A friend has emailed me asking for help with an Excel/pdf problem. I tried the obvious of adding a hyperlink to a cell then converting to pdf, but it doesn't retain the link. Any ideas anyone?

This is his email:

I have created some PDF files of my various branches from my family history database. The "database" is in Excel workbooks but I have written a VB programme which reads the CSV files and converts them to Access, then does various other things including creating the PDF files.

What I wanted to do was create an index to the people listed and be able to directly link from the index to the place on the pdf file. Linking to the appropriate file is no problem, nor is getting the pdf to open on the right page, but opening it in the right place is more tricky - unlike in HTML where it's easy to use the named anchor (as in my original post).

I've read on the web about the PDF Open Parameters but they don't seem to work reliably.

    Carol,

If you type the full address in e.g. www.yourwebsite.com it will be clickable so long as it is in the body of the pdf. Some pdf converters will not convert hyperlinked text like "My Website" into a clickable link.

    See if that helps.

Thanks Diana, but the issue is linking within the document, not to a web address. At least, I think that's what he's saying!

it is unclear if you need to create that link in excel or the pdf, but if your working in excel / saving it as a pdf then when creating the link in excel

    > insert hyper link > ( tab on left ) place in this document > select the cell reference ( ex a 27 ) > select the page

then save that excel file > convert to pdf / not tested ?

/ what you would do is offset the selected cell a few to give a better alignment / experiment with this

Thanks tryinhere, but as I said in the op, I've tried creating a hyperlink to a cell and it wasn't retained when I converted to a pdf.
