Writers: Here's how to guarantee you'll never get a decent client

If you are determined to remain a starving writer who can't seem to ever get a steady client, there are at least four things you simply must do:

1. Go to the help wanted section of the forum and apply for a job. However, when doing so, be sure to use the tortured English, bad spelling and horrendous grammar that so many people use there. This will tell everyone that you are not a real writer since you can't even be bothered to edit your pitch (never mind what a previous thread discussed about editing what you write in the general forum).

2. Always offer to go lower than anyone else. You'll eventually find that in order to go lower than someone else you need to start paying people to take your content from you, but hey, we're trying to make sure you remain a starving writer.

3. Always offer to write a free custom sample. Heck, offer to write a free batch of custom samples. There have after all been numerous scams where "clients" asked for free custom samples from a dozen writers and then simply used those custom samples rather than hiring a writer. So if you're determined to remain a starving writer, be sure to offer as many custom samples as you can. Hopefully you'll offer them to lots of people who will realize they don't need to pay for a writer at all and you can remain the poor, starving writer who whines that s/he can't find jobs.

4. Be sure to automatically spin articles you find in article directories. After all, you'll be sure to turn off every potential client you come across when they see the truly horrendous tortured English that comes from automatic spinners.

People, wake up! Writing is a profession and an art form just like any other. If you expect to make a living doing it, then you need to realize that you are always being scrutinized. Don't just throw junk out there (especially when applying for work) and think jobs will fall into your lap.

Eric

P.S. I know there was a thread recently which discussed writers posting tortured English elsewhere in the forum. This particular rant was inspired after seeing the tortured English of some "writers" in the classified section when they make their pitch for a job.

    5. Always deliver late. Promise fast delivery to make the sale, then dick around for an extra day or two, maybe even a week. And write the articles the same day you deliver, without proofreading or editing them at all, just to make sure they're the worst possible quality you could send.

Let them do their thing the way they are, it's only gonna help you if you're in the minority of people who do it right

Yes and no. Many clients get frustrated with trying to find anyone who can write well when they put an ad into the Warriors for Hire section and so they eventually give up and look elsewhere or decide to hire a big company instead of individual freelancers, which makes it harder for me to find additional jobs (though to be honest, I'm pretty closed to being fully booked right now anyway).

Plus, I remember what it was like when I started writing professionally nine years ago and even then, it was hard to get work. It's only gotten harder for the newbie to break in and it bothers me to see so many people trying desperately to look for work when they can't seem to figure out the basics of doing this job.

I forgot to mention the very best way to remain a starving writer (it's been a while so I forgot): 5. (or 7 if we include the two above): Be sure to accept every offer to write an article for a PR0 or PR N/A blog where they offer to pay you with "publicity" through a link at the bottom of your article and they demand exclusive worldwide rights to your content of course.

Just wait till you see the video I'm working on for my new business. If the tests of the script I wrote are any indication it should be incredibly funny and popular.

    7. Send links to some excellent examples, then when you get the order, outsource the whole thing to someone who speaks/writes in fluent Gibberish.

Something to add to number 1: Give the same generic pitch on every single thread asking for content. It's not like you need to show the client that you actually read what they need, and it's also unlikely that they will see you with the same pitch all over the section.

    8. Don't, under any circumstances, specialize. Specializing means you're able to go DEEP... have a broad and expansive knowledge of the subject you're writing about, and will be able to produce content that truly resonates with readers.

People who purchase content HATE that. The shallower and more "generic" the better.

    9. Post an ad in the Warriors For Hire sub-forum. Make sure to include samples after you copy/sales pitch. Samples which contain basic spelling/grammar errors (yes, I have found several samples in the WFH with those basic mistakes).

    12. You must further deceive potential clients by hiring someone to create a beautiful ad for you so that viewers are sold on the graphic design, so their eyes bypass the second f in proffessional and the rest of the error-ridden text...

It's scary how many people are fooled and flock like flies to some of the most horrific ads offering writing services, some of which are not cheap while they should be!

This thread is pretty funny, but it's also quite sad! You've covered most of my "favorite" ways of how to stay a starving writer...

One that I don't remember seeing is this:

Absolutely NEVER write stuff to use yourself, but only write for others.

Gosh, the audacity of actually writing your own ebooks and selling them, or even Kindle books, or setting up a PLR biz where you can sell your writing over and over!

Or even writing your own blog posts and articles to promote affiliate products or your own products!

Of course that would take real skill! Especially writing ebooks that actually sell. But a lot of the writers who feel (and are) underpaid do have skills, so they should consider writing for themselves in addition to writing for others...

Here's one with a huge potential to "go viral"...

Once you have a deposit for a job, and you're hours from your deadline, contact your client and try to jack up the fee by threatening to sell the articles to someone else.

If it's too late for that, you can get almost the same mileage by simply selling the articles to a PLR site so they can be spread far and wide.

While all the don't-do's you have posted seem obvious, it is rather unbelievable how many people actually do all those things if not some of them.

A lot of people complain that they can't get writing projects from good clients. I think more than anyone, they themselves deserve the blame for doing silly things like offering several samples on the topic of choice, and willing to work for ridiculously low prices.

Sometimes it is better to take the high road and end up landing more projects in the long run through quality work
