How can you tell if your writer wrote unique content?

I am considering hiring someone to write articles for me. However i am trying to figure out a way/tool that shows me that the article that the writer wrote is indeed unique and not a "copy-n-paste" job or a "spun article".

Any suggestions?

Copyscape is one tool that can help. Nothing is foolproof, but CS catches quite a bit. The best insurance is hiring someone with a good reputation and good references.

If you are just considering this idea, you probably want to get copyscape so you can do some checking on your own. Still not 100% though. Some of the better spinners in the right hands, right synonymns can be tough to spot as spun material. Good luck and BTW if you come up with one you can make a whole lot of money right here.

I often check article uniquness using copyscape
Copyscape Plagiarism Checker - Duplicate Content Detection Software
Although that does compare a published web page and not a text file.
But they do have a premium account service which if you are going to publish a lot of paid for content I guess would be worth it.

As everyone else has said, Copyscape is the best. For spun text, you can usually see that it was spun by reading it. Spun text tends to sound off, or just downright ridiculous.

I heard people use funny characters that look like normal ones, so it passes Copyscape.

You are absolutely correct, I stumbled over this a while back while researching something else. It absolutely gets the stamp of approval from CS.

I have seen a WSO that does exactly that.

It is very easy to detect this as well. Simply copy and paste the article into Microsite Word. If it has funny characters, Word will show every single one of those words as being mispelled.

And that "funny character" thing isn't going to fool Google either. They'll just see the article as a bunch of gibberish and discard it.

Tina gave you the best advice. Hire a writer with a trusted reputation and that other warriors are willing to recommend. Place a small order and see if their tone and writing style meets your requirements.

I grab 8 words from a sentence that looks like it would be unique and put them into quotes, then run them through Google.

It also helps to be well-read in the industry that you're working in. Everything that can be copied isn't always online.

The key to telling if the person used the character replacement is to not copy/paste into Copyscape or Google. Type it in yourself and that way you'll get an accurate reading.

Apart from Copyscape, Article Checker is also one of the most popular tools in the community of webmasters. Its also free and simple to use. Not in Google only, its results are profound in Yahoo also.

Yup...Copyscape premium is the way to go for the initial check when you're evaluating the integrity of a new writer.

Also just read what you've bought and you'll be able to tell if it's spun, doesn't make any sense, just a cheap smash and grab job etc...

Above and beyond that though, you should add your own special touch to the content that you're adding to your site.

BTW..Your site is very cool , I love the vegan touch...
