I'm beginning to think being called a loser is a good thing

I got into a verbal spat with someone who does not like what I do. They say it is not a real career and it has no future. Keep in mind I make more money than this person does and have more free time.

Anyway this person ended up calling me a loser, which I have been called before and have heard others called before. After hearing it used as an attack so many times I have come to realize the term loser has different meanings.

Meaning 1: You are a person of undesirability either in character, appearance, or accomplishment and have no value of any kind to others or society as a whole.

Meaning 2: You are not engaged in things that society has approved of and thus fore you will be looked down on. This is even if you are doing better than other people.

Meaning 3: You are a person who poses a social risk to others because they will not be able to properly sell you to others.

I figured when I was called a loser I fell into the second category. In this case I am happy to be a loser. And any time someone calls you the same refer to the above. I have finally seen that getting called a loser in some cases is a good thing. It means you are doing something right.

My whole life people and even my own family have told me I was a dreamer and loser for thinking that there is a better way to make a living other than working a regular 9-5 job.

I have never liked working for someone else and for the past 7 years I have I worked for myself and I'm not going to say it's been easy or very profitable some years, but over the past 2 years I have been running my pizza discount card business full-time and I'm now making more in 6 month time than I have ever made working full-time for someone else, so if I would have listened to what others had to say and not follow my heart and do what I wanted, I wouldn't be where I am today.

You have to find something that you enjoy doing and that you can profit from and just do and forget what others say as long as you are happy and can pay your bills, that's all that matters.

    To your success,

    Martin

this IM game is few and far between

you guys in the US are kinda lucky as you have a far great chance of meeting someone that knows about IM, SEO or online marketing in general

here in the uk its a complete shock when i tell people what i do for a living

i know you guys say that too but you have a far greater chance over there of meeting somone that knows something about IM, SEO or online marketing in general

the first thing people say is when i tell them i have my own internet business is

"oh so you sell porn and stuff"

ive been doing IM for 4 years now and i have NEVER spoke to one person in all of the places ive been in the uk in the last 4 years that knows anything about IM

just because not many people do it, it doesnt mean its not profitable ;-)

best thing to do is just knuckle down and forget about the people that put you down and let them carry on with working for a boss and building someone elses business

I think the best revenge to this kind of people who tend to look down on others and judge them according to their standard is to flaunt how financially able you are. Definitely, if this person is making a living doing a traditional work, he/she is sure to be struggling to both ends meet no matter what his position he has in his company. This is especially true if he does not know about making money through passive income. He is basically grinding all day long for a static paycheck.

I have the same issue from time to time... people say I'm a bum and too lazy to get a "real job." Other people just say I must be a scammer if I sell things online.

Honestly, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what they think of what you do as long as YOU are happy with what you do.

I had "real jobs" for over 14 years.

Working for yourself is much harder than just going into an office and having someone tell you what to do.

Whether or not you promote "scams" is an individual choice every internet marketer makes. When working in a "real job" you often have to do things that you believe are "scammy" and don't have the option of saying no unless you want to get fired.

Honestly, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what they think of what you do as long as YOU are happy with what you do.
      Absolutely!

Or when all else fails... just tell people you're an Undertaker or Sewage Worker. Stops any questions right there

I've always worked for myself, so I really don't know any other way of life.

People that work for themselves have to be creative in order to survive, and to live well. They are the creators of jobs, and the innovators.

As Jim Rohn said: "Walk away from the 97% crowd. Don't use their excuses. Take charge of your own life."

For me the experience has been different. I have offline and online business so my friends and relatives know I am doing something interesting which they are clueless even now. Most of the time they see me online sitting on a dining table and working on laptop. (though i have an office of my own). My mom doesn't understand what I am doing. My close relatives don't understand, except my wife and my children. Others are just clueless.

Yet they are seeing that I have a decent living as our house is big enough, we have a chauffeur driven big car, we travel by flight everywhere and we contribute well during social functions.

People to put you down for doing something different than they are doing are idiots. I work full time as a software engineer and I also put a lot of hours into my online business. I am working with the goal in mind of one day becoming independent on my own financially as my parents and all their friends did when I was growing up.

Having a 'good job' sounds great on paper. Consistency is great, it allows you to pay a mortgage and pay for a wife and kids. However, a consistent job, imo is not as good because overall you are spending a significant amount of time working for the benefit of someone else. If you could do it yourself, imagine being able to take months at a time off, and not listen to anyone else. Owning your own business, however, comes with its own set of headaches and issues. I guess in life people do what they can to get by.

I have always felt that as long as you stick with something that is leading you down the right path, over time you can achieve great things.

The question for me is why people feel they need to defend what they do or convince others of what they do.

If you are earning a living online - it's visible to others. People asking what you do are curious how you can stay home and make money. Have a one sentence explanation for them - and then change the subject.

If you are not earning a living online - it doesn't matter how you "defend" IM or explain your "passion". They won't believe you for good reason and there's no money to be made arguing about it.

Before criticizing friends and family for not believing you - look at what you are saying to them. It's boring to be around someone who talks only about "me, me, me" and natural to argue with someone who thinks what he does is better than the work others choose.

If you are earning enough online - there's no argument about it and no need to prove anything or convince anyone else.

I've been called a "loser" so many times that if I had a dime for each instance I'd have one of the most profitable businesses on this site! We're not alone, however, I'm sure people like Bill Gates were called a loser over and over again.

It's like my old (now broken) coffee mug said "Don't let the turkeys get you down."

I still have friends I've known for quite a while, when I tell them I was working since 6:30 this morning they say "Doing what?" The worst was my mother-in-law. The only thing she could comprehend was that I was home all day, I'm sure she imagined me watching talk shows and eating cookies.

Some people are just like that, it's best to simply ignore them. People have an inherent need to know that the way they live their lives is the right way, that their choices were the right ones. Sometimes this means they need to put down others who have been successful by following a different path.

Here's a fun game, tell these people you're thinking of hiring new people and see how quickly they change their tune. :p

It's predictable that one of the first questions asked of you in a new social encounter will be 'what is it that you do?'.

Clearly, we use that as a quick way to assess a persons social status and worth. If it's difficult to provide a quick, neat and comfortably fitting answer, the outcome is often that we are downgraded by the person asking the question.
The level of the downgrade is somehow proportional to how poorly you were able to answer the question and how ignorant the person is who is asking the question. Poor answer, ignorant person, and you become a loser

At one time I was following Mike Filsaime and reverse engineering whatever he does but on a smaller scale. He has a social platform like Facebook but only for Internet marketers and the sub-header says:

"Because nobody else will understand what you're saying" or something like that ...

Man he's so right. I wasn't called a loser but I had those looks back when I started and some comments like a sarcastic "good luck". A year ago the sracastic good-luck girl asked me to hire her boy friend and some of those who gave me the "look" asked if they can give my contact info to their relatives who didn't like their jobs and wanted to learn.

    Life is very sarcastic man.

I found this out a few years ago ...It's the pull
of the World and one of the obstacles of living
    outside of the box

    - - People want you to be just like them because
change and someone being successful doing life
a different way makes them uncomfortable.

I now look at it like I'm on the right track when
    people say things like that.

If you did what everyone else was doing - 9 to 5 job,
    50hr weeks, 2 week vacation, 401k - you are
going to get the results everyone else gets - feeling
overworked and undervalued, stressed, neglect wife
and kids, in debt and retiring when you are too old to enjoy it.

So when someone calls you a loser because you are
trying to be successful, be polite and know in your mind
    "I'm on the right track!"

Almost every dreamer is called a loser at one point or another.

The thing is- every real loser is also called a loser.

So which is better? To be successful and have people call you a loser because they're a lazy bum and are just jealous?

Or to actually be a lazy bum loser who doesn't contribute to society?

Couldn't agree more with this. I oftentimes tell others that being a loser has its benefits, some of which you have alluded to above.

About a year ago or so, I was driving on the freeway when I accidentally cut some guy off by switching lanes. I just didn't see him, I waved and tried to convey that I was sorry. I figured that was the end of it, but he sped up and cut back in front of me as we exited the freeway. When we came to the first stoplight, he actually got out of his car and walked back to my window, yelling at me and saying, "You can't afford to hit my car!"

I sat there looking at his car in front of me at the light. Since I have a suspended driver's license and no insurance, I realized that I could hit the gas and crash right into his car as hard as I wanted to without suffering any real consequences. In Oregon they don't arrest you for driving while suspended and all I would have needed to say was that I felt threatened by him and was scared for my safety.

I honestly pondered it as I sat there listening to this idiot. Little did he realize, I COULD afford to hit his car. He would be the only one who paid.

Still to this day, I wish I'd done it. I really do.

Being a loser has its perks.

It's also impossible to collect debts from me, since all of my income is under the table. I must be a major loser.

    LOOSER!!!!!!
But seriously Robin, it amuses (discourages) me how society assesses our worth by our occupations, almost like a caste system. Many people think janitors are loosers, but try to run a brick&mortar business without one. I think they're underpaid.

But saying you work in Internet Marketing is almost like me saying I work "in the computer business". That covers a multitude of possibilities! I really haven't told you much about my job.

There are so many different types of businesses involved in what we call IM, and most of the ones that your friends have heard of are probably scams.

But what you do isn't IM - not in the sense that you're doing ALL that is considered IM. You're only doing PART of what IM is:

    You're a Copywriter
    or you're a Blog Author
or you're an Author (eBook, whatever)
    or you're an Article Syndicator
    or...
You market products for companies online!

You get the drift? We're not Internet Marketers really, any more than an IT Manager is just a "computer guy". And calling ourselves IMers is putting us in the same category as a lot of unsavory characters - spammers, scammers, and MLM people! (Sorry MLMers! Just kidding! )

Point is, tell them what you DO, not what you ARE (IMer). Most of the time, one of the answers above (or something like that) will be all they want to hear. If you say you're an author, they may ask you what you write about, but when you say "How-To Books" or "Instructional Manuals", they'll get bored immediately and stop askin questions

Well I also think that being called a loser is a good thing...When people say negative stuff about you is mostly because they want to turn you down and make you feel unimportant...
Always ignore those people and never listen to them they are basically calling you names because they know how good you've become and are jealous of your success. When people say things like that be sad for them and tell them that you are a loser and there the ones that are successful. Never try to respond to those people, just move forward and pursue your dreams.

Honestly, I haven't had this problem yet. However, I am still studying and I'll have to think about getting a job in no less than 5 years. By then, however, I hope I will have started earning enough money to make a comfortable living.

Anyway, some of my colleagues at the University do have part-time jobs and they hardly get to earn as much as I do (and I earn really little). The only difference is I spend my free time reading tons of articles and comments here as well as doing some freelancing instead of spending it poking someone on Facebook. It's just a matter of valuing your time, I guess

One of the most difficult things about being in this field is the way society looks at these kind of jobs. Nobody really takes people who are 'internet marketers' seriously, but it is always nice to shut them up with paychecks once you make it big

The word loser means nothing to me anymore - you are right, it seems like a word adopted by people who want to bring down others who are brave enough to challenge social norms.

It sort of depends on how you're self employed but you can basically make your own rules and its easier to maintain pride since you don't have someone telling you what to do in undesirable ways.

Someone who calls names to begin with does have an ax to grind for whatever reason and calling names usually doesn't contribute well to their side of the argument...

People don't just not understand what we do, they actively think it entitles them to be dicks far over and above the bounds of reason. If you're too different from other people, you don't deserve basic human decency and kindness. You need to be punished until you conform.

Yeah. That works. I was into goth, punk, glam and hip-hop as a teen. All at once. If you think I ever got through a week without getting my arse beaten bloody, you've never been to high school. And if that didn't make me take off the makeup, WTF makes these people think they can make me close my business?

    You're a loser
That reminds me of those all days when a big bully will snatch my candy off my hand and as he disappears into the thin air i will shout You're a lose", meanwhile i will be nursing my pain, no candy, no energy to fight back.

Sometimes, its not all losers that are losers.

You might might be luck and run for a presidential election and win, yes you were fulfilled to have won that election but what if at the end of your tenure you have nothing to write home about.

    Thump up great loser! lol

I've been called a "Loser", and worse.

Some people don't understand the difference between the following simple "chores" in life.

"Having" to get out of bed in the morning to go to "work".

    And

"Wanting" to get out the bed in the morning to go to "work", but not not "having" too.

Most people "have" to go to work to get paid.
Sucessful internet marketers get paid, but don't "have" to go to work, most choose to do so because it doesn't seem like work.

I truly love the Internet, it allows me to be a lazy bas**** when "I" choose, i think that's what people don't like.

We are kind of like parasites though, suckling off the teat of <enter affiliate here> to sit as the middle man between consumer and supplier, well, affiliate marketing is, but most people just dont get the idea of how it works anyway.

I believe this is the case also. It seems like people figure if you are not working 12 a day and getting up at four in the morning you are not to be respected. In the end I feel people should do what is best for them, not what they believe others will find acceptable.

Such is the way of the world. If you do everything just like everyone else, say everything just like everyone else, and reap the same meager income as everyone else, hardly anyone will criticize you.

It's when you dare to venture outside of society's "box", and say or do (or earn) something that they are afraid to do themselves that they come out swinging.

It's like catching lobsters - people who catch lobsters usually have a large, high-sided pan that they put the lobsters in while they're catching more lobsters. Even though the lobsters can easily climb out of the pan while the "lobster catcher" is finding more lobsters (I know there's a term for "lobster catcher"...), as long as there are at least two lobsters in the pan, none of them will escape. That's because even though every lobster in the pan wants to escape, if they see another lobster trying to escape, the others will pull him back into the pan.

People want to escape the daily grind, but they don't want to see others escaping it - they're too lazy (or scared) to do what it takes, but they're too petty to tolerate others who succeed in it.

So true, and this carries over beyond what one does for a living, as well.

To me, this overt and seemingly intensifying preoccupation so many people have with being devoutly respected, admired and regarded as perfectly "normal" by others breeds contrivance, predictability, unwarranted nastiness and all the general crap that turns me off wanting to even give them the time of day.

It is repugnant, and more to the point, it highlights just how profoundly weak people can be emotionally, that they're essentially guided not by what they want to do, not by their own brains, but by everyone else around them.

They make few choices in their lives; most of the time it's just a case of bowing to societal pressures - the constant venomous nagging of peers and so-called friends.

They don't see it themselves, and perhaps neither do most people like them, but their behaviour smacks of their own dazzling insecurity, clearly sensed by those in the know.

It's especially humorous, if not a little disconcerting, to encounter this sort of behaviour in big and otherwise "tough" guys. Just laughable.

I'll admit that I used to get my back up quite badly about this sort of thing, but these days, if anything, I just laugh as pompously as possible in their faces for being the whiny, jittery, scared little pis*ants they are, and go about my business feeling all the better for it.

Here's a great quote from "Magic of thinking big" by
David J. Scwartz that perfectly corresponds to this situation:

"You win when you refuse to fight petty people.
Fighting little people reduces you to their size. Stay big.

Expect to be sniped at. It's proof you are growing.

Remind yourself that snipers are psychologically sick.
Be big. Feel sorry for them."

People tend to hate things or be afraid of things that they don't understand. Also, if you're significantly more successful than others, jealously will always be a factor. The best things to do is to just ignore them, let them keep hating, and live a Badass life doing something you genuinely enjoy doing.

I am not at the significantly more successful part yet, but I know what you mean. That is why I keep to myself. It can get lonely, but I manage.

hey I can tell you the members of my family that called me a loser and a no hoper when I had NO money, are suffering now. I cut them out. The family members who kepts saying go get em, and support me during the ups and downs, well I look after them now (as I make very good money online nowadays) and keep them close to me, and tell them how much they meant through all the Ups and downs.

Yes, I have lost family and members and friends over this, but I have a very good support network and wife who stood by no matter what. You need to keep these people close and throw the rest in the bin, I mean really they are a waste of your time and they do not deserve the time of day.

I've never been called a loser, in fact I get a lot of people really curious about what I do because I hardly work yet I'm never short of a coin or two!

The guy you're on about sounds to me that he's jealous. Bet he hates the fact he works his ass of 8 hours plus everyday while you generate money with ease.

Me personally - if I was your neighbor, I'd be thinking "I want what that guys having" and start digging deeper to find out more.

well... i think i have know more millionaires or multimillionaires after I started internet marketing compared to working in a multinational company. In the company, people talk about the dream of getting a 5-figure income monthly, but you have to climb up the ladder slowly after working at least 10 years otherwise you are the extreme smart fella. Here in internet marketing, you hear people make 5 to 6 figures every now and then.

Whether loser or not, everyone can decide. But I do enjoy internet marketing!

I say just do and not talk. Market effectively and you will only attract people interested in what you have. The best way of proving yourself to those people is by having massive success and still not saying a word. When they see you in a Ferrari they will know and they will beg you for help.

There's no need to argue with anyone if they call you a "loser" OK...as long as I get money from what I do which is Internet Marketing then life is fine. I know there's freedom of speech and anyone can say whatever but I just do my own thing even if many people don't understand it. That's fine. After all, I'm not bothering anyone.
