Bad senior WF members, bad. SPANK!

It's one thing for people to keep posting threads on the main forum that belong in subforums. (Seems like people have a particularly hard time getting those SEO threads into the SEO forum.) But it's another thing when senior WF members who should know better reply to these threads that belong elsewhere.

If you're replying to SEO, copywriting, etc threads here in the main forum, then you're part of the problem. No really. Because why should someone bother seeking out the correct subforum when they get all their answers here on the main forum?

Having said that, sometimes we all forget. You just start replying to a thread without thinking about whether it belongs in the main forum. Or maybe you're viewing today's new threads, so you take no notice whatsoever which forum you're in.

That's ok, it happens.

But how about we all make a little extra effort to take note of what we're replying to (this includes me -- we all do it from time to time). Maybe it will cut down on some of the main forum clutter when people realize they need to post in the right section to get their answers.

(Behavior modification. B.F. Skinner would be proud if it worked.)

And if you don't care about the forum rules -- then you're one of those I'm referring to in this thread title. Bad. Spank.

Perhaps nudge them in the right direction. Yes , I know its in the rules, but a polite" Your topic would be better served in xxxxxx section" would help.

Better than no response,IMHO. and less discouraging than no response.

I still get confused as to were to post.

Bear in mind, it is rather intimidating here, and takes courage for people to even post or comment.

An introduction thread would ease the way in, too.

Yes, gentle nudging is great. (Except for repeat offenders who aren't confused... which is another entirely diff problem.)

Then go back and answer the thread later when it's in the right section.

      Yes, good point.

There are "introduction threads" - in the stickies above each forum section.

But by replying, we are bumping these threads to the top so that mods can move them to the appropriate forum!

We even reply to incorrectly placed threads as a service to a forum that has offered us so much.

Reporting the thread is a quicker way (the best way) to let mods know the thread belongs in a different section.

I've noticed this happening as well. Maybe most of the senior WF members on viewing a thread, first focus on answering the question asked and then maybe or maybe not realize the misplacement of the thread.

I reply to some of these threads... only to tell them where they should have posted the thread. If you don't educate these guys then we'll have to keep moving their threads every time. Better to tell them the problem before moving them. You'd think most of them would notice their thread has been moved and the reasons why but I doubt it.

Well now Becky I'm hardly even verging on senior.

If you're replying to SEO, copywriting, etc threads here in the main forum, then you're part of the problem. No really. Because why should someone bother seeking out the correct subforum when they get all their answers here on the main forum?
You are completely right and I was in an SEO discussion myself. I don't know why I didn't even register that it was in the wrong forum, normally I do. There was no coffee in my office when I arrived. I'm putting it down to that.

Having said that, sometimes we all forget. You just start replying to a thread without thinking about whether it belongs in the main forum. Or maybe you're viewing today's new threads, so you take no notice whatsoever which forum you're in.
Yeah, I'm going to use that one.

It was a mistake Miss. I won't do it again Miss.

I do care about the rules but saying things like that will only encourage those who like a good spanking to break the rules.

    Shame on you.

Those of you who responded that we should be gentler with those who post in the wrong forum seem to be operating under the misapprehension that most of those folks do it by mistake. While there are some who are just new and have failed to notice that there are many sections, by far the majority of the offenders do it knowing full well what they're doing.

It really doesn't take that much thought, common sense or effort to at least read the titles of the various sections, does it? I've been a member of hundreds of forums over the years and guarantee I can count on one hand how many ever had only one section.

The majority do this because they think they'll get more attention that way and unfortunately, that's usually true. Turn off the attention and you'll turn off the incentive.

I don't think that's a good idea Will. This definitely keep the new discussions (for great threads) to slow down while putting a lot of pressure on the approving body since every single thread needs to be approved by them.

Yep. And I once heard a story about how the mods had to walk barefoot through the snow, uphill both ways, just to get to this forum.

Actually, this was certainly a different forum back in those days. Whenever I hear someone saying the senior WF members are "mean," I just smile. Back then if you said anything stupid, you'd be tarred, featherd and dragged through the townsquare.

That wasn't a bad thing, because it turns out when you do real business in the real world, people don't coddle and spoonfeed you and soothe you when things don't go right. (And for goodness sake, what kind of people come to the WARRIOR forum and expect a forum that's all sunshine and kittens?)

Nope. As I said in a previous post above, giving people a "nudge" in the right direction is a good idea... provided they're not repeat offenders (see Tina's post). The paddle is reserved for those who, as Tina said, know exactly what they're doing.

Now we just need to decide who's going to deliver the spankings. Bad behavior will either go up or down, depending on who we choose.

        LOL

But I am a repeat offender. I submitted after Joe to the SEO thread that got nuked earlier in the day.

And yes, I knew exactly what I was doing and why.

I am pulling my britches down now... How soon before you get here? :p

Now see what you've done Becky? Certain pervy seniors will be all over the misplaced SEO threads now so they can get a spanking from you. Happy? :p

To all of you lining up for a spanking, please see Joe in post #29. Yes, you may want to back out of this thread really quick like. Run while you still can.

        +++

Les -- meet you in the SEO forum in 10 minutes!

        +++

Suzanne -- ah, my evil plan uncovered. I was just wondering who the pervs are, and then I thought, all I have to do is use the word "spank" to smoke 'em out...

        +++

But aside from the fun, I am serious about what I said in the OP. Sometimes we gotta be like those friendly (elderly) Walmart greeters who cheerfully tell people how to find their way to the right section. And sometimes, well... we gotta put the smack down. Use your judgment to determine which is most appropriate.

Of course, we all have work to do in that regard (myself more than others, I respond to anything I have facts/opinions on regardless of section correctness).

Bad. Spank.

    Becky
Gosh darn it. I saw the word Spank and thought this was about something else. In any event, you've only encouraged me to do more of this since not everyone thinks a spanking is a bad thing.

        Jethro,
Actually, this was certainly a different forum back in those days. Whenever I hear someone saying the senior WF members are "mean," I just smile. Back then if you said anything stupid, you'd be tarred, featherd and dragged through the townsquare.
Yeah. And those were the members doing the blasting.

Interestingly, the "running gun fights" we used to see rarely developed into grudges. The group had a whole different attitude about results then. We'd rather someone point out the potential mistakes before we spent time and money on an idea than let us feel good and lose a lot of both.

We didn't expect people to hand us guarantees, either. Just suggestions and ideas we could test for ourselves.

I suspect a lot of the real old-timers here laugh often at the expectations of many of the "less patient" folks. We're just mostly too polite to do it in our "posting voice."

That wasn't a bad thing, because it turns out when you do real business in the real world, people don't coddle and spoonfeed you and soothe you when things don't go right. (And for goodness sake, what kind of people come to the WARRIOR forum and expect a forum that's all sunshine and kittens?)

I think as soon as you have a "Main Internet Marketing" area of the forum, you are simply asking for people to come in and post about whatever the hell they want.

At the end of the day, something in internet marketing is going to have something to do with something specific, therefore, it might be better placed in a sub category. So you can't really be TOO upset with people who post this stuff in the main area.

I mean, SEO and PPC are related to internet marketing aren't they? And web design? And affiliate marketing? And all that other junk?

Or we could just fill up the main area of the forum with PLEASE HELP ME IM A DESPERATE NEWBIE threads all day long.

    Jus sayin is all.

      Exactly.

If I came on here as a new forum member today and posted an idea, I'd get a lot of comments like:

      Go for it!

      You can do it!

      That sounds great!

...even if the idea was complete garbage.

I'd rather someone tell me the truth than try to make me feel good. Maybe that's because we didn't grow up in an era where everyone got medals just for participating?

Yep, I know exactly what you mean.

Today you see new members come on here from time to time who've been told that they need to post authoratatively in order to establish themselves as experts. They do get called onto the carpet, mostly. But not quite in the same way as years past.

Unless of course people adjust their glasses and note that there are quite a few subcategories. Or if they'd read the stickies that are labeled things like "New members: read this."

Although the people who don't read those sorts of things (or don't care) might be the same types of folks who don't read (or care about) terms or services on other sites. Then they come crying on here when they get banned from this, that or the other thing for trying to get around the site's rules.
