I'd think it depends on how much you need done. If it is a relatively small amount, you might be able to get it done on fiverr.com,elance.com or something similar, but if it is a lot, you might want to get a virtual assistant. Both quality and quantity of work have an impact on how much you should pay. It's similar to buying articles, the price can vary wildly based on what you're looking for.

Thanks Jim, we are talking 1-2 hours work each day, I am just stuck at the prices part in all honesty. I understand that "Both quality and quantity of work" is always important. But in this case, it's just copy and paste so I need a rough idea on what is an acceptable payment to these guys.

      This is not necessarily true.

For some of my repetitive task I have an outsourcer in Vietnam who works for around 2.50 an hour. She is great and does the job right every-time. Training i will admit was troublesome due to the language barrier.

A copy and paste job sounds like something you would see on MTurk - head over there and see if there are any comparable tasks and what they are paying.

    My best idea ,
would be to take a look at the freelancers.com.

There is a payment style that goes by the hour.
You can swing by and take a look at it.

    If I am not mistaken,
it is about $3-$5 for an hours work.
You can cut the price down too if you find it too much.

If I were you I would look for a reputable firm. That way, they will do a good job and any amendments etc, will usually be done free of charge.

    In my opinion,
Odesk(.)com and freelancer(.)com is the best platform for freelancing.
if you want to earn money by freelancing then you should go odesk
you can find much more job which is matched with your skills and the payment is good.

    Lee,

If it is simple work that anybody can do with a little understanding of English I would hire a VA for like $75 a week to work part time. That would give you roughly 20 hours and they are good for some very easy work. You can find a few good ones in the WF for hire section.

I use a VA and pay her roughly $15 per hour - sometimes less and sometimes more - depending on the job. I actually found her through a friend and she has worked out perfect for me. I know some people find some good VAs on Odesk but you have to be careful who you hire on there.

Lee, sometimes you just need to try out few assistants and see quality of their work.
    I think you can hire a V.A for about $1 - $3 per hour.

Or you can post on the freelance site for a small project like $30 and ask them to do what you want and see if you like their work. If not, you can always find another one.

It is really the process of hiring the right person.

      Hi Lee

You'd be surprised at how much outsourcers can get wrong: when you test a few out you will find out what I mean. Also, you need reliability and consistancy. So those are the things to look for.

Sources: I generally use vworker these days for my outsourcing needs, but frequently hear good things about odesk and freelancer dot com. They might not be the cheapest and good places though. Try Craiglist.

In terms of cost, I was paying $10 to $15 a day last year for full time. I think $10 was too cheap. I would be thinking of maybe $15-20 for the sort of work you describe. For part time they'd need a little more.

I know other people pay a lot more but I don't think it's necessary. Rather, give regular bonuses.

I also gave good benefits such as paid holidays and, because I was employing in the Philippines, I also gave the "13th month" (an extra month's pay at Christmas), which is usual there. And in addition I also decided to pay a one-month bonus in the summer too. You can find Filipino staff on Craiglist Manila.

Just jump in and try some people out.

      Good luck

I do agree with malcsimm. Just go out there and try some VA's out for $3-$5 hour. I highly recommend odesk.com just beware since there are some that just applies for a job but doesn't really have enough time to do the tasks you want because they are already hired as a VA by other employers.

tchavez - if employing a Filipino full time, I think they would pretty much expect to get the 13th month. John Jonas recommends this too :-)

I like to reward my staff more than the bare minimum wherever they are based.

Here's how offshore labor rates should be calculated:

    • Compare the purchasing power of local money in your country, against the purchasing power of the forex value of your money in the country where your would-be employees are based. For instance:

=>> An entry level nurse in Texas is paid 5000 USD per month, for 8 hours/day, 5 days/week, 4 weeks/month...

=>> An entry level nurse here in Manila is paid Php15000/month, for the same billable work hours. That's around 400 USD/month...

=>> 5000 USD's forex value in Manila is Php200000. So:

    • Does this mean a nurse has purchasing power, in Texas, worth the purchasing power of Php200000, in Manila? No. Why?

The purchasing power of that nurse in Texas, who earns 5000 USD, is around Php50000 here in Manila. This means that a nurse in Texas can buy things, in Texas, worth Php50000 in Manila. This also means a nurse's standard of living in Texas is three times higher than a nurse's standard of living in Manila, because a nurse here is paid three times lower than how a nurse in Texas is paid. That's most likely the reason why such countries are called "third world" countries = Because the standard of living is three times lower than its "first world" counterparts. What can you do about this info?

    • Say someone in your country with work experience, relevant to what you need, is paid 12 USD per hour. If you outsource to a third world country, you'll be paying a fair price at 4 USD per hour. This is because 12 USD can purchase the same things, in your country, as what 4 USD can buy in that third world country. However, someone who is paid, in your country, 12 USD per hour, could most likely be employed with benefits and insurance. Factor this in, and you'll most likely need to add 1 USD per hour to their standard 4 USD/hour rate, since you're not offering benefits and insurance. Now, I believe that's playing it fair...

Thanks for a useful guide, Marx, actually from the Philippines :-) It is hard to know how to be fair: but this sounds like a good basis. I am sure you are right.

      However, there's one point I don't get.

So 5,000 USD is equivalent to php 200,000 in Manila at forex value.

But if you have 5,000 USD you cannot buy 200,000 worth of stuff in Manila, but only php50,000 worth - a quarter of the amount.

Then 50,000 / 1,500 = approx 3, which is how you do your calculation.

My question is: how do you know the cost of living in Manila is one third that of the US? Are there figures somewhere for this?

This would enable useful calulations for other outsourcing countries.

      Cheers

Hi. I'm talking about actual purchasing power in the country where the person spends the money. This means:

=>> Say nurse A is in Texas, and nurse B is in Manila. Nurse A is paid $5000/month, while nurse B is paid $400/month, for the same specialized expertise and the same amount of work. This means:

        • Nurse A can buy things in Texas worth $5000, and the same things in Manila is worth $1200, or Php50000 in its forex value...

        • Nurse B can buy things in Manila worth $400, and the same things in Texas is worth $1600...

Primarily based on the experience of my friends who have been living and working in Texas, California and Canada, for at least 10 years now. Then, check out minimum wages and professional wages in the US, Canada and Manila. Next, check out average daily household living expenses in the US, Canada and Manila...

          Thanks for the further explanation.

That reminds me of the "Big Mac Index" of the UK's "Enonomist" journal. They quote this regularly, and it aims to give a feel for the relative cost of a Big Mac in various countries as an indication of purchasing power there.

I have extensive experience spending thousands of dollars on outsourcing from a plethora of countries. The post I am about to make is worth money because I am telling you what you will never learn unless you find out on your own.

First off, the best outsourcing system in my opinion hands down is odesk.com. The rates are the lowest, the tracking system is best, the number of workers is highest, and the UI and quality of the site is highest out of the sites I have used.

Now, regarding choosing your contractors. You need to be very damn sure the person you hire can do the work you want. I have hired numerous people who do a horrible job, or don't do the job, or disappear, or lie about their capabilities and get some money from the deal (and probably do it over and over again). Just make sure the person you hire has extremely good past reviews, a high amount of time worked, and that you can see his sample work, otherwise i guarantee you that you will get scammed and ripped of.

Next off, look to the Philippines or Bangladesh, not India. Indian workers are becoming extremely expensive and well trained. In the Phillips and Bangladesh, the workers know English well, and in a lot of cases have tons of experience and education including Master's degrees.

When I was working with the Philippines I was told that the equivalent minimum wage there in US dollars was about $1.15. You can get really cheap workers over there. However, remember you get what you pay for and there is no way around this.

Hopefully I have given you some food for thought and really helped you out in this process.

$1.15 here in Manila will buy the same things you can buy in the US for $5. Who's paid $5/hour in the US?

Well, McDonald's pays $5 to $7/hour for general tasks. Here in Manila, McDonald's pays $1.15/hour for general tasks. However:

Most who work for $1.15/hour here in Manila can't be expected to be capable of establishing a good reputation as a friendly, expert resource of useful info and advice in a Manila Web forum about science and technology, or health and fitness, or Information and Communications Technology, or SEO, or IM, or business and finance, or or or, even in their native language...

According to my friends and relatives who have been living and working in the US for at least 10 years now: Most who work for $5 to $7/hour in the US can't be expected to be capable of establishing a good reputation as a friendly, expert resource of useful info and advice in a US Web forum about science and technology, or health and fitness, or Information and Communications Technology, or SEO, or IM, or business and finance, or or or, even in their native language...

For those who can be expected to provide "decent" to "good" results: They'd find other jobs that can pay them more than $1.15/hour (here in Manila) or $5 to $7/hour (in the US). For instance:

This person here in Manila would rather be a customer support agent, so he or she can be paid $2.50/hour with benefits and insurance, and $2.50 will buy here in Manila the same things $10 can buy in the US...

I think odesk.com is a great place to advertise the kind of work you are talking about. They have a hourly feature, and you can also monitor the freelancer's work to make sure that they are not cheating you in any way.

Look at the freelancer's hourly rate and pay them accordingly. You can find data entry freelancers who work for as low as $2 per hour.

i think i´d pay between 8-10 dollars for an hour of work daily. this is worth for the person and worth for you - depending where they are. e.g. if i work here for that price (in germany) i can't even buy a lunch while in other countries that is what you get for a whole day of work.

copy and paste type data-entry typically pays about 20 cents an hour on oDesk. You'll find some who will do it for a lot less than that, just to get some positive feedback. I always use fixed-price gigs, which you can do even though the minimum is $5, define the $5 for a certain amount of work, then say you'll break the work into smaller sections, and define the pay for each section, then you can pay for what is done, even if it is less than a dollar, with no problems. If asked, you can always say you weren't sure how big the project was going to be, when you created the gig.

    That's my experience

You don't want to pay any more than $3 per hour for this kind of work. If possible, break it down by task and pay per task completed (ex. $0.15 for each row completed) so you are not incentivizing slow work.

Hire someone from odesk or freelancer. The charge should be maximum $5.

Wow. So many posts. So many answers.

If it's that simple surely you have either a wife, son, daughter, niece, nephew, mother, etc. Why not show them what to do and simply keep the money in the family.

I have outsourced a lot of fairly simple data-entry type work through oDesk, and typically pay 20 cents per hour, or sometimes less. You're not going to find exceptionally reliable, intelligent workers at that rate, but you'll certainly find some who will get the job done, if you communicate it clearly.

Elance and vworker are best for getting cheap outsourcers. But if you want to get copy paste work then I think mturk or microworkers is good too.
