Which would be better?

XYZchicago.com or xyzcity.com/chicago?

Where XYZ is the phrase I'm targeting with multiple cities. I'm debating whether to make one large site and SEO each city as I do them and SEO the whole site, or buy each domain separately and seo that way.

Thanks,
Steve

I believe these days you should just use one domain, and try to make it an authority site. However, if you want a quick rank, getting XYZchicago may be better.

I would go with an authority site for sure. It will save you a lot of time & will be much better in Google eyes

one huge site is better....but it again all depends on what xyz is? How the competition? Will you have enough unique content to build out 100 microsites?

If you're making a bunch of similar sites that will cover the same type of content 9just with different cities) why wouldn't you want it all easily accessible and under one "roof" so to speak?

  • Hi Steve, that depends on what you want to do, because the XYZChicago.com has more authority, but in case you want to repeat process more times, buy a good domain and insert each city as a new folder. In that way you will save a lot of dollars.

    See you soon,

    Steve -

I would go with an authority site so to answer your question choose this: xyzcity.com/chicago.

If you decide to add more cities to your website, it's just as easy as creating another page. If you go the other route "xyzchicago.com" it wouldn't sound right (IMO) if you were to talk about another city other than Chicago (xyzchicago.com/phoenix).

Just my .02 - authority sites are the way to go - don't limit yourself to Chicago branding if you plan on talking about more than just Chicago.

Buying the city domain name would get expensive as you continue to rank for individual cities. But i would test both for a few months to see which one makes you the most money.

I was planning on doing this for multiple cities. I was leaning toward an authority site but it is easier to rank a mini niche one and sell it off on flippa for a hundred dollars or so...
