Another "new guy" question...

by Shaper

I have found an interest in IM just in the last few days. To say I am new to all of this would be an understatement.

I would like to know if there is a site (or sites) that I can go that will introduce me to every aspect step by step and on a very basic level to begin.

I am not asking for a get rich quick scheme, or a sales funnel. Just real, soild material that I can study to learn the business from the ground up. From lurking here I have skimmed just the top off of the whole pot it seems. Now, it is getting to be information overload.

I am getting more familiar with the terms, and with the breadth and scope of this world. Because of that, I think I could use some direction and focus.

Anyone have any sage advice (that is not a sales pitch) to help someone trying to genuinely learn the business and find a place within it?

  • This isn't sage advice, rather something that has been going on for decades: Offer something of value to a group of people in exchange for money, develop free materials that can show them you have more than enough expertise to know what you're saying, establish your reputation as someone who knows what you're saying in the places where they hang out, promote your offers in those places, entice your buyers to sign up to your mailing list, continue providing valuable content, develop or choose new things to offer and promote those to your mailing list, and continue doing what works for you...

OK, this is based on my experience. I was in exactly the same position last summer and if I could go back and start again then this is what I would do:

In every forum you will see sticky sections above the discussion forums and there is an awful lot of stuff in there. All in one threads are superb.

Next, go to the Articles section and start reading. Keep notes as you go, copy and paste things that make sense, seem interesting and so on.

Do not spend money on WSOs at all until you have some idea what you are planning to do. In fact, just don't go there.

Do some searches on the forum. Just put in questions and see what comes up. Keep letting that info soak in and don't worry if it is all confusing.

Ask around for who are the clever, helpful and insightful people. Then go to their blogs and see what they talk about. I like a few Alexa Smith, Alyiona, James Scoles, CDarklock and plenty of others.

There are lots of freebies in signatures - watch out these are designed to get you to join their subscriber list. You could end up with hundreds of e-mails.

Take your time, think about where you want to end up. You may not even realise where you will end up at this stage

This is just some of the stuff I would do

This is all you need to know. Period. Everything else is just moving parts of this.

      Hi,

Welcome to the world of IM!

The best advice I can offer to you is find something you would be interested in pursuing and then start small.

There are many different ways to make money on the internet but not everything is right for everyone. Take a look at the different techniques and try to find one that fits for you. Maybe you'd enjoy running a blog, maybe building a list, maybe you would just want to make products or offer a service. The key is to find something you won't mind spending a lot of time on.

Once you've found what you want to do you should try to start small. Pick one niche and build one site. Start one blog. Create one product. Offer one service. This will help to keep everything manageable and you will be able to learn the details without worrying about too many different things.

After you've figured a few things out and have experienced some success and solved a few problems you've run into you'll be ready to add to it and expand.

Try not to overwhelm yourself. Do something you'll enjoy and keep it simple.

      Best of luck!

I definitely agree with this statement.

The pitfall I see with many people starting online is they try to do too much. The best way to do well is start small and focus on a single niche/topic. Use this as a learning experience where you get a hang of building an Internet business.

The trick here is FOCUS. Once you find a great income model; you have to ignore the thousands of offers that people are pitching.

        That's my $.02.

I was in your place a little over a year ago and I actually found out about IMing when I was googling "make money online". I had just had a baby and was looking for ways to make extra money. I got suckered in by an IMer and bought an e-book that got me started. It was not that great of a e-book but it introduced me to the whole IMing world.

If I had known about internet marketing, I would never have bought a thing. I would have came here, searched the 5 star threads. Then try to come up with some good questions of my own to ask. Maybe once you have an idea of who to trust, then buy a guide or just try to do things on your own.

One of the important bits of advice I got here, that I should have listened to sooner, is to buy your own domain name and hosting. Start a website, that you own, and go from there. I wasted quite a bit of work on blogger before I was convinced that I should be hosting my own site. (It cost about $50 the first year for hosting and anywhere from $1.99 - about $10 for your domain name.) I was convinced to do everything on my own, for free, and I still am other than the hosting and now I am also paying for aweber (used to capture emails).

Good luck to you. Find something you are knowledgable and /or passionate about to start your site around!!

Yep the sticky threads are awesome. Warrior forums are especially good. But also try DP forums and sitepoint forums.

    • I think the best thing anyone do is pick a niche and put a website up; just make sure you can create enough content around the subject. It is best to do all of the work yourself in the beginning. This will help you learn how things work. This may not be the site you make any money on. I have had many sites that didn't make me much money, but I have learned a lot from them.

Then my suggestion is to read real case studies, especially ones where people share their real experiences and you can verify it by seeing real sites and search engine rankings. Apply the things you see them doing. Continue to iterate through the process of studying and applying. It is the only way you will understand how all of this stuff works.

Get yourself familiar with the terms used first. Know the various aspects of IM, such as SEO, PPC, Article Marketing and more.

I disagree with the rest here of learning youself. I must stress that its hard to differentiate between what is crap material and quality stuff. You can easily get "lost" in the overwhelming information, getting information overload and end up spending alot more.

So my advice to you is to find an expert who teaches live coaching. Although it is expensive and you might think you can self-learn.

      The fact is YOU CAN'T!

Trust me, go for seminars find a coach and undergo live training. It will be alot faster and less information overload. I know cos I have been there and done that.

      Mark my words.

Certainly if you can afford live coaching, webinars and 1 on 1 support then great!

I had very little money after getting laid off so I have self taught.... and this is why I say "stay away from WSOs" until you know what you can do because I spent a fair bit (not masses, $200 to $300 maybe) on WSOs before I realised what I was doing.

It is hard to self teach but it is doable. You need the right resources, time and to think carefully.

I agree that if you can afford to get a "coach" then that is probably your best bet. But if you are like most of us newbies you cannot afford the type of coach that he is referring to....then you can learn a lot through free material.

I totally disagree that you can't learn on your own, if you are willing to put in the work (and it will take work). A little over a year ago I did not know anything about the computer / internet etc except for the basic emailing. Now a year later I am making some consistent money / building a decent list (a year ago I had not even heard of a "list") / and hoping to scale up from there. I know I am just a newbie myself but I would hate for other newbies to think self-learning is impossible.

I'm not sure if this lives up to the level of 'sage advice', but here goes...

The first thing to recognize is that Internet Marketing is not a business in and of itself, so you'll make yourself crazy trying to "learn the business." At best, IM is a collection of different businesses that all use some of the same tools and techniques to accomplish widely varying goals. Better to approach things as investigating which variant strikes a chord with you.
    • A blogger looking to make money from Adsense clicks
    • An article marketer looking to build a mailing list and earn commissions from recommending products
    • A product developer looking to sell, both directly and via affiliates
    • A freelancer making looking to make money by providing services

All of these might call themselves "Internet Marketers", but the underlying business models are different.

The one thing they all have in common is that they trade value for value. Find out how you want to do that, and can offer enough value to get back enough to meet your goals, and you'll be golden.

Well I pretty much have my heart set on my own site. My enjoy and have a decent amount of knowledge in disaster preparedness, survival, Permaculture, and other similarly related topics. I was hoping to do something with a bit of affiliate marketing and some marketing my own material later on. A monthly membership would be nice, but as of now I cannot see what I could provide that would keep folks paying per month.

So, I would probably, as of now, fall under the "A product developer looking to sell, both directly and via affiliates" category.

Is there some reference material that could help me from 0 for this type of project? Keep in mind that I am a soldier who has a fixed income, and obvious commitments to job.

It might seem a little self-serving (for the WF), but a small investment in joining the War Room will give you access to what you need. Pay particular attention to the "My Ideas, Strategies and Plans" section. That's where Allen Says has a lot of excellent material, both from here and the old forum. Absorb some of that, then take some time to let it marinate before diving into the main WR section. The cost is around $30 for a 20-year subscription.

And keep posting good questions here in the main section. It won't take long until you figure out who really knows their stuff on developing products and promoting them.

As for that job commitment - thank you for your service...

Considering some of the vague, mis-guided and completely subjective advice I feel for you OP.

I came to this forum not too long ago so I can hopefully understand where you're coming from.

What I think your asking for is a website that provides definitions and examples of certain IM terms, as well as explanations on the different avenues you can pursue in making money online.

To be completely honest, I planned to make this site after my first site.

          Displaying definitions of things like:

          - Do follow links
          - Black hat / white hate SEO
          - Article syndication
          - What is considered duplicate content
          - H1 titles
          - List building
          - Keywords

With examples for each one. Then a section of the different ways to make money online with case studies, advantages / disadvantages of each strategy etc.

This can all be found by spending enough time on the forums. However you have to crawl through so much information that is not giving the whole picture, or completely wrong.

There was a topic the other day about article submission to article directories, spinning articles and duplicated content. The amount of wrong information that was being posted was shocking. Luckily Alexa Smith came and saved the day for that thread (pro tip, search for Alexa Smith on this forum.

So if I ever do make it, I will let you know.

Also, don't believe the people posting here saying you HAVE to get someone to help you or you HAVE to take a training course / mentor.

You don't, you just need to spend the time and gather enough research to formulate your own opinion.

Yea, I would love a site just like that right now. Get to work! :p j/k Honestly, I hope by the time that happens I will have a better than basic grasp on IM (or at least the specific disciplines I want to use) I am a pretty quick study, and have nothing but time out here in the sandbox once our missions are over.

Thanks again do everyone for the helpful hints and ideas. I am sure I'll be around to bother you folks again soon with another question, or 60.

I've just downloaded a plethora of free vids, e books, and seminars (most of them are a little old, but most of the basics still apply, I hope) looks like I got some seat time to put in. Thanks again everyone!

P.S. Speaking of being thankful...how in the HELL do you thank someone's post in this forum? I feel like a retard right about now.

To me one of the most important aspects in this business and the thing that actually has gotten me to the point where I'm starting to make a little bit of money off it is at some point you really need to buckle down and take action. I know you said that your just starting out and this forum is honestly a tremendous wealth of knowledge and there are a ton of very helpful people here that will answer your questions about anything... as you've already seen in this thread. With that being said don't spend way to much time reading and doing research you get the best experience from getting your hands dirty, I feel like a major problem with people failing in this business is looking for the perfect opportunity and switching there strategies too quick. People telling you to picking a domain and hosting and get cracking are absolutely right, some people get stuck on reading about others success and fantasizing it was them, but if you really want to achieve it for yourself you have to be prepared to grind it out, stick your head down and work your tail off. Great things don't come easy and I.M. has the same principles as every other job.

The best advice: do a MARKETING course.

Internet marketing is marketing, first and foremost. If you understand the basics of marketing, you'll succeed.

The WF is a wonderful place, but it's an open secret that a high percentage of the folk here never make a cent online.

That's a real shame. I'm convinced it's because the people who fail think there's a magic bullet; some system or loophole or trick which will help them to make millions.

People do make millions. But they understand the basics of marketing. Everything builds on that. It's the foundation.

I've no idea where you live, but many countries have some kind of open university system, or night classes.

Do a marketing course. You'll never regret it.

Failing that, grab a marketing 101 text book, which contains exercises. Once you understand the theory, you can get practical experience online.

Big tip: marketing starts with a market. There are unlimited markets.

To succeed in IM, you need to choose a market which responds to YOU.

Once you understand the basics of marketing, you can research markets which appeal to you, to see whether they respond to you. Many markets won't, even if others are hugely successful in that space. Once you find YOUR best markets, success is inevitable.

Enjoy the journey. It's huge fun. I wish you much success. :-)

    Cheers

    Angela

    Hi Shaper,

I know the feeling. I would suggest you start out by understanding the basics first. There are so many forums here that you can look for info on as well forums like digital point & site point.

I wouldn't buy a paid WSO just yet. But I would take a look at free WSOs in my area of interest within IM that I want to increase my knowledge on.

    Basics -
    1) You need hosting for a website. I use hostgator & I'm happy with them. Ask others.
    2) You need an autoreponder. I use aweber & I'm happy. Ask others as well.
    3) You need to create a "network" for all your social media because google likes that
ie link your FB, twitter, youtube & website.
    4) Use google adwords keyword tool to do research for keywords to include in the titles of your articles. Use the keywords only 3-7% in the article to avoid google-slap

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!

    -Jay

IMO you will be lost because you will be tempted to try out a lot of the products etc... pick a niche... start with that... and become an expert on it. Internet Marketing may sound like a simple thing where you see a lot of people making money... these people were where you are today. I myself am not an internet marketer, but have a WSO... so I brought on a JV (Joint venture) partner and he launched it for me... point is this... if you have a product that will contribute something original find people to work with that have been here for a while... if you just want to promote products, WF is the best place to learn, but I would also check out:

    CLICKBANK.COM
    JVZOO.COM

There are others I'm sure, but start off with those and most importantly have fun and don't let all the opportunities you find throw you into a spiral of confusion like it did with me when I first started, lol.

I found a site by a guy names Chris Farrell. He has a lot free info on his site that has been helpful so far. However, I am not sure if it would be worth the monthly fee to access the other info...anyone subscribe to this guy or know if his material is worth it?

Ok...who would you recommend and why?

I read in another thread a while back about a guy that does a similar site to Chris Farrel, but for the life of me I can't find it or remember who it was.

Ian Someone, maybe? Supposedly had quite a bit of free material on his site. Wish I could find that thread again.

    1. Get a niche that you have interest in.
Find out if others are interested in that
niche by going to big-boards (dot) com
and seeing if there are any forums devoted
    to that niche.

    2. Then, go to Google's Keyword
External tool and see if your niche's keywords
    are searched by over 1,500

    3. Get a Wordpress self-hosted blog using your
niche's main keyword as a domain (either .com,
.net or .org.-if they're taken, add suffix, like "blog",
"news", "times", etc..). Use Hostgator. They work best.
    * Articles: study how to write them using these forums;
    * Videos: create easy ones using Animoto. Great for newbies.
    * Podcasts: Blogtalkradio and and other similar sites.

    4. Post to your blog 1-3 times a week. Write articles,
create videos & podcasts using your niche's main
keywords-phrases of 3 words or more searched
1,500/month are best (these are called "long-tailed
keywords"). use your keywords in your titles. Make
your titles attractive, sticky and get readers curious:
"5 Ways How to...", "How to...(keyword phrase)", etc.

Cjeck out Digg and Stumbleupon for the most popular types
of titles. Use them for templates.

    5. Get an autoresponder service, like Aweber or Getresponse.

    6. Study how to market. Study how to market. Do this as you
go. Ask questions. Apply answers. Step-by-step. IM forums like
this one, DP forum and sitepoint forums are great.

    7. Get an "exit pop", which captures visitors when they visit your
    site to your autoresponder.

    8. Market to your autoresponder list products that you can sell to
them as an affiliate through Clickbank-products that solve problems
they may have in the niche. Later, learn to build your own products
and sell them, eventually recruiting affiliates to do the dirty work for
    you.

    9. For each step, learn exactly how to get each step done before
undertaking it. Study the basics of such skills as copywriting. Copywriting
is salesmanship in print. Look up Gary Halbert, Ben Settle, etc.You need to
at least understand what motivated prospects to optin onto your lists and
what gets them to buy from you. This is key in marketing.

Build a swipe file that show the best of everything listed ere. From articles,
videos, etc. to autoresponder messages and salesletters, you should bookmark
and copy to a folder anything that is successful and seek to mimic the spirit
of these successes in your business.

    10. Always study how to best get traffic to your website. Free or paid,
Google or Facebook, social media or forums. Find out the best ways to get
your messages to the masses to get them to visit your blog. It's all about being
    "sticky".

Done! Been a part of the prepping/survival community for years now.

      2. Then, go to Google's Keyword

Done...my niche would meet that criteria fairly well.

      3. Get a Wordpress self-hosted blog using your

      * Podcasts: Blogtalkradio and and other similar sites.

I'll work on setting that up tonight.

      4. Post to your blog 1-3 times a week. Write articles,
create videos & podcasts using your niche's main
keywords-phrases of 3 words or more searched

your titles attractive, sticky and get readers curious:
"5 Ways How to...", "How to...(keyword phrase)", etc.

This shouldn't be a problem, I am always posting reviews, how to's etc. on various fourms within the community.

Check out Digg and Stumbleupon for the most popular types
of titles. Use them for templates.

How do I find out which of their titles are most popular? How would one "use them as templates"? DO you mean somehow get the html code or just pattern yours after the popular ones?

      5. Get an autoresponder service, like Aweber or Getresponse.

I saw the deal about autoresponders while researching on Ferguson's site. In the works once the money comes available (read: approval from "the boss"

      6. Study how to market. Study how to market. Do this as you
go. Ask questions. Apply answers. Step-by-step. IM forums like
this one, DP forum and sitepoint forums are great.

      As we speak...

      7. Get an "exit pop", which captures visitors when they visit your
      site to your autoresponder.

Not familiar with that term...is it anything like a squeeze page? Could you link an example, or better yet a tutorial on an "exit pop'?

      8. Market to your autoresponder list products that you can sell to
them as an affiliate through Clickbank-products that solve problems
they may have in the niche. Later, learn to build your own products
and sell them, eventually recruiting affiliates to do the dirty work for
      you.

Seems like a solid plan...I am seeing this method come up quite a bit.

      9. For each step, learn exactly how to get each step done before
undertaking it. Study the basics of such skills as copywriting. Copywriting
is salesmanship in print. Look up Gary Halbert, Ben Settle, etc.You need to
at least understand what motivated prospects to opt-in onto your lists and
what gets them to buy from you. This is key in marketing.

      Will do.

Build a swipe file that show the best of everything listed ere. From articles,
videos, etc. to autoresponder messages and salesletters, you should bookmark
and copy to a folder anything that is successful and seek to mimic the spirit
of these successes in your business.

Could you explain what a "swipe file" is and how it is made?

      10. Always study how to best get traffic to your website. Free or paid,
Google or Facebook, social media or forums. Find out the best ways to get
your messages to the masses to get them to visit your blog. It's all about being
      "sticky".

Does this become a constant "upkeep" type thing to stay on top or does this eventually become more automated?

      HTH,
      Vince aka makingiants

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna stop talking; I need a nap!
Thanks so much for all of the detailed info and step-by-step guidance. This is EXACTLY what I am looking for. Cheers!

Exit Pop: A window which is programmed to show only when a visitor attempts to leave your site. Usually contains an offer of some sort, either a subscription or discounted offer. They range from highly effective to really annoying.

Swipe File: A collection of ads, phrases, headlines and other materials used for inspiration/modelling without flat-out copying. For example, once you start finding those headlines mentioned above, you might start saving them in a file for use as templates. "How to _________ by __________", then just fill in the blanks and tweak until it 'sounds right.'

Is there a good place to get an Exit Pop template that you know of?

...Did anyone ever figure out who that other guy was that ran a site like Chris Ferrell's? Supposedly, he has a huge amount of info available so it would be nice to see what its worth, lol.

There's a bunch of them out there. I don't use them much, but they can be done with relatively simple javascript. The popup window itself is just a minimal web page with your parting offer and an opt-in form.

            You can start here:

            http://www.willmaster.com/library/fe...w-behavior.php

The article shows how to pop the window up when your page loads, but you can also load the window when the page unloads.

My best advice would be to find several reliable sources of free quality training and instruction.

The Warrior Forum is a great place to start. You can find a wealth of free training here. Look in the internet marketing forums. Youtube is another good source of free training.

Start small, building your business, and reinvest in your business when you began to make some money online to grow your business.

Forgive the blatant self plug but this is exactly the type of site I'm developing right now - the link is in the sig. I'm concentrating on articles to help not just complete newbies but also publishers who've been at this for a while and need help fine-tuning their sites for SEO and revenue.

My advice (and this comes from someone that was in your shoes like most of us here) join the war room and start looking through there. This is an investment that will pay dividends over and over and over again.

I am a newbie too, and I actually started my internet business a few days ago. However, I am already receiving subscriptions and sales. I went for tons of workshop and I can finally categorize non- SEO traffic to these five types.

    1. Article marketing : By writing articles related to your keywords, it adds your ranking and creates many backlinks and clicks to your web, besides branding you. Just submit articles to Ezine articles( use it a lot), and start building traffic. Oh yeah, you can also get others to write for you if you are not one for writing. Something like freelancers.com should work for you well ! Post as many articles as you can as fast as you can to get better results.

    2. Video marketing : Make and post videos on youtube with your link! Make it funny or interesting and soon viewers will be flocking your site. As long as the content you give them is good, youtubers generally will see it. You can also make videos of you reading out the articles you have written and posted, it might be boring but at least it has good info!

    3. Blogging : Frankly, I am still trying it out and it is not really working for me, but other bloggers say that it is working for them. Just post a blog every day or two and try to put in good content in it. It seems you can also write it in a diary sorta style, as long as it is interesting! Use wordpress.

    4. Solo Ads : Paid traffic that does not guarantee subscribers. It is a great way to start out when your list is low, but start out slow. Test the waters first. See how many clicks or subscribers you are getting with them and reevaluate the worth of the solo ads. Generally, if you can get a certain amount of subscriptions or sales then, it is worth investing on. Really the trial and error system for internet marketing.

    5. Classified Ads : UsFreeAds is the classified ads strategy I am using right now. There are actually more targeted people to your niche by marketing it with classified ads. And besides it ranks fine on Alexa, the traffic ranking is 1k++ which is considered not bad. You might wanna try it out too !

Hope I helped, good luck !
