One thing to note (which I didn't realize when I first started), is that having an ecover creator is different than creating a good photo to go on the ecover.

Maybe you already knew this, but first design a good image in photoshop or gimp, then slap it on an ecover

If you happen to have an Adobe Photoshop installed on your computer, you can search on google and download ebook cover photoshop actions and you are good to go.

  Gimp is free, I don't find it as good as Photoshop, but then again I'm used to Photoshop. There is photoshop elements which is a MUCH cheaper version of photoshop, which does more than most people would ever use.

I do not see a flat 2D option such as required by Kindle on any of these free sites. I personally use a quick and easy software but it is not free.

I used this gig on fiverr: ebookgenst

I didn't have any image that I could give him, only a description of what sort of thing I was looking for. He came up trumps! It was perfect.

He does get very busy tho' so I would suggest placing your order at least a week or so before you actually need it.

I dont think any decent ebook creator is free. You should find some templates for word or PDF if you have Adobe Acrobat.
They will help you get started. If not then try some free templates and buy a good software when you can.

I think it's worth learning Adobe Photoshop and GIMP, you don't need to think about all this hassle. You can buy some tutorials on eBay in DVD format or just learn from Youtube so that you can design a lot of things.

Ebook cover is not a hard work in design. The problem only with the graphics . if you have the good graphics and you have got Photoshop then you need just to search Google for "eBook cover psd" or "ebook cover actions for Photoshop" and that's all.

The best and easiest way I find to create your own eCover is to first create it in word. Then save it as a web file, open it and shoot the page. No need to use Photoshop or Gimp. Then once you finish that (takes about 2 minutes) plug it in to a software program like eCover Maker Pro (under $10 on eBay) and you're done! Takes maybe 5 minutes and looks great!

A great alternative to Photoshop is Photo editor online - Pixlr.com edit image it's free, it's online and it's awesome. Unless you want to send PSD files to a web designer and print shop, Pixlr is all you'll ever need. Start in the advanced mode for maximum flexibility.
