I'm thinking of starting a business directory for local businesses but I'm unsure which script is the best one to use.

I would like your opinions and recommendations on the various scripts available.

    When you are comparing all sorts of features I want you to remember one very important thing:

    DATA IMPORT

    This can make it a breeze to set up something pre-populated or it can break your back. You need to know either where to buy the data or how to scrape it yourself. Unless you're interested in creating thousands of postings by hand or paying someone to do it for you. Just got finished building a website for Mt Baldy and let me tell ya even knowing all that in advance it was a biaaatch!

    I wouldn't use any script for this style of website unless users can create their own postings pending approval.

    Directory Press has been one given lots of thought and while I love Wordpress I was keen to hear about other scripts before making a final decision.

    Have you looked at phpLD? It is the leader in the industry by far with an Alexa rank around 10,000, and 100s of thousands of downloads. We just released a new version a couple of weeks ago. And yes, users can submit their own postings, and they go live when the admin or an editor approves them.

    So many things people have done in phpLD, but here is one example:
    Listing details for London Zoo at awayaway.com
    Notice the description, large screenshot (via the screenshot processor), map, video and RSS feed.
