Hundreds of thousands may lose Internet in July

Here's an article that may be of interest to many Warriors: Hundreds of thousands may lose Internet in July | ksl.com

Here's a quote:

Hackers infected a network of probably more than 570,000 computers worldwide. They took advantage of vulnerabilities in the Microsoft Windows operating system to install malicious software on the victim computers. This turned off antivirus updates and changed the way the computers reconcile website addresses behind the scenes on the Internet's domain name system.

The DNS system is a network of servers that translates a web address -- such as www.ap.org -- into the numerical addresses that computers use. Victim computers were reprogrammed to use rogue DNS servers owned by the attackers. This allowed the attackers to redirect computers to fraudulent versions of any website.

The hackers earned profits from advertisements that appeared on websites that victims were tricked into visiting. The scam netted the hackers at least $14 million, according to the FBI. It also made thousands of computers reliant on the rogue servers for their Internet browsing.
The commenters on the linked article seem to think this story is just a scam. What do you think?

whatever it says in your quote is right. there are 2 parts of hacking here. one is hacking the website and inject malicious codes in the site so that the actual site redirects to something hackers want. this way they steal the site's traffic for their profit. code injection usually done by adding/altering the htaccess file or core files for the server/site.

another form of hacking is infecting the computer with virus. when you hear your processor/cpu spinning like crazy and you are not doing anything, you know your computer is working for some reason. this is when you should be alarmed. you will also notice your computer slowing down a lot due to this additional load. basically whats happening is, hackers are controlling your PC and using it to their advantage. usually hackers just hack computers and sell a batch of hacked/compromised computers to spammers (thats how hackers make money in this business, they don't do it for fun) and spammers then use thousands of computers worldwide to send out spam emails.

so whatever the article says is true but i dont see how millions of people can lose internet connection in July due to this. its not like this is something new.

If you're CPU is spinning I think you have even more reason to be concerned! You make a good point though!

Bleagh. Could someone please inject some intelligence into this thread? It never ceases to amaze me how people will comment on something without actually knowing what it is they're commenting on.

Not that I participate in such dark, evil forums
or anything so terrible, but I have read and
even seen examples of success from many of
the forums on the Darknet... So yeah, there
will be quite a few Clearnet victims, but is
the scale in the "hundreds" of thousands?
That figure seems a little bloated?

From what I've seen, most of them are
    preparing for November, anyway.

    Major hacking event dates planned
by what I consider to be credible
    sources:

    1. November 5th
    2. November 17th
    3. November 21st

    All 2012, obviously.

    ...Of course when you're trolling
the Darknet, the concept of who
    is "credible" is relative.

The bit that sounds totally implausible to me is the idea that the FBI would set up two servers solely to keep 570k people worldwide online. More than that lose their internet on a daily basis for a whole range of problems. No-one worries about them, it's normal. They just phone their ISP or a computer person and get the problem fixed. What's the difference?

You know, I thought about using the website to check my computer...but my tinfoil hat says the FBI will put me into a database just for doing so.

      I'll take my chances.
