How to add a new domain to my Hostgator account

Hi everyone,

I have a Hostgator account with the Baby plan (unlimited domains). I also just purchased another domain (my second website) and I would like to add it to my Hostgator account. When purchasing the domain name through Namecheap, I went to my Hostgator cPanel and copied over the DNS servers to Namecheap.

Now what do I do to add the domain to Hostgator? I tried to use the addon domains feature, but that adds a subdomain to my original domain (newdomain.olddomain.com). How do I simply add another website/domain name to my hosting account without adding a subdomain to my original website/domain?

Never mind, I did some reading and realized that is the way cPanel works.

    Hey Brendan

I have the same plan but I've noticed that when I add a new domain, it adds two - one as a subdomain and one without.

    So I'll get NewDomain.OldDomain.com and NewDomain.com

So chances are your new domain is there but you just haven't found it.

Try going back to the cPanel Home and clicking on "Redirects" instead of "Addon Domains" and click on the drop down menu that says "All Public Domains" and see if you don't find your new domain in there. If you do then you should be fine.

If not go back to the home page of cPanel and click on Live Chat Support. Those guys are really helpful.

    Hope that helps

It worked fine that way I did it. I just did not know that it added a subdomain to my main domain by default. I thought I did something wrong lol. Anyways, thanks for the reply!

Hi Brendan, here's the thing.... you did it the right way. Your not adding a sub domain, on the back end of host gator it shows up to you as if it is a sub domain. It appears to you as if it is a subdomain but in fact you are not adding a sub domain to your account. This is how it looks on hostgator, you've done it the right way. Now if you want install word press on this domain it will show up as the actual domain (www.yournewdomain.com) Adding an add on domain is virtually unnoticeable to the people who visit your site. for example on host gator my primary domain as http://leadatractioncentral.com but if i decided to add a new domain like weathgoon.com I would just go and click add on domain on my host gator c Panel and it will automatically add it to my host gator account. Therefore, whatever i upload to wealth goon will automatically show up on wealth-goon.com. Alternatively, people who visit wealthgoon.leadattractioncentral.com and they will still be able to see my site, because leadattractioncentral.com is my primary domain. So essentially, it is a sub domain but it is invisible to the people who visit your site
