Odesk Questions

Hi,

Just a quick question about Odesk. Someone might be able to answer.

I hired someone to do SEO work for me about 3 weeks ago.

I gave them 10% up front. So far i've not notice any changes. My sites is not listed in the top 1000 of google for any of the keywords I gave him ( 3 total )

He takes days to reply and keeps saying he's working on it etc.

Is there a away to cancel the contract and get the 10% back ?

I know i can cancel the contact. but it's getting the 10% back that i'm worried about .

    You are most likely going to lose it. There is no mediation for fixed price jobs - they are non-disputable because you pay for the final product. And if you give someone an upfront pmt on a fixed price job, only they can choose to return it to you. Support might contact them for you, and ask them to return it, but there is no one there that will "make" them do it. Did you ask the contractor directly?

    Fixed price jobs are great there, because you can cancel the job no questions asked - but if you make an upfront pmt, and they screw you, you are pretty much SOL.

    ask him for link building report...if he fails then cancel the contract immediately....or before cancelling u can talk to odesk support using live chat for that 10% return

    if the seo guy fails to send report , say tht to support...saying that no work done...the support might need proof of ur point

    As the owner of my business, I get to establish business guidelines. One of my primary guidelines is

    "I do not pay people to frustrate me!"

    That being said, let me offer a few suggestions.

    I have 5 Star rating as an employer at oDesk. I ignore request for up front payments.

    Break down larger projects to begin with. Offer small jobs to get a feel for how you and your contractor will work together. You can even test-drive more than one contractor for a given job.

    If 10% is a major financial hit for you, you are probably are biting off more than you can chew. Start with smaller job postings. My first oDesk job was a $10 data entry project.

      Thanks for this reply. Some good points.

      10% is not a lot to me. But it's not the point. It's the point that someone took my money and it doing nothing for it.

      I do have 5 star's I don't think i'm on it as long as you tho. I've only spend 800$ I've hired about 10 people so far over the last 2 months.

      He's taken my money and set a project back 3 weeks. i think the set back is the more annoying thing.

    You can't get back upfront payments unfortunately, but try your best to convince the worker to do your work. Sometimes promising them a great rating helps a lot, since a lot of contractors would do anything for a good rating.

    Besides that, I get why some workers would demand upfront payment if you are a new employer. However, if you are a well rated credible employer then you should not pay upfront. BTW, there are other sites that have escrow systems for fixed price jobs and there is no concept of upfront payment. You only pay if the work is done properly! Maybe you could switch over to them.

    Sorry to hear that this happened to you It is really sad to know that some people could be really unprofessional when they deal with their businesses.

    Is this SEO expect you hired doing full time work for you? To avoid this one, I would suggest you check Staff.com. It works like oDesk except I trust them more when they say their staff had a minimum of 2 years experience. Plus, you get to test them before hiring them. $4-5 per hour isn't that bad anyway.

    I got my SEO expert from there. I trust him and he's doing really great. Hope you find one that works well for you too.
