Have you been asked to quit?

We all know that IM can take a lot of time if you let it.

Has anyone ever asked you to quit? A spouse, friend, parent, etc.?

My wife totally support my effort to get this IM business right. We are both doing freelancing on the net and when, luckily, a client didnt paid us their due for a measly 15 dollars for three articles, I said why not use instead my own 15 dollars to build a site as a form of revenge. Planned to use their articles but online ethics prevented us from doing it. So what I did was do the site from scratch and all the postings. The only reminder that I usually get from her is go slowly with it since money really is hard to come when you are starting.

Initially when i started back in 2009, Yes! It was very discouraging especially from people close to you.

The thing about IM, is that everyone thinks you're doing some sort of scam to make money, or that you don't have a proper focus in life. And if you did make money, they think its probably a few dollars selling stuff on ebay

I generally don't tell many people I make money online. If I had to explain to them, I just tell them i get paid building websites.

There are 2 main reasons for someone wanting you to stop:

1 - They're jealous and don't want you to succeed.

2 - They think you're going to fail.

Either way - unless it's your wife and she's going to leave you if you don't choose her over yourself/your business then it's irrelevant.

Mind you - if people close to you think you're going to fail - you might want to consider whether you've given them reason to have that mindset.

And IMHO, Reason #1 hurts far worse than Reason #2.

  • Well not really.

But I DID have A LOT of doubters and a lot of 'is this really gonna work?' type of lines fired at me a lot until the day I made my first sale a while back. Now they say nothing.

To be honest, as cold as it sounds, I REMOVE the things in my life that hold me back. Even some people. Plain and simple. I know it's hard for some, especially if they were people who are close. But sometimes, the people we want with us aren't exactly the people who are best for us.

That's just one strategy. You only need to do this if you don't have a robust way to keep yourself on track and not be affected by people's negative comments. I don't have any people around me that would tell me to not do IM but if I did their comments would go in one ear and out the other as they would be just a reflection of their thinking and nothing to do with me or my plans and possibilities.

People only have the impact you let them - so yes, if you let people get to you, you're probably better off getting away from them.

When I was still in college my parents would often tell me to stop and focus on studies.

I persevered and never gave up, finished college as well, and am doing well in IM.

I think this is one the biggest reasons why most people fail. We are surrounded all the
time with people who will tell you you can't do this or that, or that you shouldn't do it.
It is so easy to fall into trap and start doubting yourself, eventually quitting and falling
    into the unsuccessful majority.

    Interesting thread!

I can remember my family - when I told them what I was going to do they didn't think it would be a good idea.

They told me to get a "proper" job - of course with the current events now it looks like there are not that many "proper" jobs left.

Having set up LTD I now provide the "proper" jobs.

But think all in all very supportive through the hard times as well.

Never got so low where they had to ask me to stop.

I have never had a venture that I was successful at where people didn't ask me to quit or tell me I was stupid for doing it. When I had my retail store, which was doing 6 figures a year in sales, I had people always coming up to me and asking me why I didn't get a real job instead of working in a mall all day. I just looked at them and smiled and then sold them something.

With my article writing, it's the same way. People don't believe that you can make money by writing web content. I play WoW in my spare time, and a lot of my WoW buddies ask me how to make extra cash so they can pay for next month's game card...so I tell them about vWorker or Fiverr or even about my own site. 10% of them want to know more, so I'll talk to them through Yahoo IM and explain how it works and I'll even help them setup accounts and all.

And I've yet to have even 1 person who gets that far keep at it past Day 1. Every single one of them comes back and accuses me of scamming them. Apparently I own vWorker, Paypal, and Fiverr, and I just scam people online all day. ROFLMAO!!!

So I just load up my account and laugh because that's one less person I have to compete with.

luckily I started IM in my late 30s so the only person that I yad to convince was my wife. But she is used to my scheming and gave me her full support. I often come home from work and disappear into the office for a few hours and she is cool with that. As long as I know that I have her full support then everything is a little bit easier

Same here. Besides my wife, no one really knows what I do on the net so no one get a chance to discourage me. I dont tell my beer buddies what's my online plans since they have no idea what the business is all about. Sometimes it is easy not to try to please and explain to everybody what you are doing. Just show them you can support yourself and that's basically okay with them.

No one has asked me to quit but myself. However, I haven't thrown in the towel yet because I find it so fantastically educational. That could be a problem if you spend too much time learning and not enought time taking action. Everyone has to find a comfortable balance.

When I started my offline seo/web design company lots of people doubted me and discouraged me.Mainly I think it is a new concept to them and they don't really know how it works.

Since i'm only 17, I was looked down on and treated like I was dumb for dropping out of school by all my mate's parents. But they didn't really grasp the concept of IM. I remember one day my mates mum asked how I was paying for the outsourcers to come and live in australia. That made me laugh.

but im laughing now since I earn just as much as them and more. And in coming months predicted to be earning a lot more.

Trying to explain seo to someone who just uses the web for watching youtube videos and facebook is not the easiest thing.

I've had people tell me to quite almost everything that I've done at one point or another.

People said I should stop "chasing my dreams" and get a "real job".
People have told me that I should quit my "real job" to pursue my dreams.
People have said I should get into one field or another.
They've said I should get out of those same fields later on.

The one thing I've learned is that "people" don't know what they're talking about and I refuse to listen to them. The only thing that really quiets the nay sayers is showing them how much money you make doing what you do.

People want you to fail because they were programed all their life to be an employee. When they see you take on the path of financial freedom and hopefully quitting your job, they become jealous.

I have been asked to quit many times by people in my life. I had people laugh at my face.

You just have to do what is in your interest and no one else.

I see it this way, whether you are building an online business or an offline MLM business for example, people will always try to put you down and hope that you fail. If you want to be like them in life then take their advice. If you want to be successful like your mentor then follow their advice.

    It is up to you.

It's my honest belief that there are evolutionary explanations for all this.

Men are hard-wired to try to make more money. In my view, this is also why so many fall victim to gambling addictions. They are fulfilling their urges, just in the wrong way.

Women are hardwired to look for resourcefulness and stability, whether as a wife or as a mother wanting "the best" for her sons. Earning "potential" is OK but up to a point. Yes.
But if this is what you want to do, and you know you're doing it to the best of your ability, and you can see things coming down the road that others cant see because they aren't in your position, then it doesn't matter what anyone else wants.

  • I got asked to quit all the time back in the early days when I was spending 30+ hours a week on the computer and making diddly squat.

Now I do the same thing (except I actually work less) and no one has a problem with it.

Its kind of like the difference between a person with a gambling problem and a person who makes a living from gambling: if you gamble frequently and lose more than you win you have a gambling problem and naturally everyone will want you to quit.

If on the other hand you are one of the select few who gamble frequently and win more than you lose few people will have a problem with your gambling.

I was totally bummed out by quitting. I remember being totally depressed about it and pulling weeds in the rain because I didn't have anything better to do. Quitting didn't last long, probably only a couple of days.

When I first started my girlfriend didn't get it at all; she thought I was just surfing the internet, even though I had explained what I was doing. She now fully supports what I do (thank god).

Try and surround yourself with people that support you, no matter what.

You can spend a lot of your spare time trying to make IM work, so if you have a partner I suppose it's a balancing act.

However, if your partner or friend demand that you pack in totally and it's against your wish, then you have a hard decision to make.
