Quick Duplicate Content Question

Hey guys,

I just have a quick question regarding duplicate content.

Say you were selling a product that there were lots of different varieties of and you had a page with pictures of the products and small snippets under each with a (..read more) link which would take them to an individual page about the product selected.

My question is, if you have this (..read more) link under each product on many pages will Google see this as duplicate content and penalize your site?

  • No as long as there is about a 10 or 20% difference of 2 webpages on your site are different you shouldn't have a problem with a duplicate content penalty so different sites will not be penalized by Google
  • I don't believe this should pose a problem. I think the duplicate content penalty would apply if you have content (such as an article) on more than one page of your site.

I'm not an expert on that, just my thoughts
  • Exactly right, Tess,

The individual pages linking to the full description page will probably be different enough to qualify for indexing and the fact that they all link to the same page is not relevant since pages are indexed and spidered individually.
  • In a word, no. However, there are those who'll try to scare you into buying their SEO services with stuff like this.
  • No it won't be duplicate content. As long as you have unique content in the meta tags there's no risk with something like this.
