Confused about creating a niche product

Hi all,

I just wondered how everyone tackles the process of creating their own product. Let's say I want to write an ebook. I know a little about cats, so I look for some keywords with fairly high searches (around 1,000 searches a month), but low competition. These are the keywords I find:

cat sneezing
cat scratch posts

Everyone says the money's in the list, so should I create a website about cat sneezing for example, write an ebook about cat sneezing and then promote on the website? Or should I create a squeeze page? Or both?

Say I manage to get a hundred or so on my list (I would imagine this number to be really small as very few would sign up to hear more about cat sneezing related topics). Would I then send the list an email with links to other cat products? They may unsubscribe because their cat has stopped sneezing so there is no need to receive emails from me.

I'm just really confused about how to develop a relationship with people on the list when it comes to niche subjects. Surely if your website was more general about cats, people would sign up to hear about all sorts of things, but I can't create a website about cats in general as it's so competitive.

What process do you all take to create lists from niches and how do you keep them on the list?

Thanks for any help,

J

Are you going to sell the ebook or give it away for free?

If you are selling it then you would need a squeeze page if you are giving it away for free then you need a form for email capture on your website. Capture the email then they download the ebook.

You will need an auto responder to capture the emails into.

When you have people on your list you can then email them details of products related to cat sneezing or what every your niche is. You can also produce more ebooks or products and promote them to your list too.

Good question, Ruki. I hadn't thought about whether to sell or give away for free.

I guess giving away the ebook would be a great way to build up a list.

      Thanks.

    • I believe cat sneezing should just be among your target niche topics. Other niche topics can be minor annoyances, irritations and allergies, among other common problems that most cats may experience from time to time. And, focus on common problems that a lot of cat lovers, generally, wouldn't most likely know how to solve on their own, unless they consult a vet. Then, I recommend doing the following things, since you must sound like a friendly resource of useful content, info and advice about such topics:

      • Develop your onsite content, in ways that can inform and educate your target viewers, about the problems your cat has experienced, time and again, the advice you got from your vet, the things you did, when you followed your vet's advice, the exact results you got, and the other things you do that prevent similar problems from happening again...

      • Develop a guide/tutorial, that offers more detailed and more specific info and advice, on how to solve such problems. The content of this product should offer beneficial tips, info and advice, that they can't get from your site and from anywhere else. Then, sell this product on your site. Next, post it as an affiliate product in affiliate networks. At this point, offer a 90% or more commissions per sale, to entice more people to sign up, as your affiliates. These people will help you drive more traffic and populate your mailing list, with buyer traffic. Of course, integrate your mailing list subscription process, into the sales page on your site for this product, so buyers can opt-in to your mailing list...

      • Promote your site, content, product, services and your affiliate sign up pages in those affiliate networks. You can do this through PPC/PPV/PPM, private ad space rentals, solo email ads, content syndication and guest authoring in contextually relevant, high authority syndication networks and sites in your niche, and contribute useful and relevant info/advice in contextually relevant, high authority sites, blogs and online social networks/groups/communities, especially those with large regular readership, active membership and active mailing list subscriber bases...

Do take note that you couldn't most likely develop a high quality product, if you just know "a little" about your target niche. This doesn't mean you can't target the niche, though, since, like I said above: Tell your target viewers, about the info and advice, provided by your vet, as solutions to the problems experienced by your cat. This also means you can interview your vet, and your other friends with relevant expertise in such subject areas, so they can add more value to the content of your site and product...

      Hope this helps...

Depending on your niche selection, i imagine that the price of your product would be around $19. I would lead people straight to the sales letter page of the cat product that you are selling.

Another great way to capture leads is with a facebook fan page. You can set it up so that you can give your ebook away in exchange for a 'like'. Once the visitor 'likes' the page, they will then see your sign up form for your newsletter.

To get people to visit your fan page, try signing up for some groups that deal with similar interests and discreetly mention it along with providing some useful info. You can also 'friend' people in these groups (as you already know they are interested in your topic) and then invite them to your fan page.

You could also try purchasing facebook ads and driving traffic that way.

Keywords are great to write articles or pages about, they might or might not be worth it to produce an entire product about.

Before you create a niche product, it would be important to find out if anyone cared enough about the topic to buy something. Even if you are creating a product to give away, it still pretty important to find out if anyone wants to spend any money.

So it would be good to find out if there are any competing products in the marketplace that people are already buying. You definitely do not want to be the only product.

Here's what works for me... it might work for you, it might not:

Single page offering a free ebook in exchange for email address.

The ebook tells them WHAT they need to do to solve their problem.

Book also contains a sales pitch to an advanced ebook telling them HOW to solve their problem.

This way you're genuinely delivering value to your market when asking for the sale, and you can always throw in a OTO on (or before) the 'thank you page'.

The relationship / sales pitch happens at the same time... they both go hand in hand with each other. So you help them a bit, then ask them to pay for more advanced help - all in the same email.

At least that's what works for me, but someone else might have a better way of doing things.

    Good luck Jodie.

Just a suggestion, will you be able to post this on Ebay and sell at a cheap price, with that you can offer your buyer whether they like to be in your list to continue receive information about this particular niche. This list may be very targetable and they are your buyer list.

I have not done anything on Ebay marketing before. If this is not allowed, do let me know too, thanks.

Thanks guys. All really helpful stuff.

Now for the market research. Is there a procedure for this? What do most people do?

Do you mean research for the market demand? WE can check if you niche is in demand, you can simply check under the amazon best seller category. Otherwise, check under the major shopping directory such as shopping.com or ezine directory.

You can also do keyword research, simply go to google adwords tool to find the demand from the market.

    Thanks JaynKeth.

I'm just wondering how useful Amazon best sellers would be. Using the above example, if I create an ebook about cat sneezing, it may be a flop, but the Amazon best sellers list may show lots of cat products.

How does one go about deciding if a product is likely to be profitable? I'm guessing there are lots of factors to take into account?
