How do you do customer research when launching new product or service?

How do you find out what people want?
Where do you look to get customer niches?
Do you do surveys? Consumer polls?

Would be interested in how you find out if there is a good market for something?

I personally take a look in forums for my niche and see what people are asking, what questions they want the answers too. Would be interested what others are doing?

One of the more reliable ways is to find out what people are ALREADY buying. You can do this two ways:

    1. Go to marketplaces like Amazon or Clickbank or whatever and see what products are the top sellers in various categories.

    2. If you already have a sense of what niche you want to explore, then you can also see where marketers are putting their money (media buys, AdWords, classified ads in offline publications, radio, etc). Because generally, marketers don't pour money over time into advertising a product if they're not getting a return. And if you see several marketers selling similar products, it might be an indication that it's a profitable market.

p.s. You can do the above in conjunction with other methods, like using keyword tools or even surveying the market. Remember, however, that what people SAY and what they DO may end up being two different things. So it's better to look at what they're already doing (i.e., what they're already buying). Then just create something a little better and get it in front of them.

Great tip about checking Amazon and Clickbank. Amazon is a great place to research especially in the magazine section so you can see which niches are popular.

I like your tip about getting a better product in front of them I am all about improving current products and offering more customer value

Looking at forum is also good but I think you need to select which product you need to promote.. if you want to know the market and learn how the market is big than go to Google keyword tool and type main broad keyword, for example make money online market, so if I go to Google keyword tool and type Make Money Online, I will see millions of search every month so there is a big market.. so this is how you need to learn how to research the market..I hope this helps..

I give beta copies to my internet marketing friends and my affiliates and open it up to part of my list. I let them test it and give me feedback and I tweak it from there.
