Listing the essentials to internet marketing

Hello everybody.
With your permission I'll start with an introduction about myself. My name is Moses and I'm 21 years old. I'm somewhat new to Internet marketing. In fact, I haven't done anything about it until now, only researched about it for lots of time. I have interests in a lot of stuff however I am not an expert in any of those.
If I understood correctly, it shouldn't be a barrier since in the internet era anything is learn-able, but correct me if I'm wrong please.

I have decided to postpone my plans about the university (I will surely pick a B.A. in Economics and Management) and by the time I finish with my previous responsibilities (which should be around December to January) I plan on pushing hard on establishing a long-term business online.

My goal is a lot of people one's I believe, it is achieving Economic independence by passive income via an internet business. The real reason behind is not to save of my family anything, to be able to make the choices I want to, not to be forced to.

This brings me to the question of what business model should I pick?
Honestly speaking, The Blogging model is very appealing to me and seems really fun. I have no clue whether it is the easiest/fastest method to succeed online, nor the most profitable one, but if it comes from the inside it must come out better, right? Anyway, I'm open to hear from you what do you think is the better method for me.

I know for sure that whatever method I choose; there is an array of skills set I need to learn. And that is actually my main question: What are the essential skills I need to develop and practice?
*I want to mention that I am aware that these are lots of skills, but that's fine with me; I'm taking this very seriously, and willing to put much effort into it.
I have come with a list of my own, but I'm asking you to help me fill it with yours, and help me sort it out by several criteria (order doesn't matter):
1. Difficulty
2. Importance
3. Tendency to change (e.g. Social media vastly changes over time)

I know I don't need to be an expert at everything, and I do consider outsource, but I also believe that before I outsource anything I need to know the stuff to a certain level, and only then be able to somewhat supervise the quality of the work I'm getting.
Therefore I'll ask another question: What are the core skills/topics I need to get professional at?

Here is the list I came up with (again, order doesn't matter):
1. Internet Marketing
2. Video shooting and editing
3. Colors (their powers and impact on the clients, how to combine them)
4. Branding
5. Advertising
6. Traffic
7. Blogging
8. Copywriting
9. Analyzing and testing
10. SEO - on and off page
11. Link building (related to SEO if I'm not mistaken)
12. Graphics
13. Monetization
14. Tech stuff - Wordpress, CSS, HTML
15. Language - English is not my first language and I know no grammar/spelling rules actually)
16. Add skills of your own

What a list... I'm glad my family is willing to help me with it so we will try to share the burden between us

And my last question: What is advised to do with the non-expertise issue? How to attack it and pinpoint the topic to work around?

I really appreciate that you read all of my post and I would be very thankful if you could help me a little by answering my questions or at least some of them; all answers are welcomed

    Maybe I shouldn't have done that…
I have just read couple of threads and got the impression that succeeding with blogging is a really tough deal, and it's better to spend less time on more profitable method.

    Ruined my day.
Mainly because I have found lately some really awesome bloggers such as: Glen Allsopp, Corbett Bar and Pat Flynn; they are some honest and passionate about what they are doing that I got excited immediately!

If you could expand a bit about the recommended business model it would really come handy

Blogging is a great model for success in internet marketing. However, like every other method of IM, there is a lot that you have to consider and plan for when you set out with your online ventures.

When you get some time, check out the link in my signature. I have 6 free videos that I think you'll be interested in watching. They discuss this very subject.

Whatever you decide to do, you can definitely succeed if you just keep at it! And this forum is a great resource as well. Lots of smart people, here.

I hope you are correct about it, I am aware that anything I do need to be well planed but thats a very important thing so that I should be reminding it to myself every once a while

Don't go with the soleyl blogging. Come up with something fun and original and just go with it but also include a supplemental blog. Its amazing how much you will learn in even a year. There is a lot of advice out there both good and bad but the Warrior Forum is a great place to start looking.

Oh so what else can I do to support it by blogging?
you basically says that what I see from my favorite bloggers is just one aspect of their online business?
        {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[6090289].message }}
  • I will take my time and try to share a bit of experience because you seem to have a plan and that's a good solid start for what you want to do. Most of the people I see around forums just buy 5$ WSO every week and think the necessary steps are taken then.

So my first advice: Do not buy unnecessary products and eBooks. Save you money for more important things.

I think I know about 5 guides from over the last 4 years that I would consider as good information source to start IM and that are worth their money (most of them are over 200$). The most of the rest is all BS.

Almost every Information you need is freely available on the internet!

First of all it is very good that you understand that you have to get to know the methods and tools you will need before you can outsource them properly.

I worked for the first 1,5 years on my own on all of my websites. I built them, chose monetization, wrote the content and built the backlinks.

I read a lot about everything related to internet marketing and tested dozens of methods and techniques in various niches.

I see this as "Studying". I didn´t put a lot of pressure on myself when it comes to the fact of earning money. I just wanted to learn and understand and develop methods that work for me, and I would recommend everyone starting internet marketing doing the same.

If you are young and have the freedom to invest your free time in studying this subject, there is basically no way you can fail.

The most important thing, that most of the "Newbie IM" has, is a lack of dedication and ambition. You need to work hard. You need to work hard and you need to learn and develop your skills constantly.
98% of successful internet marketers had to work hard and long to get where they are. There may be a few exceptions but most of the people earning serious money online have worked hard for it or still do.

    Now to your list.
You should learn about coding (php, html and so on) You don´t need to be professional but you should know the basics and be able to do whatever you even you would have to read about or search for help to implement it.

I can basically change or implement everything into a website or a word press blog but things that would take a professional coder 10 minutes may take me 2 hours because I have to look everything related up again.

But that is enough to know what is possible, how much work is needed and the most important thing, you can give proper project descriptions when you start outsourcing.
The same counts for content. First you learn about proper SEO optimization of content, Keyword research and how to create content that the search engines like.

Later, when you outsource, you have your own idea and method that works for you and can share this knowledge with your writers when you contract them.

When it comes to graphic, it would be good if you dig in to the very essentials of a graphic program like Photoshop. So at the beginning you can create your own graphics, header, banners and so on. But graphic stuff is also easily outsourced right from the beginning for low cost.

And last but not least SEO or Marketing.

This topic is huge but the basics are easy to understand and to implement. However you will find dozens of methods during your "studies" and you will have to test them out, combine them and see what finally works for you. This method of your very own will then have to be scaled up and later it can also be fully outsourced.
The Topic marketing and SEO never has an end. You will always have to learn and try out and improve your skills.

All the other things you mentioned are basically covered in these for "essentials"

You do not have to go into video creation or filming as long as this will be not a core feature of your niche or business model. Still Programs like camtasia are not that hard to learn so by time you can go into these things as well but you do not have to learn those from the beginning because it would just be too much.

Also keep in mind to do everything as good as possible, you need a lot of dedication and willpower to succeed in this business.

Always keep in mind that every business you build (properly) can be a lifetime income stream (even if it's just a few hundred a month) .Like in this one song I would say:

To be successful in internet marketing you need: 10% luck, 30% skill and 60% concentrated power of will.

First of all, thank you! I really appreciate that you have spent some of your time to share about your experience with me.

Initially I planned to include another paragraph designated to ask for your own advices, but then I decided that it is a lot already and omitted that. And yet, that's what you just did so... Thanks again.

I am really aware of that, as I was saying; I have been looking into IM for quite some time, saved a lot of useful sites, accumulated tons of information products (freebies), and the most important - I came to learn about some of the people behind the names, who's bringing real value and who's just selling. So that will surely cut some time of searching.

I actually agree with you, I know there is this Studying step (which I believe never ends, but is very dominant at first), you can't just jump over it, and frankly I don't want to. No matter how many times somebody will teach me something, heck even doing it for me for no costs; it would never get equal to the benefits of learning and experiencing it on my own.

I am young that I can say (21, but starting to feel the muscles already lol), about the freedom... I make sacrifices for that. Here in Israel it's almost guaranteed that by the time you turn 21 and leave the army, you are going to the university. The society is looking at those who don't do that in arrogance, and presume that they did so because they just can't work it out; they are the weaker part of the society. But I don't care much about it, I have a Plan and I'm sticking to it.

About the Dedication, I recognize that. I am usually working myself on the mental part; keep on saying that these are just the start. All the starts are difficult, this I just another step. Yesterday I have watched a nice interview with Josh Kaufman from The Personal MBA, and he was pointing that most of the people are already scared before they start to learn something - therefore they simply don't. But by deconstructing the whole subject into several smaller ones, it's becoming way easier to deal with each one - and finally the topic as a whole.

About the list, I must say I didn't quite get the importance order you delivered, so I'll try to summarize that and please, correct me if I'm wrong.

You basically say that I should get over the tech-ie stuff first. This is good; I can pass the most of this to my brother as he really likes that kind of stuff; he can learn it much faster than I am, and he will teach me most of it (probably all of it later on) much more simply. But is PHP really necessary?

Now I can set myself to study Proper SEO of content and keyword research, which is by the way very bugging me (the keywords part) ... I can't seem to grasp (yet) the philosophy of that; What does it actually mean?

About the graphics I don't really worry that much. You see, by the time I was younger I used to work on Photoshop for fun, making forum signatures, avatars, banners and such... I am aware that in this case it will have to be quite different, much more professional and clean. But that's being said, I already know the basic features of the program so it wouldn't be a total shock working with it again.

What about stuff such as Colors? And Branding? Can I just associate them to be part of Graphics?

And Traffic, Link building, Analyzing, Advertising, can all of those be associate together? If so when should I start digging into it?

Same goes for Copywriting, I've heard a lot that this is a core skill to have, assuming for now that I'm not outsourcing it, the success or failure will simply fall on that. Oh, and that this is one HARD skill to learn. Is that all correct? What is your advice in regard with that?

      About the Marketing part,
Is this basically the leverage of my business? "The way my business works". The one thing other marketers are basing their high tier products on, and a lot of the times even take you by the hand.
Am I right? This is kind of scary to be honest...
*forcing myself back to Josh Kaufman method... much better*
I guess I'm scared about that because I just don't know enough. I hope it will get simpler by the time.

Thanks again! That post of yours was very helpful and inspiring, be sure I'll make good use to it.

Good thing you brought that up.

I haven't forgotten it that's for sure, however I have a question in regard to that; Well, I'm starting out as I already said, and I know that an Autoresponder is a crucial part of my success. However, I don't want to be to be perceived as a newbie to my customers, but if I won't hesitate and start using it right from the start - I will surely be perceived that way.

So what is the time point when I should start implementing the Autoresponder in my business?

For example, lots of people say to start building a list. But there is no point doing that unless you have a niche that works for you. All you will end up doing is building different lists with a few people on each one.

To begin with I learnt the technical stuff (how to build a website, load to my server, etc), then keyword research, then link building and other traffic techniques. That is all I learn to begin with and I've built and sold about $40K worth of website in the last couple of years. I've picked up some other things along the way, but I have stuck to these basics so that I can learn them well. I only work 2-3 hours a day max, so I could have fitted more in, but I'm more interested in enjoying my life.

So don't try to learn everything at once. Learn the basics and see where that gets you before moving onto other things. And remember that it all takes time.
I do not intend to learn all at once, That's why I wanted you to help me sort out the list, so I'll know with that so start and what to leave for later.

What skills on the list are not necssary? all the time I'm trying to eliminate some of them I cant seem to find any, maybe the Video proficiency one, but still I ment only to simple video shooting and basic editing so again I won't be in total agreement with eliminating it

      4. Linking

You don't need a list of things you may do in the future, as you can learn them when/if you need them.

But the above also depends on how you plan to make your money. If you want to build your own products then you need more than the above. But to me the above are the basics and where to start. If you can't do the above, or have someone to do them for you, then there is no point learning the other stuff. the above is the foundation. build that and then build the rest as you go along. You don't want to end up a jack of all trades but master of none. It's better to be an expert in one or two areas and get other people involved when you don't have the skills. Some things can be done so cheaply and to such a good quality that there's no point learning them and doing them yourself, unless they are your strong point and you enjoy doing them.
You truly are making a point, I'll set myself the minimum needed, and sit my butt till I get hang of it, then I can start to try and implement what I have just learnt.
Thank you very much for your time and help.

This is really one topic that is bugging me a lot lately. I used to search for some "freemium" theme, I mean: Free themes with rich features as if they were paid ones.

So if I'm understanding correctly the potential risk in choosing a theme is huge, so I better be going for some well known free themes (ARAS comes to my mind right away), or to do that extra step, and buy a paid one; Since I can't really know what make one theme better than the other one, and digging deep into it is another time waster which I shouldn't think about (Or should I?)

BTW, I know it's already a little off-topic but what does the price of a theme include regularly? I see that most paid themes (from well known websites) are being sold for around 35$ and some for 80$-130$~, the difference is probably the license? Yearly versus lifetime?

And another little thing, a framework (I really don't know what that means at all) might work it out? A tad more pricy but allows me lifetime usage, and to my understanding, endless design options (so that my site can still easily be made, but also stand out)

**I know that those are quite pricy options, while I'm not having any profits, or revenue or business at all ATM, but if it is that crucial part then I'm willing to pay for instead of crying later on.

Also I really appreciate your help Londonwarrior! I get the strong feeling that you honestly care and trying to prevent me from making any vital mistakes.

Yeah I read a little bit and quite got the idea of what it is. Seems to me that the Thesis one is the best out there in terms of efficient coding, SEO and such...

Not cheap, multi-site enabling framework is about 200$ without the child themes, but maybe it is so efficient and time saving that it justifies the price tag.

Would be fantastic if you would start such thread! I'd be glad if you could link me to it when it's up, so I won't miss it!

    Dear Fellow Warrior,

Being an Internet Marketer for the past few years, I'm sure the following will help you to move ahead.

    1. Think Why Should I Start?
The first thing you should ask yourself , why should I start this business and what are the reasons behind my decision to start a business. May be it’s because you don’t like your current job or may be you simply don’t want to bow down your head in front of your boss, or you want to spend more time with your kids, whatever it is, write it down.

    2. Write Your Goals ( I said WRITE)
We all have dreams but goals are not dreams. Actually we would like to have something (if not everything without doing any works, that’s called dreams. But goals are not dreams. One should have written goals and should not put the goals in mind only. Studies have proven that written goals have 80% success rate than people who didn’t write down their goals. So write down each of your goals from now onwards.

“We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.”
    Jesse Owens
    1913-1980, Olympic Gold Medalist

    3. Write Down Your Obstacles.
As soon as you finish writing your goals, now it’s time to write down your obstacles that you may face on the road, towards your journey to the acccomplishment of your Goals. Obstacles are inevitable part of life especially when you try to achieve your goals, when it comes hold your head high and say ” I will be bigger than you, so I must defeat you this time.

    4. Write Down How Can I Overide The Above Obstacles.
O.K now you have already know what are your obstacles you want to conquer to achieve your goals. Be realistic and write down each and every obstacles that may hinder your goal achievement journey.
“If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.”
    – Frank A. Clark

    5. Come Out From Your Comfort Zone
I know it’s really hard to leave our comfort zone and do something coming out from it. Who likes to do excercise at 5am, in a winter season, actually nobody, but those who are doing it know, that’s the commitment make them healthy and energetic. So do you a favour to yourself and come out from your comfort zone and do whatever it may take to achieve your goals. You may surprise to see the unexpected doors open in front of you when you do this. Don’t believe? try it for 6 months and write to me.

    6. Believe You’re Born To Win
We all’ve one life on earth and every body has only 24 hrs to work, then how come that some people are successfull and some are not. Because successful people make things happen while unsuccessful people just dreaming about success and live in the past. Remember you are a unique creature of God and your life has a purpose. You are so talented and let your inner mind talks to you and listen to it. Don’t let anybody to rule you, you only you’re the master of your destiny.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
    – Steve Jobs

    7. Avoid Negative Talk And Negative People
Remember this is your life and you’re not a slave. You can control your mind with positve thoughts and thinkings and never gather with negative people. Negative people are highly poisionous and get rid of them at any cost and take control of your life from today onwards. Whenever negative thinkings come to your mind or you feel very disappointed think this, if anybody even a single person you know or you heard someone achieved the goal that you are going to achieve, then you can do it too. Think now..What can you do, starting today, that will make a difference?

    8. Fine Tune Your Mindset
Actually this is everything, if you have a wrong mindset, you can’t reach anywhere. Make sure the outside of you is a good reflection of the inside of you. The mind and body work together. If you take care of your mind and spirit your body will take you anywhere you want. O.K let’s say together the following
“Today I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can’t.”
    Jerry Rice
    Football Player

Wish you all the very best

Believe! Having that believe that you can achieve the success and work hard for it. IM business is similar to any offline business, most people fail, but those that success have one thing in common, they have strong will power to be successful. This will power comes from you, you are the one control it. Of course, just think about it will do nothing, you will have to work hard for it!

To be able to find a Hungry niche that need a solution, communicate a solution to them using a webpage and finding out where these people are to show them your page.

You can use free sites as a start if you are not sure about web design etc...

You don't need to be a master copywriter when starting out but you need to be able to find out what people want and give it to them.

Also traffic generation is a must.

as chris says above its really not that difficult

you need a market/niche with plenty of buyers

    a quality product

drive targeted traffic to the offer

    make money

as long as you have a good sales funnel in place then you can drive targeted traffic to your squeeze page all day long, its a no brainer this is what i do to build my list super fast and it works like gangbusters :-)

The skill you need, take action

      Creating product:
      - creating a product out of your hobby
      - otherwise, find out what is your problem and how do you solve that problem, write a book about it!
      - Then you will need a good salesletter.
Resource: if you are not good in writing, hire someone!

If you are not interested in creating product, find affiliate products.

Then promote the product. Again, you can find JV partner if you have a product. To find one, check in the forum or google search for those related to your niche. If you are only doing affiliate, then you should focus on building your list.

For me, the whole process is about giving value to the prospects. When I think about products or searching for one, I am always looking into how the product will help me and others. Only iif I think this product can help me, and help others solve their problem, then only I will do it.

Thanks you all, you have been very informative.
I do understand that relationships is the most important thing, as this would be the thing that seperates me from the oters - If my audience will get attached to me.
