    Hi, to be honest you can start off with a Kodak Zi8 HD Camera, which I believe is under $100. Its a good camera to start off with, and also it shoots in HD. It will be perfect for YouTube videos.

    Thanks

    For video of my computer screen, I use camtasia (PC). For video of non-computer related material I use a Kodak Playsport ZX5. It's small (kind of like a typical smartphone) and it does a good job for ~$100; just don't expect great quality when filming in dimly lit areas.

    Here's the camera: Amazon.com: Kodak PlaySport (Zx5) HD Waterproof...Amazon.com: Kodak PlaySport (Zx5) HD Waterproof...

    I'm using Flip Mino:

    * super simple
    * HD quality
    * you can upload directly to YouTube or import videos into Camtasia

    You can read a blog post I recently wrote about my YouTube studio set-up - you might find some of the tips useful: How to Set up a Video Studio in Your Bedroom and Make Professional YouTube Videos | Internet Digital Business

    Regards,

      This is the post I was looking for.

      "The Kodak Zi8 HD Camera, which I believe is under $100" -- cheapest I saw on Amazon is $198 just now. I think I'll check out the Cannon HD which isn't cheap at all or an Iphone.

      Thanks, I'm glad you found the tutorial useful!

      As for Cannon HD and Kodak - I remember looking at them at the time of choosing a camera for myself, but eventually I opted for Flip Mino because of its simplicity, I guess... I'm not a big techie so I like to keep things simple! ;-)

    I use a zi8 HD camera. I really like it.

    Great HD video and an external mic.

    I use Camtasia but in a pinch, I go with Windows Live Movie Maker...

    Use anything you can...to get it done... just get it done!

    I used sony's bloggie HD cam it pretty easy to use, very practical, its roughly the size of an iphone, great HD quality just plug and play also inexpensive, I purchased it for I think $150 and sold it to somebody that saw me using it on the street, I guess they really liked the quality of it.

    Then I did the logical thing and went on craigslist to try and find one and sure enough I bought one for $50 it was lightly scratched but thats ok because the picture quality was fine.

    It also has a feature to record more frames per second or less depending on your needs.

    I recommend this product 100%

    yeap Flip style HD pocket cams are the easiest IMO. This is the one I use, I think there are newer models out which are slimmer:

      Hi - I rarely if ever film myself on camera, except for closeups of my hands for nail art tutorials, showing my bookmarks samples and stuff I have on Yardsellr and Swap.com.

      As such, I needed something that would work well for closeups and have tripod capability. So I picked up the Logitech HD Portable 1080p Webcam C615 with Autofocus, which is on Amazon for just under $50.

      I was a brand new newbie at using any type of videocam or webcam and this is perfect. I love it. The software is easy to use and it has its own built-in mike. Depending on the video, sometimes I upload the video to YouTube right from the software. Most of the time I add it into Windows Live Movie Maker though so I can add my intro slides and such.

      For screencast recording, I use the online service at Screencast-O-Matic - Free online screen recorder for instant screen capture video sharing.. I don't know why, but every time I tried using Camstudio, it crashed. I got tired of uninstalling and installing it all the time, same with Jing, so I paid for the pro membership at screencast-o-matic and I absolutely love it too. The interface is super simple, even for non-techy "old" people like me.

        Kodak have gone bankrupt and are no longer in the digital camera business. I think Flip are out of it as well.
        You can use your Iphone/Ipad or any modern DSLR comes with HD video these days. Nikon, Canon, Sony take your pick.
        A Nikon D7000 will give you outstanding HD but maybe a little pricey for what you want it for.

    I've heard some really great things about the Kodak Zi8. Who would have thought a Kodak could outrun the big brands in that arena!

    santi:

    You are right on the money on this one! Kodak..out of business. And they came up with this great Zi8!

    My Kodak Zi8, is a great camera. It is very portable....it takes great video and has good sound. It even has an external mic.

    There is a drawback, however. I am not a techie...but I think it records on MOV file format. In order to use the video you may have to change the format.

    That's why I have been using Windows Live Movie Maker. It's automatically converts the video for you. It is kind of klunky to use, and is very basic, but it works fine for the type of videos I am making.

    What type of video editing software does everyone use to edit their video?

    I've heard Sony Vega is very good...

    Don't meant to hijack this topic, but I think what you edit your video with is as important as recording the video!
