5th May Update: Weebly responded well and restored my site. No issues now.
Last December, I was into making a squeeze page. I tried my hand at Weebly.com, and was using their free service. I thought I'd start paying when I start spreading the links to that squeeze page. However, that project never completed, and I moved on to other things.

Last week, I thought of redesigning that page and using it as well. To my surprise, Weebly won't let me log-in. I had worked quite hard on making that page, and I thought it would convert well after a few changes. But weebly just wasn't interested. It kept saying "wrong username/password". I thought I might be entering the password wrong so I requested to reset it. When I entered my email, it said "We do not have the email address you specified on record." I contacted their support, and they replied saying they accidentally deactivated my page/account because it was considered spam. However, she also mentioned that she has gone through the page and the deactivation seems to have been a mistake as the page was fine. I responded to her asking when will I be able to use my account again, and I never heard from them again.

There are many newbies - and even veterans - who might be using Weebly for its easy to make websites features, but this incident should be a lesson for all of us. I trusted them and lost a very beautifully designed squeeze page. I was lucky that it was just a page and not an entire website.

If any of you are planning to use Weebly, you better think twice.

I do know some alternatives though, but can't comment on their usage and reliability because I never used them. Other sites that let you make monetizing sites for free are Webs, Moonfruit, Yola, Blinkweb, Lifeyo, Homestead (30 day trial, $4.99/month after that), and Wix (flash sites). Some of these sites don't let you link an existing domain to their pages, so you need to buy domain(s) from them as well.

EDIT: As Alexa pointed out below, I wouldn't recommend buying domain from the host either. It is an open invitation for chaos. I'm not sure which ones among the ones I mentioned above do not permit linking to an existing domain.

    they cut me off also.
I had 3 sites running and suddenly I was kicked out witout warning and eventhough none of my sites had anything to do with IM that was the reason they gave me.
thankfully I wasn't paying them as I would have been badly burned by losing a service I was paying for.

The irony of it! Does it not occur to you that that might have been the cause of the problem, Michael?

If you're going to use Weebly's free service, perhaps, you'd better think twice. They're actually an excellent host, with the paid upgrade.

To be fair, the incident you describe above is no worse than could happen at any other free host, with or without a reason being given, and in the event Weebly were more willing to discuss it with you than most services would be, and even to admit that they may have made a mistake, which actually speaks rather well of them, by comparison with other free hosts!

I have sites which are now in their fourth year of hosting there, and I'm really pleased and impressed with Weebly. (I'm not using their free service).

Well ... I thought Homestead was only a 2-week free trial, or something? I haven't looked, since it changed hands, I think ...

You should never buy domains from them as well.

Registering the domain-name through the host is a real blunder. Registration and hosting should always be in two separate places. It's far better to register the domain elsewhere. And if that isn't allowed/possible, then don't use that host.

Yes, I do realize that the free service is not their priority, yet they shouldn't treat the users like that. As a result of it, you're losing potential customers. And there's no guarantee that this isn't happening with paid customers either. Especially when they make you pay for minimum 6 months in advance. I know their prices are very reasonable, but do you think I'll even consider them ever again?

You're right, I just checked. They offer a trial period of 30 days and $4.99/month after that. My bad.

Woa. I currently have one page on weebly so far so good. However, I have no intentions on doing much more on it and it took nothing more than 5 min to make it all. Since I use it for different things than a squeeze page.

    wow...I never use it.
But I guess, building HTML or wordpress squeeze page is safe enough. We can purchase the PLR and modify it. For free version, squidoo is cool enough

Just FYI, once you get into Homestead, it's really hard to get out. Their website builder makes it so that once your articles are in place, the only way to transfer to another webhost is by hand. There is no easy transfer like there would be on a wordpress-based site.

Other sites may be like this too- I just know this personally about homestead

I've been using Weebly for my site and it seems ok so far. However after reading some of the stories on here I think I'd be better off creating my own site from scratch.

      Thanks for sharing.

If you want free use WordPress or Blogger - or better yet pay the minimal cost of having your own hosting through HostGator. It really doesn't cost that much and they are great.

Kids don't have credit cards, and Weebly can be a very useful tool for us IMers. I am not saying it is the ONLY thing to do, but just like anything else it does have it's place. I will tell you one thing with the weebly sites I own though is that I never feel like it's a pain-in-the-arse to update them. Weebly has the easiest updating system for blogs I have ever worked with.

They also include awesome contact pages, photo galleries, comment forms, and social media icons for spreading your blog posts. Anyway, it's NOT the best - nothing is really when you think about it - but it is certainly something all marketers should consider.

Here is some further research for you to help you understand how it is not really just for kids >

Weebly is really the best source. I also stored my site in Weebly. This one is exotically one of solid featured source. This one is one of most exceptional source over the web.

You are not going to believe it but I had the same experience with Weebly.

They destroyed my website because they thought that I have violated some of their terms.
When I asked them to explain me, they finally accepted that it was done by mistake and they recreated my log in account. fortunately I have already migrated to WP.

    Never again this mistake!

I would suggest to avoid building your business model based on another business. It is always a great recipe for failure in my opinion.

I chimed in here cause I have used weebly for a long time and was really annoyed when I got shut out.
I know free accounts always come with underlying pitfalls in the long run, I use blogger for years and its great the only problem there is that ol' chestnut "traffic"
I own a few domains and want to build on them so if anyone can help feel free to contact me.
