Help - I need benchmark for Big Corp Email Marketing Success

I'm doing a pitch about the importance of lead capture by using email signup and promotion through email marketing. Basic IM strategy stuff...

In order to make the right impact though, I could really use a benchmark or two from major company who uses this in their marketing efforts. Can anyone suggest some? I'm looking for primarily major purchase, retail examples. The only biggies I can think of are maybe Amazon.

(I'm sure I could probably think of more, but i'm crunching in the dark depths of powerpoint land and my brain is dead...)

Any help or input would be appreciated.

If you're referring to companies like TigerDirect or Digital Juice they rely heavily on email marketing. In fact, being on their list is a good thing if you're a buyer in those markets.

Unlike the IM MMO niche they don't feel a need to 'bond' with you to be able to pick your pocket. They know you know they are a retail seller and the only reason people stay on their lists is keep up to date with what's new, or what's on sale.

Additionally, their emails are generally very professional pieces low on hype and straight to the point..."Here's what we've got...here's how to buy it".

It appears they have teams who put together their email offerings. Copywriters and graphic designers working with their webmasters to produce high quality pieces. Any sizable company moving into the email marketing arena will no doubt need to put those kind of teams together.

They mail out very frequently, and since you as a subscriber know every email is a pitch to a discounted offer the emails are not intrusive, but welcome. I've bought thousands of dollars worth of stuff through email offers from companies like the ones I mentioned above. It's a solid way to market, and a great way to keep up to date if you're a subscriber.

Check out this site for various reports on email marketing and various statistics. More detailed information will cost $$$ but they have some articles and case studies you can read online. They also hold an email summit every year to discuss the topic.
