Need help with Subscriber List

I recently purchased a website and inherited a subscriber list along with it that may be an "unconfirmed list". I would appreciate some suggestions as to the best way to handle this list. I would prefer to have it confirmed but not sure about the best approach. Any suggestions would help.

Re-send the confirmation messages and see if anyone confirms.
If not, delete them from the list.

I would send them the confirmation email with some introduction of a new newsletter series, services.... and just ask them to confirm if they would like to receive my updates

Did you inherit the list alone, like in a CSV file or did you take over someone's email service provider like Aweber?

I've seen this happen before with lists I am on. They sent out a broadcast to that list, telling them that they are moving to a new list, etc. etc. If they are interested in whatever it is you will provide for them in the new list, they will stick around.

Since it's an unconfirmed list, you risk being labeled as spammer if you blast a new message to everybody. I would put a very visible message onsite asking users to confirm their subscription. You may or may not state the change of ownership, if this is an issue for you. The onsite ad won't attract as many subscribers as you have on the list but since most likely a lot of them are dead souls anyway, this might not be a huge loss.
