Hey guys!

So I'm putting on a local event and I've got a title for it but I'm not sure if I should put a HYPEN in between Sex-Life? Grammar is not my strong point.

The event is called ULTIMATE SEX-LIFE SUMMIT

Thanks for your help in advanced!

  • I think in this case you should disregard the "rules" and just go with what you think works best.

Grammar is used in marketing all the time to help sell. This is not achieved by sticking to the rules. Ad headlines are a case in point.

    • It could depend where you are. Here in the UK we don't use hyphens as much as the US for instance and sex life wouldn't normally have an hyphen

  • For general writing usage, I don't think sex life uses a hyphen... (unless you're kinky )
  • Another vote for no hyphen!
  • Make that another vote for no hyphen.

  • Another vote for no hyphen!
  • You definitely don't need the hyphen.

  • You don't need it man..
  • No hyphen! It just doesn't look right with a hyphen.
  • according to Oxford English dictionary - definitely no hyphen!
  • another no hyphen vote,
  • Must admit .. this is the best use of a post to frame a sig file I have seen in a while. I actually believe it is within the boundaries of the forum if all the one line replies do not get it nuked lol.

  • Every one saying no hyphen then my vote also goes to no hyphen

    • I'm in the US and I would not use a hyphen for Sex Life. At least that is my personal opinion. You may not need to take the rules so seriously for the title anyway.

  • I would take the hyphen out of sex life. Just roll with "sex life".
  • no hyphen..
  • Ditto that, no hyphen
  • Another no hyphen vote!

    • Sephora,

While you have gotten a number of opinions, I don't see that anyone has addressed the question of grammar.

The thing to ask is this: Is there a rule that determines whether these two words should be hyphenated? The answer is yes.

These two words are what is know as a compound adjective. Compound adjectives are formed when two or more adjectives modify the same noun. When this occurs the adjectives should usually be hyphenated.

The reason for the hyphen is to avoid ambiguity.

For example: man eating shark (a man eating a delicious shark dish) versus man-eating shark (a shark eating a delicious man dish.)

However, in your case the purpose of your headline may trump the grammatical rules, and Ultimate Sex Life Summit may be better.
  • I'm going to go against the grain a little bit here.

Okay, in most cases you would not use a hyphen for the term sex life, however, I don't know enough about this summit, so the hyphen could add a layer of meaning.

Whereas sex life would pretty much refer to having sex and all it entails, sex-life suggests that it's much more than that. It's almost as if the hyphen is saying that sex and life are intertwined.

So, if you are going to get into the philosophy of sex, or the deeper meaning of relationships, then sex-life could be an interesting take on a common phrase.

In normal English usage the phrase sex life is not hyphenated, but there could be legitmate reasons for adding a hyphen.

    All the best,
    Michael
