Big Fish In Small Pond: Theory or Fact?

I see more and more people trying to find the latest craze to join. The only problem is they make themselves a small fish in a big pond. That may have worked in the oldin' days but not anymore. Now the key is to be a big fish in a small pond (or niche).

The faster you can create, find or obtain your own pond and control it, the faster you'll succeed.

Agree or Disagree? Opinions, examples or experiences welcomed.

    Absolutely,

But once you have your Big Pond, you can sell time-shares to little fish so they can also dream of having such a vast watery space.

There is little hope of a good income by following the pack

I'd say you should be a big fish in many small ponds. That way all the small ponds add up to the equivalent of one big pond that you dominate.

My baker used to tell me, "It's easier to take a small piece of a big pie than it is to take a big piece of a small one."

I completely disagree with your theory. That's OK, it's what makes this place interesting.

Let's face it: small niches already have big, experienced players who have been around for years. Every niche will have one. Unless you ARE an expert, try positioning yourself to compete with them.

You'll be found out, so everyone can't do this. It's like trying to play ball with a professional when you are in the minor leagues.

I think it's best to find a unique angle. An angle which means you can enter into a big market and find a group of people who like your "angle."

You can build a hugely profitable business while slipping under the radar of big companies, having fun and counting your money, while your butler brings you fresh grapes.

    Hi,

    Let's treat things naturally.

Small fish needs to be in the pond where the big actions are taking place. There he needs to get used to the active environment and learn as much as possible.

Big fish tends to monopolize all the food. What the small fish gets are tiny. But once he is ready, he can test the waters elsewhere.

Fish or no fish, big or small, saturated or not, we ought to decide our direction. Once we have decided, we set our goals, select the best route and then take action.

Whoa! That's a good one. I've been working on a similar project for the last 3 months, I just never thought of it from that angle. You just helped me label it more specifically.

    i agree with OP

someone used a baseball metaphor and I think that is where his argument breaks down. Baseball is the big pond, everyone is trying to be a major player, it attracts the most talent and the most competition. A small pond would be under water ballroom dancing (yes this is a thing and its awesome) Now lets assume you know nothing about sports at all, i think it will be a lot easier to become the best underwater ballroom dancer in the world then it would to be just a minor league baseball player. Once you have dominated your small pond, rinse and repeat.

    Edit -
Also i think it is better to create a product you are passionate about and really adds value, so instead of making another guide about how to make money online why not make a really kick ass guide about something that will really add value.

The size of the pond doesn't matter. A good fisherman with the right bait can catch all the big fish.

        Funny you should mention that.

In fisheries biology, there is a concept called "carrying capacity." Carrying capacity is the amount of biomass that any body of water can support. It's a finite limit, but the distribution of that biomass isn't set.

In a healthy system, there's a diverse food chain, from microscopic plants and animals all the way up to the apex predators. Each level of the chain is big enough to support the next level of the chain and sustain their own numbers.

If something gets out of whack, like a population bulge among the apex predators, the whole system is endangered.

The bottom line is, become too big a fish in too small a pond, and you could find yourself starving.

I'd much rather find a niche in a bigger pond where I can thrive without becoming prey for those higher on the food chain.

Oh yea, I call that "Sweet Spot Niche Marketing". When you hit it, it's a beautiful thing to behold. But it's not always as easy to do as it looks, I don't hit it nearly enough but I'm getting better with time (and mistakes).

Actually neither, probably because I see it differently. It's extremely rare that any one person or organization owns all of the distribution channels, so it's no so much as people joining the "latest craze" it's just that they don't know:

    1. How to monetize that new craze.

    2. They don't know how to effectively reach their target audience (distribution channels).

Weight loss is considered one of the most "saturated" niches out there yet a new weight loss millionaire is created every single day. Something to think about.

Well said. The problem with small fish is that the "pond" (ie the internet) is getting bigger and bigger every day. Even the smaller niches themselves are getting more saturated.

Big ideas come from small ponds. There's small ponds everywhere, better known as new ideas, concepts, methods and markets.

I agree you are better off becoming a Giant fish in an enormous ocean. But unfortunately most people don't start out that way, they have to begin on the small fish or pond level.

You certainly have to find the sweet spot.

    1. Automatic or Manual Transmission Repairs for 1980 or older VW Beetles
    2. Automatic or Manual Transmission Repairs for all VW Beetles
    3. Manual Transmission Repair for 1980 or older VW Beetles
    4. Automatic Transmission Repair for 1980 or older VW Beetles
    5. Manual Transmission Repair for all VW Beetles
    6. Automatic Transmission Repair for all VW Beetles

The Parakeet Training School of Niche Examples would have you choose one of these as the most likely to be successful.

I think sometimes it's nice to get out of the online box and look at the big world. What kind of real world businesses are being started? What kind of franchises are available?

On a quick search there are NO franchises available for these niche markets. There is only one I could find for transmission repair only. Most are for general auto repair.

Likewise there aren't many (read any) stores in my area that sell paperclips OR notebooks OR shower curtain hooks OR hammers ONLY.

Now, I'm not saying one way is right or wrong. And I understand that when you start talking about franchises that leaves many of us out because we don't have big bucks to get started.

But that's the point. Franchises would not be successful if they weren't making money and if they weren't building businesses versus a quick buck writing 3 articles for $5 each (not that there's anything wrong with that).

If you want to build a real, big, stable business look at the real world along with doing your keyword research at Google.

Ask yourself what would someone do who wanted to start the next Amazon or Microsoft do? You can get the answers by looking at their stories.

I think it's rather humerous that the "parakeet training for single ladies who are Democrats" niche marketing classes are NEVER found. I've NEVER seen one. But I have seen TONS of people in the HUGE, OVER SATURATED, NO ONE BUT ME CAN SUCCEED IM arena saying that those markets/niches are the ones to tackle.

It's kind of like you go into a new town and ask the only repair shop in town if there's any business there because you are thinking of opening up a repair shop. Most of the time they aren't going to welcome you with open arms and talk about how there is so much money to be made and please come in and compete with them.

Think. Use common sense. But most importantly GO and DO whatever it is you decide on.

    Mark

I agree. Learned from offline direct marketing experts that it's all about the niche... and also that it's all about math. But that's another point. But big pond or small pond... it's totally useless if you aren't doing any backend marketing. Imagine being a big fish in a small pond that is filled with nothing but your own customers.

And this is a great point-

If you're in a small pond, there is going to be less backend marketing options available.

I mean- if you helped someone get rid of gout... now what?

On the other hand, if you are in the weight loss niche, you can promote fitness, weight loss, wellness, detox.... lots of stuff

The quotes above tell me that part of the issue is that people have wildly different definitions of the word "niche"...

I would never call "weight loss" a niche. I'd call it a large and varied market with dozens of niches within it (some of which Justin mentioned) and an almost limitless number of sub niches within those.

Those tiny sub niches are what Mark is referring to, I believe, in the snip I included here.

Those sub niches are great for picking a topic for a product, but the pond is likely too small to build a large business around. There are a couple of ways to attack this.

        > You could be the go to guy (or gal) for single lady Democrats, covering a variety of topics from their point of view. This one won't be easy.

        > You could broaden out to "pet training" for single lady Democrats, with a product on training parakeets, one on goldfish, and so on. Much easier to establish authority.
