Wife asks me "what business can I start, and in 3 months, quit my day job..."

by mmixon

Wife comes home from school today and says "I will be off in June, July and August. Do you think there is something I can do online, that will make money where I can retire from teaching?"

She is internet savy, does social media and wp websites, and helps me with my Private Investigator business, a really smart lady, but she is just tired of teaching. She can devote 10 hours a day, 6 days a week for 3 months to develop an online business that really generates income, and I will be there to help her when she needs it.

I really need input from the warriors in the forum as to what you would recommend as a business model.

Thanks in advance,

Mickey

List building, email marketing and product creation.

She has a whole lot of time to do research, so I assuming for about 5 hours a day for a fortnight she researched a topic then created a product on it - then that product would be very, VERY good. I can research topic for about 2 hours then make a decent product in another couple of hours. So if she devoted that much time to it I would assume that she would make a great product.

List building because well... if you build a decent list - which can be fairly easy, its just a bit tedious- that is an easy, passive income.

Its all long, hard work in the beginning but if she has three months, then that is actually quite a long time. She could definetly start getting in to this and making herself some money.

I think she could create a membership site, offer a service such as SEO or social media management or do an article writing service and get there.

A teaching job doesn't pay much so I imagine if she can hit the 3-5k a month mark, that will be enough to quit?

If so, service businesses or membership sites are a great way to go. Tell her to start brainstorming ideas now.

She can give up offline teaching and get into online teaching. Tutors / Teachers are required online too. If she can pick up the subject that she is comfortable with and master the same by creating video tutorials, text lessons, set question papers or the like, there is huge money available online. People are willing to pay to get useful stuff online.

She needs to learn to develop a website, create plenty of videos, create text lessons in pdf, prepare question and answers guide, conduct periodic online tests and act typically like a real time teacher doing all that is required to bring up a child / adult.

This way, she need not give up her 'teaching profession' and she is experienced in this profession, there is nothing like pursuing the same online.

    What do you say?

EXACTLY! Teaching in a tangible location has a limits. Teaching online means that the world is her classroom!

Mickey, I think this is an excellent idea for your wife. It will give her a change of venue, yet keep her in her teaching comfort zone. There are so many options like the online k-12 available in quiet a few states and online universities also.

Do you know of people doing this successfully? It really depends on the area of expertise.

It is to easy to hire online tutors from sites that are already developed with a full curriculum in place such as Educate Online and others.

And just for the record most of those teachers (who do need to be certified) are paid around $10 per hour even with a Masters Degree. The idea of working home in your PJ's isn't as appealing when you are making a fraction teaching online of what you would make in a regular classroom.

She should try the HCF Affiliate Program. I got my initial investment of $200 for 100 articles and 1 domain(I built the website myself) in the two first two months. Now it's all profit.. It is not wise to quit your job until you've got a year's salary in the savings account, so realistically, I would say that she should work on the business she chooses in those 3 months but continue her job until she has money in the bank and her business is actually making at least what her salary was.

I don't know about quitting her job in three months, but ghostwriting is a good way to bring in money and get paid quickly via Paypal. Marketers are always on the look out for unique, high-quality content. The income isn't residual, but it's a good place to start. Once she has generated some income from that, you could start blogging as a way to generate passive income.

Many people do not realize that these online teaching jobs usually pay about $10 an hour, even with a Masters. They do not pay what a regular teaching job in a private or public school system would.

And as the OP said, his wife is tired of teaching. She would be trading one teaching job for another one that is most likely much lower paying with few if any benefits.

In fact answer to this question is difficult. But here's simplest answer I can offer,

    - Select a niche (Make sure people in niche should be obsessive or hungry to buy)
    - Then select a good product that can convert for that niche
    - Buy domain name and redirect domain to product affiliate link (who is protection is must)
    - Make attractive flyers for your website don't forget call for action
    - Now visit place were people interested in your niche usually hang around and Distribute flyers to them.

This is really simple strategy but worked for most of the people, I hope this will help you collect good amount of money so that she can take good training before she can begin her online adventure.

If not teaching online, she can even set up a resource center for teachers. I am sure she has plenty of great materials and ideas that other new upcoming teachers would love to access. There are plenty of sites that have special membership access areas that you have to pay to enter, while a lot of the resources are made free.

It won't take too long to setup if your wife has the resources to put up there, and once it is setup, she doesn't need to give it too much attention once her school resumes. If she enjoys it, she can expand and offer relevant affiliate products including tutorial services or school textbooks for sale on her website as well.

    • Physical product sales. eCommerce, like Dave Hermansen says. Other avenues are more speculative.

If she gets moving now and figures out what niche would be profitable, she could be positioned for big 4th quarter sales.

I would not recommend starting a website. Websites take 6 months to a year to gain traction. There's plenty of opportunity selling all kinds of stuff on Amazon.

    Hi Mickey,

Good question and many people are looking to make this transition from professional to online professional.

I think it's worth looking at your wife's background as a teacher and leveraging that. Being that she is a teacher with experience, I'm sure that with some research, she could find a common problem that teachers have and currently are experiencing.

Then, she could create an information product at overcoming that particular problem and launch that, with affiliates within the teaching/education market offering the product for a commission to their customers/email lists.

The idea would be to build up a list of buyers which she can provide additional products/services to, for example skype coaching, group coaching or 1 on 1 coaching/mentorship etc.

This is what I am currently doing and I truly believe this one of the best, most future-proof models to make a stable and decent online income.

Hope this helps, let me know if you would like some further information or ideas.

    All the best,

    Tim

Stick within the teaching/education area, just do it over the internet instead but get some help and scale up. If you want to start your own empire then just recruit others and act as an agency as well, a bit like an online or virtual school if you like with your wife as head teacher. There are no limits to how big you can make it!

The first thing your wife needs to do before considering all these good suggestions is to ask herself a few questions.

What does she like to do? What does she want to do? What could she see herself doing day in and day out without going crazy?!

If she chooses something just because she thinks it will make money, she could very easily lose the drive and desire necessary to make it a success, especially if she is going to be putting in heavy full time hours with the new venture. On the other hand, if she follows a passion or desire she has a very good chance of making decent money over the summer.

Everyone would love to make their full time income online but its far easier to make money IMO offline than online. I'd advise her that the internet is simply another method to advertise a real business. Look for a business that costs almost nothing to start, can be done on a very part time basis and one that delivers a quality product or service that people want so there is little sales skills required to find paying customers.

Everytime I advertise my offline MomsWithCamera.com business online through Groupon or LivingSocial I get anywhere from 50 to 150 new clients overnight and after expenses average well over $500 in profits per customer selling fantasy portraits of children to their parents and most times I hire high school students to take the snapshots for me. Selling fantasy portraits is like taking candy from a baby and far more fun and profitable than limiting yourself to a pie in the sky internet dream.

Start with a real business and advertise it online instead looking for a online business opportunity. Looking for a online business opportunity won't make you a dime but marketing a real business online can make you rich!

I know this sounds arrogant but it's the truth.

        Cheers,
        Steve

I should have qualified my answer. I taught for some years before opting to quit and stay home with my kids.

When I decided to get back in the work force one of the first things I did was to look at online teaching opportunities or developing some type of curriculum. I was hired and took the training for one of the largest educational companies in the US, but decided it was not for me.

Unless you have a very specialized knowledge the teaching opportunities do not pay very well. And I did not see a market for a curriculum in my field that was not already covered and covered with resources beyond my capacity. Sure it could possibly be done but I think it would be a big struggle. Not something someone looking to replace their salary quickly wants. In addition, it is not like you can just fling up your diploma, you should meet state standards which includes fingerprinting etc.

Anyway I was already doing some ebay and Amazon sales and I ended up getting into Revenue Share writing. Within a short time my residual income was more than what my teachers pension for the few years I taught will be. And then I branched into my own websites and products.

This might seem like biased advice since I work in this industry, but selling natural health products is a good way to go.

It's interesting to write about (meaning you don't have to spend money outsourcing a lot of content), and once your clients run out of their purchased product, they will usually come back and buy again (providing they are happy of course).

Health products appeal to a worldwide audience as well, and there are literally thousands for you to choose from.

I think your Wife would enjoy it, I also used to be a teacher BTW so I can relate to your Wife wanting to move on.

Your wife needs to find something that creates a residual income that will continue to pay her for work she only needs to do once. It would also be great if it was completely free and could also make residual income from the work of other people.

You didn't mention if she is comfortable with sales, but the first link in my sig is for a business that meets all 3 of the criteria in my first paragraph, and much more. To be honest, she will be successful much faster if she actually does some offline work and goes out to meet local businesses. It can be done online, but sales of anything is usually better face to face. I have built about 90% of my business online, so it has taken me longer than some of the other people in my business.

    Hi Mickey

You can easily start a service with her support. First try to improve the skills and do service yourself and wife. This will help you to understand the business and take more orders. In the mean time, try to get customers from offline connections. When you have enough orders, hire few VA's to handle your new business.

    Best regards

OP states that the wife wants to retire from teaching, yet the most solution given on this thread are 'online teaching'.

Why not have a chat with your wife were you tell some stuff about each sub niche in IM and how you can apply it other niches as well. I would recommend not to go in the IM niche as this niche needs a different approach of marketing.

I've found the idea of a membership site the best idea, as it creates residual income. Now she only has to find a niche she wants to work in.

Being that she's a teacher perhaps she would enjoy like someone else said being a teacher online. If not she can always start with offering services or flipping websites.

She can also start a blog about her passion, and with a bit of optimisation you can start monetising it. Probably won't be enough to quit her day job in 3 month, but a nice additional income source is always welcome.

Make sure she goes after a niche/subject/topic/whatever she is passionate about.

I think a mistake a lot of us made when we first entered the industry was picking something that had the potential to be the most profitable INSTEAD of something we were truly passionate about. These short-term sites then quickly died off due to lack of interest.

If there's one thing I could tell someone just getting into AM or making money online - pick a niche that truly interest you and go for it. The passion is what keeps the lists alive, the sites updated with fresh content, and the sales coming in.

Its all about the idea imo. You can do something just because everyone tells you to do something, or you can accept the fact that 95% of people giving you ideas... well thats all they are giving you, just ideas.

Also, when a person is asked to divulge ideas for another person, as opposed to themselves, they tend to just say whatever comes to their head first. If they are asked to figure out an idea for themselves, they usually reject the first idea that comes to their mind.

This is why for creative stuff, I usually always depend on myself. For technical stuff, logical stuff, I depend on the tech geeks. You can ask me right now "what would be a great way to make money", and honestly I'm giving you a list of all the things that are underneath my top 10 money making ideas.

Like I always have these major ideas in my head that I don't really talk to anyone about because I value them that much. So if anyone asks me for help, last thing I will ever give them are THOSE ideas. I wanted to respond to this thread saying something like "find a niche, find a starving market, build a salespage, get social proof, then sell to that starving market". Thats the "idea" I would give you, which is really just a watered down representation of a specific idea I don't want anyone to know about.

Thats why I've never understood why people look for specific money making ideas on this forum. I just could never understand.... if someone actually has a VALUABLE idea, why on earth they would ever want to share it with someone. I've studied psychology enough to know most people are selfish, and there is no such thing as 100% altruistic behavoir.

Not trying to be negative just trying to be rational about things. When Frank Kern realized there was a MAJOR market for pick up, pua, seduction, he didn't come on a forum telling people "you need to sell dating seminars and you need to do it exactly like this". Instead he got rich first, then after he got rich he showed people how to cash in on his "profitable" idea, by showing them how he did it AFTER the fact.

He had already capitalized on a unique set of circumstances leaving virtually no real room for anyone else to do the same thing. Noone else could come in and do what he did because his idea was highly sensitive to timing and our culture. A major book had been released (the game) and he knew he had to work fast to profit off it.

I view essentially all marketing concepts or ideas under that same light. To really succeed, you need to see what NOONE ELSE sees. You need to see value in something where everyone else is blind to seeing that value. Then most of all you need the confidence to know WHY the idea will work.

Call me a pessimist but I just don't trust anyone. You can come off like st. mary, I don't care how "down to earth" someone is, EVERYBODY is at this game for themselves. It will always be like that, so to really make it big, you got to believe in YOURSELF MORE THAN ANYONE AROUND YOU!

I would go with affiliate marketing to start with.
If you go that direction you may want to study someone
like Ewen Chia who is a affiliate marketing expert.

He has some of the best training on affiliate marketing i have
    seen.

Lots of good suggestions. Thanks to all for contributing.

I tried affiliate marketing and built over 100 websites, but it just never made any money for me.

I have seen several posts for social media marketing expert or social media certification. Sounded interesting anyway.

Anyone making any money as a social media manager for a company or group?

I would agree with Ryan, start building a list. Also, most teachers are good writers. (I am a former teacher myself.) I began publishing on Kindle and have made hundreds of dollars since December. It is not hard and just a secret tip....dinosaurs are a HOT topic on Kindle and selling like hotcakes. Perhaps your wife could write about that? Hope that helps! I know what it is like to live on a teacher's salary too. If that is her special calling, then it is worth it. If she wants more, she can "teach" from a website everyday with a post in a certain niche that she is passionate about.

    Hi mmixon,

If I had a wife who is good at teaching, I would advise her to start learning using skype and offer online coaching. This special coaching, she can set and schedule her time with the customers.

    Hope this helps
