Are You A Business Owner, OR Are You Just Chasing Fairies?

Every day when I open the forum, I see people who are primarily focused on individual metrics, in hopes that those individual items will make them a success...

JOE MARKETER: How can I get more FaceBook Likes?

ME: Are you converting those FB Likes to Sales?

JOE MARKETER: I need more Twitter Followers...

ME: Do you generate sales from Twitter?

JOE MARKETER: How can I get more people to follow me on Pinterest?

ME: Do the people who currently follow you on Pinterest buy stuff so that you can make money?

JOE MARKETER: I have PageRank 3...

ME: Has that improved your traffic and sales conversion?

JOE MARKETER: How can I get more traffic to my YouTube videos?

ME: Is the traffic on your YouTube Videos delivering buyers to your website?

JOE MARKETER: How can I get Yahoo Answers not to delete my links?

ME: Is Yahoo Answers really the best place to advertise your stuff?

JOE MARKETER: I did a link blast, but I am not getting any traffic from it...

ME: Did you make a compelling case for people to click your link and visit your website?

JOE MARKETER: How came I am not making any money online?

ME: Because you are chasing the wrong metrics.

I think this is the case.

I wrote a thread about people trying to drive the car without an engine because I don't see anything about proper business talk in the forum.

It's all about chasing fairies like you say.

I guess that's what happens when you can just grab a link from somewhere like Clickbank and "theoretically" make money straight away.

I'm assuming most of these people are teenagers.

        Which part?

        Being a teenager?

        Or chasing fairies?

        :p

Bill, you forgot the "How can I make $1,000 by the end of the day?" and "How much money are you making?" posts.

These kind of questions tend to be asked by thrillseekers and opportunists who are drinking in the 'Last Chance Saloon' and can't afford to pay the bar tab.

If I had mentioned those, there would have been no room left for discussion.

Nope, they're not. That's why it's so surprising at first.

Most of them are people with jobs, credit/debit cards and all that. Perfect prey. It makes sense.

"Get back here and give me money!"

"You're never gonna gonna catch me!"

Oh BTW, I resent my namesake being used for this (and as a plumber, farmer, and anything else politicians like to attach Joe to. I'm about to just change my freaking name).

    OK, now on to seriousness:

    1. Read and understand what Bill said.

...That's it. Once you get that, the way forward is pretty clear.

    Great point!

Many people are setting the wrong kind of targets for their businesses, and so their potential success is limited.

Good you have started this thread - now you can save a lot of time copy pasting instead of rewriting everything.

Right at this particular moment, I think I was just chasing a fairy. :p

In all seriousness, I was just thinking about this the past couple of days.

People don't know why things work. But sometimes this is something you need to know and knowing it can save you a ton of time.

As per your example, someone might want a bunch of facebook likes, but have no clue what for or why it might work for them or even know if they should be using facebook in the first place.

I think some products out there condition people to mindless thought processes and may not go into enough detail of why something should be done.

This could be the difference between a $7 ebook and a $77 dollar ebook too.

    As usual Bill, great post

I try and make a habit of reviewing what I have done in my business on a weekly basis. Did the activities I do that week help or hinder my end goal of building a sustainable business?

Too often the answer is 'hinder' because I get sidetracked by the detail instead of focussing on the bigger picture. Hopefully in a year's time I will be better at it

Everyone in this world need easy money. which is not possible in real. Who ever you are a business owner or something else don't think that Ginny will come and move its stick and your PayPal will be full of $$$. Stop thinking cock and bull stories. Just start working in the right path that will drag you to the $$$.

I think this is rooted from the fact that in order for people to sell their products, they must oversell the need in order for clients to become hungry for more. Take a look at the usual sales letters and you'll see that common pattern.

Don't know why you say that.. Everything he says is true..

I used to be impressed with a Fanpage with 10000 likes but now I go down and look at engagement. No engagement means it's worthless.

      Same thing goes for Twitter..

Not necessarily "I made it" but that people focus on the wrong things.

LOL.. Yea I've fallen for one of those "fairy" products on clickbank.. Logically it works but not like it said in the video..

The things that will always work across all niches & businesses is:

-Education (trial & error is a great teacher)
    -Hard work
    -Testing
-A bad memory (forget the failures)
    -DEDICATION
    -Focus

    Great post my man..

Most people focus on being self employed rather than an entrepreneur or a real business owner. This alone is what I think separates "the worker" from "the business man."

A plumber I know touts "I'm a real entrepreneur" all of the time to the point its annoying. His statements are usually are directed towards me in a smug way because I employ people and he feels that because he doesn't, his business is more efficient and more profitable because it has less overhead. However, I can walk away from my business for weeks at a time and it will still run and I will still make money. As proof of my opinions, when he was sick during a cancer scare for two months, he had to struggle for months to make up for his loss of income.

This relates to people online as well who do not actually run a business but instead try to accomplish a task in hopes it will relate to bring in money down the road.

"I made a Clickbank product, now I sit back and other people will make the sales for me!"

    1 week later:

"My Clickbank product wasn't approved, I'll have to change it up a bit."

    4 weeks later:

"My Clickbank product was resubmitted and approved, now I can collect sales"

    4 weeks later:

"No sales yet, Im going to buy some black hat link building service for $5 on Fiverr, then I'll make sales"

    2 weeks later:

"2 sales of 24.99, I've made $50, oh yeahhhh, I'm a damn professional! Time for me to start teaching other people about how to make money online in the form of a new Clickbank product and WSO! "

The headline of their new product:

"Digital Entrepreneur makes $1500/mo with just 10 minutes of effort!"
