Google News Press Release

Recently I discovered the world of press releases and their various benefits for organic traffic and SEO. I want to begin implementing them for my various projects.

My question is simple: If my press release is on Google news, does that 'guarantee' that other sites will pick it up and my content gets syndicated?

I've heard marketers discuss the power of receiving authority links from press releases on google news, but have yet to find a concrete answer to my questions.

One trick I used when doing press releases was to set up Alerts from Google based on the title of my news release...so everytime a new site published my released and it was indexed...I would be notified.

As part of WebFire.com, we actually offer a Google Press Release service, and from experience both using it myself and seeing our clients use it, I can let you know the following:

    - You have a very, very good chance of ranking well in Google news (especially at the start), and even more so if you target your keyword(s) well.

    - In some markets, other sites will automatically syndicate your content and you'll get a lot of free exposure, while in other markets, it doesn't happen as fast. This is due to some markets have sites that syndicate content on certain subject matters / keywords so they might be more likely to pick you up automatically in one market than another.

    - Nothing is guaranteed, of course, but they've been a proven way to get free exposure, traffic, backlinks, etc. with minimal effort.

    - In our case, we manually review the press releases before submitting to make sure no junk goes through (and to help others who have good info but not in the proper format), so if you do end up doing press releases, make sure that you take the time to make a good one that follows the proper format of a press release and not just one giant promo about your offer.

Expect very little syndication of an average press release. Keep in mind tons of these are released every day. Unless yours stand out, it will quickly be forgotten.

Thanks for the information guys. I really enjoy writing and have realized that Press Release writing can be really fun.

I joined a site where I can release a few press releases everyday, and have confirmed that they do indeed appear on Google News. I think my focus will shift to writing proper and catchy press releases to grab the attention of other news sites and people.

    Thanks again guys.

A press release that appears in Google News is not guaranteed to get republished (unless that is a part of the service of the particular distribution company) but they will usually get automatically re-published by websites and blogs who subscribe to news feeds/Google Alerts.

In most cases this is not the full content, but the title and the first paragraph that has been scraped from the News feed.

It seems that websites and blogs will subscribe to Google Alerts for keywords relating to their niche and automatically publish releases containing those keywords.

As a result I think it helps to put very generic phrases into a press release heading. Not keywords you might rank for by themselves, but to increase chances of popping up on people's Googles Alerts. Phrases like "business" or "fitness" or "cars" etc. that describe the niche as a whole.

And whilst some of these automatic publications may not include links to your site, they will link back to the original version of the press release to add value to that.

I have also noticed that press releases appearing in Google News often get tweeted quite a lot.

But if you have some genuinely interesting news to report that ties in with current trends etc. then there would be a better chance of higher quality sites manually publishing them in full with your backlinks in tact.

    Hey Adam,

Its funny that you mention that, I just finished writing a press release and decided to do a little keyword research for the title. I checked out Google news and found the broad keywords for my niche.

I think my first few releases were too specific and that a more broad approach would yield better results....so I'm testing that approach as we speak and will hopefully report back with some positive results.

      Sounds cool!

Yes, I think using a very generic keyword and then combining that to be part of a long tail phrase is a good plan to both increase chances of triggering flags in Google Alerts and for helping the press release itself get traffic from the search engines.

I have also found that adding on additional words like "2012" or any local phrases such as "UK" etc. also helps create some nice long tail keywords for press releases.

Will be interesting to hear how you get on.

PRs work well, but they aren't the miracle method to get free traffic.

If you target keywords well- they may rank well- but as someone else mentioned, they usually won't get syndicated unless they're really good.

No. There is no such guarantee, just from appearing in Google News.

You didn't say which press release distribution service you are using. Some of them have partners that automatically display press releases related to their geographical or topical focus. This can be quite beneficial, since editors/blogs/sites often monitor specialized press release feeds, and not so much the general ones.

A lot of websites syndicate content from press release distribution services so your release will get a lot of exposure.

Make sure to include a hyper-text link in the first paragraph because syndication sometimes only includes the first few sentences of a press release. I usually try to put a link right after the date, or on the first sentence.
