Telemarketer on Odesk for $4.44 an hour?

I'm looking at hiring a telemarketer so I was checking out oDesk.com. Well I see that there are telemarketers who will work for $4.44 an hour.

What is the catch?

It's all about return on investment. Sure, it's $4.44 an hour... How much money would that investment make? Sometimes, it's better to spend more money to actually make money. I suggest you do a taste test and sample as many differing providers until you get the ROI you're looking for.

Also, differing telemarketers have different strengths. The $4.44 guys might be good at selling Product A to C but your product is X Y Z... Catch my drift?

Philippines worker isn't? Most of workers from there work very cheap.

    or

English is a second language and if they have no history at oDesk they will charge less and later more..

    Indian workers work cheap!

  • Well, if they're not based in an English-speaking country, the return on investment will be less than what it would be if you hired a U.S. worker for $20 an hour. You can't do sales effectively speaking in a thick foreign accent, obviously.

I think I'm going to test out a worker for $4.44 to see if they are any good. Though I honestly don't feel the best about paying someone only $4.44 an hour so I don't know how long I would keep it up for even if it did work out.

You tend to get what you pay for, so I wouldn't be overly excited at what you get for that price point. You mention they are from the Philippines though, so perhaps it is just a matter of different economies. I don't know what $4.44 per hour gets them over there. Test first before committing long term.

You can test them, but you can get better quality U.S. telemarketers that will produce much more profit for the investment.

I know some call centers in "unnamed" locations that can spend many hours trying to convert one sale. That's even for those that can "speak English."

If you can pick up the slightest dialect difference, so can your prospects. So if it takes them 2 to 4 hours, how much did you really save?

That's not always the case, but test, test, test.

Do you know where I can find good telemarketers in the US?

Post a proposal for appointment setters on elance.com and request hourly rate bids.

Ask for U.S. based and native English speakers.

I pay over $10/hour for a U.S. based telemarketer and it's worth every penny.

The saying is true, you get what you pay for. I've used India and Filipino telemarketers had some decent results but overall I'm getting a better ROI with my U.S. based team.

It's all about testing and tracking your marketing dollars spent/ROI.

    Best of luck,
    Ahmad

Some countries have a much lower cost of living than other countries, so workers can afford to work at that rate. Having said that, this might mean that English is not their first language, and so they might not be the best people to hire as telemarketers. This dose not mean that people offering these kinds of rates necessarily have poor English, but you should conduct a proper interview before hiring.

I guess there is no harm in trying someone out at that rate to see what the returns on investment will be. I know people who have had more success hiring people from developing countries than developed countries. You don't want to look back and think you missed out on a gem

There may not be any a catch.
    1. Some people live in palce where they pay rent of $250 a month; a dozen eggs costs 35 cents; internet is $10 a month. And you can live well with a family of 3 for $800 a month.
    2. Some people do not value their services.

So for $4.4 an hour you just require about 200 hours a month to live comfortably with your family. If one is single still living with parents the threshold is much lower.

That is a very good point.

Test them before you hire them. They are probably not English speaking (or not their first language) and in most cases paying someone more that will do a much better job will work out better for you.

The catch is that this guy isn't in the US, doesn't speak native English, and that the guy lives in a country where the minimum wage compared to US dollars is much lower than here. I have worked a lot with odesk people and the bottom line is that you get what you pay for.
