Pinterest usage down from 12 to 8 Million users

Business insider reports that the Pinterest hype was short-lived.

I don't know how accurate their numbers are. Referring to users signing in through Facebook within 1 month, usage went from 12 Million to 8 Million.

    OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

That was crazy short lived, if it's accurate.

So how long will the next social media trend hot site last? 3 weeks?

I had a good feeling that would happen. It went viral through Facebook, just like so many other things (think Kony 2012) but everyone on social media has extremely short attention spans. We get worked up and excited about something and forget about it a week later.

I never signed up for Pinterest, and I'm sure I don't really understand what they have to offer, but from my viewpoint it doesn't seem like they offer that much. Not enough to hold on to that excitement and surge of users. But I'm sure they made a lot of money so hopefully (for them) they can come up with a solution and retain their current users.

Good. Hopefully the 4M "users" it lost were spammers leaving due to their spam prevention efforts. I doubt that the article has accurate info if it is only counting those who sign in through Facebook. I've never used Pinterest in conjunction with Facebook.

I've never used Pinterest, but this post prompted me to look up the story of Pinterest's founding, and it is pretty cool actually. The guy had a dream and stuck to, even when it did not take off in the early days.

If you read more than just the headline, you see at the end that this drop is an expected adjustment of the "hype" joiners leaving, while the people who really are interested in the project stick around.

I wouldn't totally write off Pinterest just yet.

Yes, the dream of raping my website content in its entirety and making money off it while I'm stuck filing DCMA notices.

He had a dream to use a vanity-powered army of women to manually scrape third-party content and profit from it.

I have to agree on this one. A website model that relies on people submitting photos by the millions and millions which are mostly not theirs to use isn't going to be around for the long haul. After creating a site like this and knowing full well that copyrighted photos are used for the content, they then state in their TOS that users are fully responsible for the photos they submit and Pinterest has no responsibility.

In the beginning they even had a clause in their TOS that you give Pinterest the rights to the photos you submit including right to sell and use as they see fit. The people submitting those photos don't have the rights to give Pinterest those rights. They've taken that out of the TOS now.

I'll second this. I'd bet a large portion of those lost were people trying to game the system that were quickly shut out. Good riddance.

I'm not sure Pinterest is just a fad though, I'd give it more time (and wait for more accurate numbers) before making a call one way or the other.

Automated bots, repins and spammers might have killed it.

Twitter isn't based on criminal activity.

Pinterest, in contrast, is an outlaw that needs an old-fashioned public hanging.

I always felt like pinterest would start to fade...

Compared to Twitter, the simplicity of twitter is what keeps it alive. Not exactly saying twitter is better, but just look at a handful of posts on twitter once in a while. It's mostly just simple nonsense, but that's what people want...

Hmm.. Either way.. It'll be interesting to see what comes of this. It might fail, but not anytime soon I think.

No third party site is good to build a long term business on. Social media and everything else will come and go. If you're able to leverage it while it lasts, good, but trying to turn every little fad into a marketing tool is sad and annoying.

I bet that anybody who uploaded a Getty image to Pinterest is going to cost them a pretty penny! And as it well should, if the majority of their content is "hot" or suspect or pirated from others!

Word is, Getty Images has a full time staff very well versed in seeking out those who use their images without authorization.

Pinterest is still very much alive for me and is still sending me 200-1,000 visitors per day which is more than Facebook and Twitter combined and then some.

Once Pinterest work out how to eradicate the spammers then it will continue to grow and grow.

Pinterest is all visual with little reading. People like pictures more than reading, thus the appeal.
It appeals to the ADD and laziness that each of us possess a wee bit of!

I am obsessed with it, and I've also noticed that many of my friends have recently jumped on the wagon. But I've also noticed that some of my early friends do not as often frequent the site.
