Organic Search and &GL=US tag

I noticed a while ago that when I type in the Google's "after search" URL the
&GL=US tag it gives me a totally different organic rankings!

Why's that? Ain't the organic search suppoused to be "international"??

p.s. for those who don't know: If you live out of the United States and wish
to see what search results the folks at the US see, you type &GL=US at the
end of the searches' URL and there you have it.

No, it's regionalized. Even in different states in the US, you'll get different results. Heck, I get different results even in the same state.

but how that has any practical use?? Adwords I understand why it needs a localization
    mechanism.. but organic search?! really??!

I mean.. what's the difference between a dude who searches for "Gingis Khan" in
LA from a dude who searches for the same keyword in NY?.. let alone zip.

Does Google really want that ALL the top Google's search results will be stores?!

..When I think about it.. this is useless too, cosidering that almost all online stores which
compete for the top organic spots actually ship worldwide and act as an international store!

It all seems really stupid to me..

Hanuka, listen dude...bumping threads multiple times in this forum is kinda BS.

    But here is your answer.
Google localizes search results so that local domains can also come up.
Google recognizes your IP address and delivers RELEVANT results, because Google is all about relevance.

There is very good reason that Adwords offer you geographical placement. That is a clear indication that they deliver localized results. This protects adwords advertisers from spending money in a market that they don't want to market to.

But for SEO it's a bit different....
For example, if a person from the UK visits the Google.com engine and types in "Web Design Service", Google will recognize that his/her IP is from the UK and give him local organic results (IF there are any) and THEN global results. With adwords it's all up to the advertiser where he wants to advertise.
