Whats the deal with Pinterest?

I finally started setting up my Pinterest account. I am putting up real photos that I have taken. I have also made a few boards with different subjects.

I am starting to understand it more as i tinker around with it. I am just curious to how you can convert Pinterest to sales. From what I can see is that the sales come by directing the photos to a website. (can you direct it to a affiliate?)....

Nevertheless, I do see how it CAN get traffic to my site. I am just wondering if you have to play the I follow you, for you to follow me game.

lol I know it looks confusing how I worded it. I guess what I am looking for is what you guys do and think about Pinterest?

As far as I know, you direct it to an affiliate link, but it might be better to direct it to your site where you can then have the affiliate link. I seem to remember reading about someone who was very successful on Pinterest using affiliate links and product images, and a bot to spam Pinterest with them!

One WSO reports that someone was making $1000 a day using numerous accounts with CPA links, etc, I believe they used some automation and would have one account issue invitations for the next batch of new ones.

It seems that small window of opportunity in which one can get away with wholesale spamming despite of Pinterest being aware of the problem could be closing soon.

Even if it's true (tend to take WSO claims with a grain of salt) spamming like that won't last for long. Popular sites get abused all the time and what gets abused... Gets remedied (and spammers get squashed like bugs in the process).

Best of building a longterm strategy that'll pay of in the long run.

Pinterest is junk. Nothing but bookmarking service populated and geared towards carfst, arts and cookery. Forget it. You are better off using this if you wnat to sell kindle book recipes, cooking apps etc ....none of which I have any interest in.

Screw this fad. Just another Quora

I have been messing around on it, and reading for a few hours now. I don't think its junk at all. I think if you build a real Pinterest. Interact with them build up a huge follower base relationship. You could make for sure make money. Sure building it up is going to take time but in the long run it would be worth it.

My understanding is that people are making real money in the space but it tends to be the people who typically market towards that demographic, the fashion and mommy bloggers, people understand that lifestyle and often bring with them there own following. You can get a lot of traffic because of the nature of repining it is relatively easy to make content go viral.

My advice would be if you are already targeting and understand that demographic then you can do really well, but I wouldn't jump ship if your typical customer is Finance/ Gamers/ Dating etc

It's for ladies, I heard. That'd explain why I couldn't even figure what it's spice. I stared at it for a little, as an airplane could be staring at an octopus. What Russel Mogul said --just a bookmarking service, like digg, stumble, delicious, and 300 others. But for ladies.

One can actually sell that. I wonder how pics of men would do there? Or maybe kittens?

Yeah you can put affiliate links on there. It's a social network so a good thing to do is put up pictures of really cool things and have an affiliate link to them on Amazon or something.

I don't think it would work well with digital offers because that isn't really something you can have a cool picture of. People follow each others likes and interests in the form of pictures, so you have to have cool stuff for anyone to care.

I like that. People tend to hate on the things they don't fully understand. This gives the believers the chance to make big $$$. Thanks for this by the way, I myself have a Pinterest account. I'm not making big bucks with it yet, but I needed that extra motivation.

      Stick with it.

I use it for a number of my offline clients.

I am doing particularly well for one client who owns a small gallery. she is getting orders from around the world and I am getting affiliate sales and CPA commissions from some of the stuff I pin on the board.

There are some really useful WSO's at the moment showing how to use it. That is how I started.

In it you advocate changing the Link to one of your own:

" Now you can also repin images that you find on other people's boards or on the general pages. The cool thing is you can replace the link that is there with one of your own. Be sure to use the @ button in your comments section and the person who created the pin will still get credit for the image and you have added a cool image and not stolen the image because you have given proper credit and notation. Plus, you now have another link to your money site."

But doesn't that go against what you said in the previous step about adding a link to my site and doesn't go against the whole reason I placed a Pin in the first place (to have it link to my site)? I'm really not interested in getting credit for the image I'm interested in getting ppl to my site. So what would be the point if someone just comes and changes the link as you prescribed?

        What am I missing here?

Hi There - I am a Pinterest gal as well and I think what Holly is trying to say, is that (1) You need to provide proper credit to pins, you can't steal pins from others and put your own links in and (2) The link you put in will be directing traffic to your site.

Can you clarify more concerning your question?

            She says:

            "LINKS
Now we all know how important links are. All images on Pinterest contain a link.So think about this; 1,360,000 daily visitors all looking at links, not just images but links.Pretty cool huh. So there are right and wrong ways to link. Lets start with the right wayto link.First, make sure to have a landing page, web page, blog post that the link leads to,it can even be on a free blog post that you have."

This I understand and is why I would be using Pinterest..to direct ppl to my site, page, offer, whatever.

But in the very next topic (I quoted her in my previous post) she mentions that you can replace the link with one of your own, but be sure to give the person credit with an @ symbol.

My question is if she is describing how to use Pinterest to get links to your site, why is she then telling you how to remove someones link and add your own? It seems that if I followed her advice and put my link in and someone else followed her advice and replaced mine what good did it do me. Do you see why I'm confused. And what I meant about the @ symbol was that my point for pinning is for a link back to my site not recognition that I pinned a picture.

I must be missing something here but that's how it reads to me hence the reason I was looking for more clarification.

There are certain site like Quizo that lets you make free quotes to pin to pinterest but the link goes back to Quizo. So those links I change to link to my site. I will also change a link on a popular pictures, like say one of famous person that is obviously not someones personal work. I have a site that deals with Winter Ski gear and such so I have several interesting pins of skiing that point to that site. It is not a specific product pin from a competitors site. so I have a picture from the U.S olympic ski team. I state in the text I got the pic on the U.S Ski team site and were they can find the original but I link the picture to my ski site. Basically follow the golden rule; I would not want someone to take and change my link on one of my product pictures that worked on for hours and I won't do that to others. That said if it is a good idea I will certainly try and do my own using the ideas I get from the other pin.

Too many people looking for quick fixes in the WF are rubbishing Pinterest because their spamming has failed to produce any results.

If you use Pinterest the way it was intended - to share things of interest - then you'll get a lot of good quality traffic.

In the first 27 days of April I've had nearly 6,500 visitors from Pinterest alone - see attached screenshot.

Since Pinterest implemented their restrictions to prevent spamming the game has changed a bit. You won't get much traffic simply Pinning your own stuff.

You need to get lots of other people sharing your content - and the best way to do that is to use high quality images on your website and include a Pin it button close to those images.

To see just how many items get Pinned from my blog, take a look here:

    Revitaliseyourhealth / Pinterest

That's all from other Pinners naturally sharing my stuff.

Stop thinking about how you can abuse Pinterest for traffic, and instead focus on getting others to share it naturally.

So, few questions especially to the people who get traffic from Pinterest:

    - How do you get the initial followers? By following others?
    - Is it possible to get something going viral without having followers? If so, how does that happen?

I have dabbled a bit on Pinterest myself so I know what it is about, but haven't used it for traffic generation so far.

Any advice that actually work (= you have used it successfully) is appreciated.

      1. You can get followers in a variety of ways. Here are some:

      a) Follow them or their boards - I recommend just following individual boards that interest you otherwise your feed gets filled with junk you don't care about. When you follow someone - or their board - they get a notification with a clickable link to follow you back.

      b) Repin or like their pins. Again they will be notified with a clickable link to your name.

      c) Categorize their boards. Lots of users don;t assign their boards to a category. You can do this for them and they will be notified - again with a clickable link to your name.

      2. Yes you can.

It used to be that every Pin you published would go onto the "Everything" page and it would be exposed to a lot of people. Nowadays only a few Pins get published to that page - but when it is you can still go viral.

      Hope this helps,
      James

Pending on what you want to use Pinterest for determines if you get traffic and make money.

If you are promoting a IM products it's not going to work well for you. If you are promoting physical products geared towards women (68% of users are women) you can do ok, but it all comes down to how many people are following you. Spamming public boards and spamming comments won't get great results.

You need a large following so your pins get repinned naturally.

One of the hangups is that alot of people don't know that if you click a picture it will go to a website, so all the more reason you need alot of followers.

As far as affiliate links Pinterest will strip them out so you need your picture pointing to a review site or an Amazon site that you create in your associates account. This is not against terma of service of either site because you are following pinterests rules and you are creating a site and directing people to it so you are not violating Amazons TOS (but don't take my word for it, always double check and do your own due dilligence, TOS' change all the time.

You can get good traffic you just need the numbers. Is there huge money to be made? NAH. Is there decent money to be made? Yes.

I signed up with pinterest a few days ago

The site was full of pictures and it seems that followers were needed in order to get any traffic; which is time consuming

Later that day I got a promotional email from pinterest and still did not know how to go about creating boards or the point of it

All of the above turned me off so I clicked the unsubscribe / delete my account at the bottom of the email

I like Pinterest, I am building up a nice follower base within only a week. I am not spamming or anything to do with a bot, they are all natural. I have many pictures I have taken myself. The pictures I think are really good, so I think that's why people are into my boards.

I have not yet started putting products on my page.(I want to build up a good trusting relationship first). Although when I first signed up, I put a nice picture of a product I am selling linked to my webpage. I was just testing it out to see how it works. I then deleted the pin right away.

Now the weird part, its been about a week since I deleted that pin. The last two days I have seen traffic from Pinterest and even a sale! So I guess somehow it got lost in the cyber world of pins and came back? I dunno? anyone else experience that?

Someone might have repinned it before you deleted it. Not sure if all repins are deleted when you delete the original.

Well, I thought that also(should have said this in last post). I know it didn't get repinned. It never told me it was repinned, I also had 0 followers, I seriously had the pin up for 1-2min tops. Maybe a glitch I dunno?

The initial verdict on pinterest is that it is a great source of revenue for mommy bloggers and related affiliates. Men are not their primary audience, and women that are their primary audience, are more interested in wedding/cooking/clothing/accessories/interior decor

Ugh...I knew it would be a matter of time before the IM world would sully Pinterest.

LOL at the people on here talking trash about something that they obviously don't understand/can't comprehend. It's not rocket science, it's just people sharing quality content with each other.

The key thing here is quality...no one is going to re-pin your junk.

You must have put a lot of effort on your Printerest account to get so many traffic that beats Facebooks and Youtubes'! Do you have a gallery site or your are selling photos or anything similar? If so yes, Printerest can be very helpful, if not, could you share your strategic?

  • I get 10-50 views a day on my blog from Pinterest. It's not a lot but if the network grows I expect the traffic will too. I just post a ton of stuff, repin every photo from my site, create various boards on different topics, and repin photos that I like. Pinerly is also a good way to automate / track it.

So far, I have gained some traffic through it but I'm still yet to find out what more it can give to my blog. Although I have to admit I enjoy looking at different pins and re-pinning them. I just received an invitation and joined. What's strange about it to me is that I'm suddenly following hundreds of people who I don't know. Unlike Twitter, the system apparently assigns you people to follow, based on some extremely broad criteria -e.g. interests such as "Art," "Travel," "Design," etc. We'll just have to see what happens with it. It looks like it's still very much a work in progress.

One of my initial thoughts about this network is that they need to create more specific categories. For example, they have film, music and books all together. They should really have dozens of categories within each of these.

Another, even more important factor is that if they don't do some kind of quality control the whole site is going to end up being 90% low quality affiliate links. Under the above mentioned category, for instance, I saw dozens of "download free movie" type links. This may seem like an opportunity to affiliate marketers, but if millions of people are doing it, your link won't stand a chance.

At first I started going through all my Big G analytics and started copying files etc....then I was like....nahhhhh. I'm doing a range of 4k-20K uv's daily on several sites.

I'm not going to hand off info for free to someone else so they can make money. Just typing this right now is wasting my time.

I had this same argument last year when I stated I was pulling in 2,000 UV's per day to MyCheapJobs from twitter alone which was skyrocketing my SERPS and people didn't believe me. Of course I posted it and that was the end of that discussion.

I would rather people be skeptical about Pinterest traffic as that gives me and a select few believers free run of the place

Quality is definitely the name of the game. Lately Pinterest has been having problems with users getting hacked so they are watching for spammers closely.

I created a subdomain for a new niche and a few days later, I created a board on pinterest using the keywords of my niche and pinning the articles of the new niche. 2 days after that, my board was on page 3 of google for that keyword (4000 monthly search). It stayed there 3 days, then vanished!

The thing about Pinterest that people often don't get is that it's very different from the other social networks. It isn't like Twitter and it isn't like Facebook.

Not every site will benefit from being promoted on Pinterest but if you have strong, intriguing imagery - especially if your product images fit that description - then you can do very well.

And contrary to what many marketers think, Pinterest users really buy stuff. I blogged about it here:

    http://www.geniusstartup.com/pintere...version-rates/

In a nutshell, 32% of online buyers bought a product because they'd seen it on Pinterest or another social image site. That link also lists a few sites that are similar to Pinterest for anyone thinking of expanding their empire :-)

There's an old saying in the Social Media community..."When the marketers move in, the members move out."

Let's really examine who is using Pinterest and what are they using it for. Okay...mostly women are using it. And when they are on there, they're not really interested in shopping for marketing type of products. They are looking at stuff they genuinely enjoy.

For example, my wife goes on there and she'll look at recipe's or crafts or fashion stuff. She's not there to "buy" or be "sold". She's there for free, useful information. And the key thing is...she doesn't WANT to be sold. She doesn't WANT to see your dang squeeze page and she doesn't WANT your dang product.

I see the same trend with college age girls. They are there to pick up fashion tips and get fun ideas. They could care less about your squeeze page or your free offer.

      So let's see...Pinterest...Hmmm....

Let's go hang out in a community that has NO interest in buying anything, no interest in subscribing to anything and completely frowns upon any offer thrown at them.

Sounds like a hostile environment to me. I think I'll pass.

      Pinterest? Nah.

I'll stick with good old fashioned direct response marketing. It's a tried and true program that I generate WARM leads with every day. That works. Pinterest...forget about it.

      Happy marketing.

        Hi Shane

I don't agree with this. The power in Pinterest is not in getting people directly to products, to squeeze pages or product offers.

It is getting users to your content.

I have some blog posts that have been pinned nearly 5,000 times which has sent tens of thousands of readers to those blog posts.

On those pages I have Adsense, I have Amazon product links and I have promotions for other affiliate products - and people DO buy and they DO click on ads.

I also have email subscription forms, I have links to like my page on Facebook and follow me on Twitter. People join my email list, like me on Facebook and follow me on Twitter and THAT'S when you can sell to people - or just continue to send them back to your content.

I recently tested the waters myself with Pinterest by getting an account and I'll just share my thoughts about it.

I didn't go in whole hog just made a few boards and put my info into the profile part.

I basically wanted to see if I could drive traffic to my site with this somehow. Here's what I did:

I pinned a pic from a blogpost of mine so that it links back to the article. I always include a pic in my blogs for SEO purpose so this was no big thing but I spent a lil xtra time to make the image what I cal Pin friendly. I picked an image I thougt women would like since pinterest is mostly women. I added a caption to the photo that related to my post and also purposed a question so that if you wanted to know the answer you would have to click it.

The Pin got 22 repins and I got 8 visits to my site according to goog analytics. 8 for 22 those stats seemed pretty impressive to me enough to delve into the Pin more at least. Especially when you consider that since I add images to my posts already its only a lil xtra work to make it Pin friendly and get free exposure.

Anyway hope that helps with your decision to try it out.

I think you're taking it the wrong way here...

Squeeze pages? Lol. Yeah sure, regardless of the media, if you present the wrong offer to the wrong public... It'll never work! Actually I've sold a set of affiliate marketing guides there once but it was a fluke.

You need offers that the audience on Pinterest can be interested in. I don't know, shoes, bags... Clothes. Trying to sell them directly may not be the best strategy either. A fashion blog for example with news and reviews plus some Amazon products would certainly do well. Build your following, build your reputation, then start selling. And don't forget to provide value. Like in any business anyway, that's Marketing 101... Pinterest doesn't change that, on the contrary.

I have done thousands of repin jobs. I do about 50 per day. A good example of how pins land on first page big G (and 1 I just did 6 days ago) is keyword phrase:

You will see my pins at #7 and #8

Pinterest is TREMENDOUS for low competition LOCAL SEO. I have dozens of contracts with SEO providers that do local SEO. They literally send me hundreds of sites to do for them. I can get the pins on first page usually within days.

since pinterest is attracting more and more buzz, I do think that for any company or personal website, it is a good place to build brand credibility, authority and presence. Anything that is socially active does have its advantages as correlated with the ever powerful search.

Pinterest allowed us to exploit the growing trend of using images for marketing. So far I see the market is more specific especially targeting mostly moms yet I can see it becoming beneficial for various products and services in the future.

Google is big on social signals. Pinterest is one of them. Remember it's not just about promoting stuff on Pinterest like affiliate links, photo's etc but you should also have a social button which includes it on your site

IMO Pinterest is still too new to have any effect whatsoever n SEO. I think it is interesting but do not think people have made a decent amount of money using pinterest (talking $xxxx).
    But, what do I know.
