarily a good thing to try to do" ... and for me that assumption is simply wrong. Indeed, it's partly because so many people mistakenly assume that, without ever examining or analyzing it at all, that the overall success rate with "article marketing" is so very low.

    Writing great quality content is a time commitment. However capable you are of writing fast, you will always be able to improve the quality by taking your time. I understand there are time constraints for some people though, particularly freelance writers like myself. The time I put in is really about how much I'm being paid to write.

    Relatively speaking, I'm a slow typist. Sure, I can use voice recognition software, but if it requires punctuation to be inserted, it stalls the creative process and derails my train of thought thereby making for a less natural read.
    I also find myself rereading what I wrote to makes sure it makes sense. This causes me to slow down because I keep rereading instead of trusting what I've written and delegating the editing to a later time.
    In addition, I have a tendency to be verbose due to having a good sized vocabulary. I'm not trying to be pretentious, it is really just the way I communicate. I cannot help who I am.
    I think the one thing that might help many writers to write faster is to first get the thoughts down and edit later. Otherwise, you can get caught up in unnecessary time consumers like rereading.
    On a side note, I find it interesting to see other people's writing processes.

    I write quickly because I have to. When an idea comes into my head I have to get it down on the page quickly before it disappears (the joys of getting older and more stoopider).
    I don't write much professionally these days because I can't edit. I can only read something I've written one time, occasionally two, then I can't look at it again. The one read-through isn't enough to get all of my 'fast' writing into good shape, and I can't bare working with editors , so I don't write :confused:

    most people find writing tricky, but can hold a conversation for hours on end, with views news and opinions.
    I dictate all day into my iPhone or whatever is to hand and transcribe later, expanding into a more "written" tone.
    I find this works best, as a talker not a writer.

      This is great advice. I have an app called Dragon Dictation that is very good. It's intutive and almost always accurately takes down what I say, unlike a lot of others.

    I'd say luck of focus is the cause when I am writing slowly, ( as usually I am busy with many subjects at the same time..) , but most of the time I am quite fast, its editing later that takes a little bit more time.

    Definitely number 6! I love to write about almost any subject and I love to research ones I'm not familiar with, but I am easily distracted. I basically need complete silence to work, and that's not always feasible. I find that noise canceling headphones work in a pinch though.


    I would definitely like to see the results of this.
