How do you find niches?

...I am new at the niche blogging area (although i have created several blogs-pages-eshops in the past!)...

I would like to know, where do you find ideas for your new niches?

Would you like to share?

My method for finding niches is pretty basic. All I did was create a word document when I first got started. Then anytime I saw a topic or product that I found interesting - I wrote it down. Once I started do more detailed research about a niche, I always found more sub-niches and wrote them down too.

    That's it.

(Obviously this is not how I research a niche and decide whether or not it could be profitable - but it is how I find them in the first place)

What ever niche you go for you MUST

    1. Make sure there are enough products for you to promote. At lease 3 good ones and some poor ones too.

    2. Does the niche have a 'for dummys' book. I have found this very useful in learning if it a 'super niche'

    3. Keyword research. Start with your keywords first. Get this part right, if not it may not matter what niche you go for, it could all be a waste of time.

If you want more help I have an excellent coaching video that would help you out.

Good advice, it is always valuable to find something that is trending or popular. Competition indicates that people are making money within that niche or they would not spend on advertising. But too much competition means you will barely get a look in.

Reverse Engineering the best and easy method. Go to flippa and check just sold sites. You also can find micro niche sites by using footprints of worpdress themes.

I would look at sites like amazon.com/gp/bestsellers, pulse.ebay.com to see what sort of products are selling. I would also take a look at trends.google.com to see if it's a quick buck niche or if there's something that's evergreen.

Another way I used to use was ezinearticles.com

Taking a look at the categories and see how many top authors are in the sub-categories.

Take the self-improvement as an example. Then the sub-category of "positive attitude", from there select the top author.

That shows that the person has been there since 2005 and has 212 articles in that category.

That can mean a couple of things and you find that out in the profile. As it turns out the guy has 1'062 articles published.

They'll be across different categories. All related. So that would tell me that self improvement could be made profitable, or people wouldn't spend years to publish over a thousand articles.

Then as someone mentioned above, confirm it by visiting the dummies store. They have a personal development book on the subject. Plus more on related topics.

So that sort of research would tell me that it's profitable. Then I would start the keyword research from there to find a way into the self improvement market.

That is, if I was interested and thought I could write tons of useful information on the topic.

If you're interested in something in particular. Ezinearticles can give you a fair idea of what people are doing. I see it as a directory that has a lot of authors using it for article marketing.

This is just for research though. It's not to take what someone is doing and reverse engineer their process and duplicate their writing.

I find the hardest part is niche selection, rather than all the other stuff. Running websites that don't turn a buck gets frustrating. That's why I would put the extra leg work in to start with, so I'd have a fair idea if it was profitable before putting the legwork into the project.

Digital products - I would look at the top gravity products on Clickbank.

The easiest method is to type a few keywords that you can think of into the Google Keyword Tool. You will need to register and log into the tool for best results.

Use advanced search to set the competition to low, number of searches to a minimum of 1000(could be less) and the CPC to be high. Amongst the search results look for keywords with rising or consistent trends and identify a niche from one of the results. Supplement your search with browsing various sites like Amazon and eBay Pulse(for physical products), Clickbank(for digital products), Yahoo and other news sites(for news trends), Google insights and also relevant forums in the niches that you shortlist.

Some years ago I wrote for eHow the "how to" site. I wrote all kinds of articles. Everything from how to look like Marcia Brady to how to polish a seashell.

I got to see which of those articles did really well with Adsense clicks and affiliate links. Certain topics did really well for me; health and beauty, how to save and make money, relationships etc. Other topics did not do so well for me; fighting crime, music related topics etc. Not saying they can't do well, they just didn't for me. I made websites based on my most popular topics.

There are certain evergreen topics that will always do well, you just have to drill down and find your focus within them.

To produce good quality unique content, I build sites about what I know about, things like fishing, golf, climbing or things I am interested in learning about. I once did a series of sites about swimming pools and accessories but it was soooo boring writing the content I ended up abandoning them!

Short answer...stick to what you know or would like to know about!

I'd probably do it the complete opposite.

Instead of trying to find a niche I'd learn about marketing/selling.

Once you learn about marketing/selling it's easy to pick a niche. In fact, the niche picks you.

You should ask non-other than you yourself!....What am you passionate about?

It is best if you target a niche market which you have interest in. Mainly because you know it better...and you are willing to learn more about it..without feeling stressful or boring etc.

Of course you can choose other niche market with good profit margins, but if you do not have the interest or passion. It will be tougher!

I started out picking niches I liked and had some knowledge so I could write the content. After spending close to a year now in IM, I now do extensive keyword research and find a keyword that meets my criteria.

I can write about anything. It doesn't matter if I'm passionate about it (although it makes it easier) because I can write about anything. The goal is to produce a site that makes money.

I too keep a list of niches. There are notepads all around the house. When I think about something - see it on tv, etc., I write it down and research it.

I wish you the best of luck and success.

You know, I actually did find some interesting subniches on Flippa - that is one way to research niches. But I also took the advice of many people who are doing affiliate marketing in subniches. If you go to Amazon and pick one broad topic, for example, fitness and see the hundreds of items on sale there, you can reverse engineer the idea.

For example, choose one type of fitness equipment and make that your focus, then build posts around that equipment. You can make your website very narrowly targeted or broad. Nowadays, Google likes "authority or curated" blogs that offer targeted and relevant, unique content. That type of website will never go away since there are no "shortcuts" and offer the reader exceptional value.

There are evergreen niches such as make money, weight loss and personal development. If you go look at PLR stores, you can find articles written for many niches that you might not think of. Then, take those articles and rewrite them a bit for unique content and with four of them, you have the start of a good website. Just schedule each post about a week apart to drip-feed content to the Google spiders...for starters.

Hope some of those tips help out!

I would say just make sure that you are knowledgeable in the niche. If you are trying to build content for a niche you don't know much about, it will be difficult to make really good reliable content.

This is where you will have to dig a little deeper to find a good niche and some keywords that will work for your mini sites.

This is what I love the most. Finding niches.

Some people shy away from this part of the process, but to me it's like a treasure hunt!!

Here are some ideas for coming up with niche ideas.

--> Look around your area, write down everything you see. EVERYTHING!

Now I add to it, put each of the basic words you find in the Google adwords keyword tool and see what you get.

--> Look around you everywhere you go. Take paper with you and write down everything you come across for a whole day.

Then put each main topic in the Google keyword tool and see what comes up.

--> Go to ebay pulse and look through categories there.

Put main categories in the Google keyword tool and see what comes up.

--> Go to website directories and look at the categories they have.

Put those categories in the Google keyword tool and see what comes up.

--> Go to Amazon, check out their categories, check out the topics of books.

The quest here is to find a topic that has four things: traffic, people who will buy stuff, not too much competition and is enjoyable to work in. This section will hopefully help you figure out exactly how to do that.

    1. Download Market Samurai to find the best niches

Market Samurai is the most important keyword research tool you will ever use. It allows you to look at all your competition and see what keywords and backlinks they are going after. This is extremely useful when deciding on a niche to blog about as well as being useful every time you write a post.

Let me give you an example. Let’s say you want to write a blog about dog collars and have the domain name cooldogcollars.com: The Leading Cool Dog Collar Site on the Net picked out. But after having a look on MS you might find that the phrase “cheap dog collars” gets way more searches and has less competition than “cool dog collars“. One quick search might have just saved you months and months of work.

Make a list of all the niches you are thinking about exploring and then use Market Samurai to see if there is any real juice in there.

    2. Consider your long tail and short tail keywords

A short tail keyword in this instance is “dog collars” whereas a long tail keyword would be “beautiful dog collars”. You will need to plan out your short tail keyword making sure it is a relatively popular one but you also need to make sure there is enough to write about for all those long tail keywords.

I’m not just talking about traffic here – I’m talking about your ability to write on a topic. If you run out of long tail topics in a year you are going to be in big trouble.

    3. Make sure you love it to death

It sounds corny but unless you absolutely love the topic to death you are going to fail and fail quickly. Writing posts gets boring, even on topics you really like. So imagine spending hours of each day working on and thinking about a topic you don’t care about? It would be dreadful.

I have literally dozens of sites that I don’t maintain because I just don’t care enough. All of my successes have been in niches that I love.

    4. Analyze the big boys

Once you have done a little bit of thinking and researching the next step is to take a look around at the big guys and gals in your niche. You want to look at their blogs and take notice of things like how many subscribers they have got, how many Twitter followers they have, how many comments they get, how they do on social media and bookmarking sites, etc.

The point here is to make sure that there is room to grow in your niche. If there aren’t any big guys it either means that you have found the best niche in the world (unlikely) or that there just isn’t much going on in that topic.

    5. Start with your product and work backwards – IMPORTANT

Here is the really important part. You want to make sure you know roughly what you are going to sell on your blog in order to make money before you begin. Many people start thinking that they should get as much traffic and subscribers first and then think about how to make cash.

    BAD MOVE.

Why? Because sometimes there just isn’t a really good way to make cash in certain niches. Before you start out you should have a think about how you are going to make money and then only select your niche if the competition is right and the product(s) fit well.

To get started, there are three places you can go:

    1) Magazines dot com - Find a topic that interest you - i.e. "Men's interest", "Home Improvement", "Healthy Living" etc. Then - use one of the subject titles on the cover and do a little keyword research.

You would basically do the same thing for the following places.

    2) Go to Dummies dot com

    3) Go to Amazon dot com and look in their Best Sellers list. They have a magazine section as well.
