Wordpress Plugin: Need something to gather email addresses from users

My posts have pdf forms attached to them. My users are on my site to get these forms.

Is there a way to make someone put in an email address before they can download the file? Thus getting their contact info for my list?

Also, any good plugins for "membership" stuff?? I'd like to be able to charge a small membership fee for access to certain downloads. Thanks!

Sounds like you could use something like Wishlist Member.
Simply have everyone signup for a free membership to get all of them on your list and access to the PDF files, then you can use various membership levels, control options, or pay-per-post to have them pay for access to more specific content.

    Here's one for the optin:
WP Autoresponder - Email Newsletter And Autoresponder Plugin For WordPress
It can do auto-responses, follow-up, etc...
I dumped aweber for this plugin, it has an easy import/export tool, and you can send mails directly from your own server. Its fully customizable and you can even do a series of follow up emails with it.

In my books that's not really an advantage... on the contrary, it's a problem!

      1. The host might kick you out...
      2. The mail servers will blacklist you...
      3. Your messages will never reach your list members...

Well, if you have a "toy" list of 200-500 people it may work for a while. Anything more serious than that - and you will be shut down.

Remember me when you'll come back crying about your host!

Maybe I am an exception here, as I have a dedicated sever that handles my mailers. I do send out about 25,000 mailers a week but they are not handled by wp autoresponder and have no issues thus far (even with them being adult emails).

I do have a few IM related sites on my dedicated server that I use wp responder on and a couple of list that have over 1000 members, and no issues yet. Although 1000 subscribers here and there is still probably not enough to see any real problems yet.

I do appreciate your feedback on this, as I never really thought about being blacklisted and I will probably look into this a little further.

Honestly I have had constant issues with aweber and found that I much prefer handling my own list.

You are not the exception - you are among the many who are not able to give full info in their posts and make misleading statements.

Misleading statement make all the idiots to jump on the bandwagon without understanding all the consequences: in this case to start using that terrible plugin on a shared hosting environment (as 99% of ignorant WP users are on shared hosting!).

Even the plugin author knows the plugin is a piece of ____________ that will cause the users' IP being blacklisted - see their FAQ...

In your initial post you just "recommended" the plugin without explaining that
    a) you have a dedicated server for mailers
    b) your main mailing is NOT handled by the plugin
    c) the small lists that use the plugin are also on dedicated server

Therefore I consider your post rather harmful than useful for the novice and uneducated WP users.

The last thing I was trying to do was mislead anybody or be harmful in any way (and believe me I will not recommend it anymore). The truth is I do use it and it works very well for what I use it for. I have been on a dedicated sever for 5+ years and did not think fully that this would be a major factor behind the usefulness of a plugin.

I am not an email/list guru by any means but would like some more enlightenment (not being sarcastic) as to why this would not be good on a shared server.

I can understand the fact sending to many mails can cause your hosting account to get dropped or suspended.

What would cause the sever to get blacklisted, I understand that other clients on the server could get the server blacklisted if they are sending spam and whatnot. What other factors could come in to play on a shared server to warrant a blacklisting? If you are legitimately sending emails to your list of optin subscribers in full compliance what else would cause your server ip or domain to get blacklisted?

Couldn't simply requesting a dedicated ip address for your shared account avoid the blacklisting issues?

Take a look at S2 Member, it's pretty good at anything membership based.
