copyright on self made drawings/paintings?

Lately I'm into painting, I like to paint portraits of famous people. I wonder if I can get into trouble if I sell this paintings because of copyright issues?

I guess If my painting is somewhat original it isn't really a problem but I don't know for sure?

I also wonder, what if I paint someone just like they are on an existing picture. Does this fall under "making an copy". Or are paintings not really copy's?

As long as the portraits are your own and you aren't copying another paining line for line than I don't see the issue. You can't be sued for painting someone's likeness.

The only issue I could see would be you painting something like Warhol's Marilyn Monroe exactly the same and then trying to charge people for it.

If your making replica of famous painting and sell it as original. You might get into trouble because of fraud.

The legislations that fall under artwork versus digital copyright, are two different things.

But, Harvard Law School has discussed the issues therein on an actual page, citing various concerns or situations that have risen therein:

    The Artist's Rights

    Just to get an idea.

People do sue for a lot of reasons, but I don't see THAT often, someone suing an artist for painting their own image; especially someone who has publicly released said image to publishers for release and use in the general public.
