Can you build a list in ANY niche?

Is a list useful in any niche or only certain ones? Would it be useful to build a list in the fashion niche, say if I owned a website that sold dresses, would it be a good idea to collect my website visitor E-mail?

If a list is so valuable then why don't big companies like Best-Buy and Amazon force you to opt-in when you visit their website? Or do they rely on affiliates to do the list building for them?

All replys to this thread get thanked by me in the morning. Have a good night guys.

Noone really forces anyone to opt-in. Usually customers and interested visitors opt-in trusting that they can opt out at any time and that opting-in is by their choice. Subscribers usually want to be contacted by a company. There is usually something of value the subscriber is looking for, whether it's tips, news, offers, etc...

It is definitely worth testing for just about any niche. The way it is used is also up for testing. Maintaining communication with customers can be invaluable.

Yes, the best is to test if your niche is suitable for creating a list. Personally, I don't think any niche is good for a list. It depends on the solution you are going to provide. Some niches are good to have a list such as stock investment niche.

I own a clothing company, and I have a list of everyone who has bought from me. I could send them an email, offering a discount for being a customer or something. So I think most stores in the "niche" have a list.

I have ordered from other sites, and recieved discount offers and stuff.

So I would say, you could use a list for most things online. As for the method of which you get this list, is the real key. I would definately go about my clothing co different from my IM. But some things will be the same. Using social networks and things like that.

Hope this made sense. I tend to babble sometimes. HeHe

I can't say it is for every niche. My experience is that people opt into my lists on sites that sell my e-books to get newsletters, etc. For my shopping site they opt into the list through teaser ads for free admission to the shop and from other sites they are encouraged to sign up for information.

I agree that you can possibly get people to sign up to your lists on most things if you approach it in the right way.

    Hope this helps

    God bless

If you can offer similar products in the future then you must capture it. Even funeral service are doing it

I had one of my guys hit me up just 2 days ago about this.
He asked me where on his site he should put an opt in box for subscribers.

After I picked myself up off the floor and wiped the tears away I asked him....

Why would anyone subscribe to a yeast infection cure site

He saw the funny side too.

I'm not sure if you are kidding or not.

Definitely build a list, even in this niche.

People get recurring yeast infections and if you have something that can help them then they will buy.

The internet is made up of people.

The more of the right people you communicate with, then the more money you will make. It's as simple as that.

Yes you can build a list in any niche as long as you know what they initially bought you can usually offer more similar offers.

Someone like amazon don't have to rely on a list because of their huge brand. However some big retailers do have lists I regularly get emails from HMV the biggest music shop in the UK as well as some other retailers. So I would definitively build a list for your niche.

I believe that those BIG companies you mentioned build their list - via CPA networks

I think desperate niches may not be as conducive to list building, because people want to get that problem solved right away, and once they have solved that problem by buying your product, you may not have anything left to sell them

There are other niches where, chances are, people are never going to be satisfied, and they will keep buying over and over

I build lists for all my niches. I have also taken down the opt-in on a couple of them, but haven't really seen any change in my sales as a result

Sometimes I do fear the opt-in gives a customer the chance to click off of my page and I won't get them back

      Hi Sree94,

If you know well your audience and apply the follow up smartly then you have possibility to offer new products next time.

Concerning monetization your lists in any niche, you need to keep the interest of your prospects and this way you can make cross selling between them, too.

      Just my 2 cents.

Not all lists are created equal. Some are just more profit generating than others.

Yes, you can create a list in ANY niche, but would you really want to if you don't have multiple or related products to follow up with in the future? Will the people that buy the product want to buy more stuff in the future?

I am an Anatomy and Physiology tutor and thought (at one time) about creating an A&P Made Easy course. The only problem with a list would be that once they are out of the course what could I offer them? A whole lot of nothing is the answer.

Make sure the niche has multiple offers and products before thinking about building a list in it is my general view point.

I don't think you can really force a customer to opt-in to your source list. Typically customers are entering your emailing list with the thought that they can opt out at any time if they don't like the information being provided to them. They are always looking to be contacted by the corporation with some news on things that may benefit them directly like exclusive offers and advice sources. Probably find a profitable niche first with Google trends and test through email communications with your prospective customers. Hope this assists...
