Is IM a hobby/part time or a Real Business to you?

Hey warriors,

I just wanted to get a feeler out there on how many actually treat IM as a real business as opposed to working it on the side, with very little focus, a hobby (that MAY make money)?

How successful is your current online business?

If your anything like me then you would be treating as real business as such it requires investment to build it up quickly and calculated risks, not just sitting on the fence on an idea. Putting it into action and if its not working you know you tested it and quickly change direction until you make it work.

I do this full-time and it is a real business to me. When I first started I didn't know where it was going to go and treated it more like a hobby. It soon became very real to me.

I think the OP limits the options too much.

IM can be a very real business yet still be worked on the side. Just because something is a part time activity, it isn't strictly a hobby nor is it automatically something less than a real business.

At the same time, just because you go at something full time, it isn't necessarily a real business.

It's all a matter of attitude and your approach. So the options might should be:

        For you, is IM

        1. A full time endeavor that you treat as a serious business?

        2. A full time endeavor that you really treat more as a hobby than a business?

        3. A part time activity that you treat as a serious business?

        4. A part time activity that is pretty much along the lines of a hobby, albeit a hobby that may generate some income?

socialmassmedia - thank you for bringing this up because it really is a good question for all of us. We need to make an honest assessment of where we stand so we can have an honest idea of what to expect. We might try to fool ourselves into thinking we approach IM as a business. But if the reality is that we treat it more along the lines of a hobby, then we can't expect to generate "real business results." So, being honest with ourselves, we shouldn't be disappointed when we don't achieve real business results.

        Does that make sense?

        Peace

            Excellent question!

As others mentioned, you can work your IM business part-time and still treat is as a BUSINESS.

Your question touches on one of the fundamental problems of so many Warriors here: they're NOT treating it as a BUSINESS. They're treating it instead as a part-time, "I'll TRY this and see if it works" HOBBY.

And that's a big reason for so much of the frustration and lack of results around here.

IM isn't hard per se, but there IS a steep learning curve. Granted, everyone is on their own journey and learns at their own pace.

But to be successful in anything, you must be COMMITTED. And if you're going to commit to a business, you have to be willing to put in the time and effort -- and yes, money! -- to make it work.

I see such a poverty mentality around here. "I can't afford it." "How can I start a business with no money?" Too many aren't willing to invest in their business. And then they wonder why it's not working.

However, like a lot of people here, I have a full-time day job and work on my business part-time. That's just reality for me. But I AM treating it like a business, not a hobby.

I think you can build a successful business by working on it part-time, as long as you treat it like a business.

When you look at it like a BUSINESS -- and treat it like a business -- you do things differently:

            1. You get serious and focused.

Don't jump from tactic to tactic. Pick a business model, a niche and a target market and then stick with it.

            2. You invest in learning what you need to know.

No one truly is a "self-made man (or woman)". Successful people invest in their own success by buying the courses they need, going to workshops/conferences and hiring mentors/coaches. No, you don't need to do all of these things. Your skill set, personality, strengths, resources and business will all determine what you need.

But it's doubtful you don't need anything.

Too many around here think that Google can give you all of the answers. Yes, there's tons of great information online. But it's like a giant box of jumbled puzzle pieces. The pieces are NOT laid out for you in a step-by-step plan.

That's why I recommend everyone buy at least one good comprehensive course on online marketing. It will save you a LOT of time, money and frustration.

            3. You work at it consistently.

Of course, it helps to have clarity in what we're doing. It's hard to be consistent and have the perseverance necessary to succeed if we're not focused and clear about what business we're really in and the steps we need to take.

Too much attention is paid to how to get to the top of Google or the latest, hottest piece of whizbang software.

Trouble is, those are just TACTICS, not an overall business plan. And Google is fickle. True, Google is extremely important to all of us and we need to rank as high in the search engines as possible.

But there are other ways besides Google to get traffic and customers. Joint ventures is one. Positive media attention (not just online press releases) is another. Speaking to groups of your target customers is another. Etc.

I want to rank as high as possible in Google, but my real goal is to become as independent of Google as possible. I want their algorithm changes to be nothing more than a blip on the radar of my business.

If your entire business can be wiped out with one Google algorithm change, then that's not very smart business.

First, pick a niche, a target market and a business model. (Not enough attention is paid to choosing the right business model. Most people don't even know what their business model is.)

Then start marketing! Selling products or services online happens in the same basic way for everyone, no matter what they're selling:

            Traffic > Opt-in page > Autoresponder series (or e-zine) > Sales page

Focus on building your list and building a relationship with them.

Just doing this will give you a LOT of clarity and specific steps to take every day which is a HUGE leap forward in the direction you want to go.

            Hope that helps!

It was once a hobby but very quickly i realised that with some perseverance i could remove the shackles of the rat race.

After around a year when i saw i could consistently double or triple what my day job was making me whilst i slept - i mean, i had already made my days wage before i got up! - i realised that i had to pursue this.

Regardless if you are offline or online - if you offer a service or a product in exchange for money you have a business. You don't nurture it and give it your full attention it will die.

Even if you treat it like a real business, you can still fail online.

Your ads might not work. Your PPC advertising may suck the "credit card funds" out of you.

You still need to find what works for you and then just do more of it.

Just because you are investing your time and money, if you are not taking the right actions, failure will still appear on your door step.

If you treat it like a hobby it will pay like a hobby.....is what I read somewhere quite a while back. This is no doubt absolutely true. The difficulty is though that when you work full time its hard to provide the time you need to it. I know this is a common problem. It makes having a real plan and a direction a total priority. So far I haven't been able to quit my day job for IM. But I know the day is coming.

I have done it as a hobby for about 3 years. October 2011 I decided to focus on it more and treat it like a legit business. I've since gone from making about $100-300 per month to making $400-700 per week.

I'm nowhere near my goal of doing this full time earning at least $100,000 per year but I'm a lot closer than I was.

It started out as a hobby, but my mind set became entrepeneurial, and I realized that for me at least, I had to do it a a business; albeit a part time one. The "problem" with IM is that I found it's difficult to drop. The optimist in me won't quit.

I still have my day job (which funds online activities), so consider myself as having a "day job" and an "evening business" ...and a very understanding and supportive Wife!

I treat it as a serious full time business. Every morning I wake up, grab some coffee and get to work. I usually work until about 5 at which point I spend time with my wife.

I really enjoy what I do. I love marketing, I feel like it's the perfect outlet for my abilities and interests. I didn't know where it would go when I first started, I just knew I wanted to make money and I was sick of working boring, pointless and aggravating jobs.

I've made money basically since I started up to this day with revenue increasing on a regular basis. I make money doing something I enjoy, according to my own schedule, for people who value and appreciate what I do. It's a job, there can be a lot of work involved at times, but it's the best job I've ever had.

That was one of the gradual understandings that helped me to push my IM endeavors from the realm of dabbling and hobby to a full time business. That it is a business!

I think people - especially those beginning and just looking to "make money online" have no idea what they are getting into and there is a learning curve that can (and should) occur where you not only learn the terms and methods or at least the possibilities, but also, that this is basically a business - not tremendously different than having an offline business - in terms of responsibility, organization, and mindset

Its something the more I do and expose myself to the more I realise I love doing it. A hobby for me is something I do to switch off and clear my head. IM is something which once I have a thought or an idea or even a to do list, it becomes, even though I enjoy it, more than just a hobby.

Definitely just a hobby, I know where my real skills lie and its not internet marketing but sound engineering.

I'm not talented like Sean Tyas or Andy Blueman, but I can make a fairly engaging dance track when I need to.

Or background music, orchestral music like Hans Zimmer, rock, pop, I just love sounds and the emotions they produce. It was what my thesis and college was about was music therapy. Plus most the money I make now is in sales anyway so I don't really feel like I need to become a master at marketing anyway. Definitely love marketing too, but you got to stay somewhat true to what you're experienced at.

Although I am dedicating time and effort to it, I am still only just getting by, for the most part. I hope that with continuous efforts, I will get to the point where I can be completely comfortable with using IM as my only source of income.

That's what I love about IM you can automate a lot of the process, outsource most of the work. You work on creating as many passive income systems as possible so that if you were to go on holiday for 3 months the money will still be rolling in to your bank account. If one systems slows down or fails you have mnay other to fall back on. Now put this into context with a job you have been for many years with a comfortable salary and all of a sudden you get laid off...now no job, no income in a moments notice.

I know where I would like to be in, how about you?

    Thanks for the thread.

Well my IM business is full time but as I enjoy it so much I can't really call it work.

The early months were extremely challenging both mentally and emotionally however once I started making a financial breakthrough the flood gates opened.

Business is good and I have found that a systematic approach to my online activities is the key to success.

WF has also been a great help though I regret only reading threads rather than composing my own.

Thats true if your enjoying what you are doing then its not work however those who are really serious about replacing their jobs or other forms of income with solely an IM business need to treat it as such. Im talking minimum 5 figures per month profit not gross sales or revenue.

Yes there are some people out there who have a very systematic approach and invest and outsource to create these figures every month and still do other things they love be it their current career, favourite pastimes etc but these people are few and far between. Once you know what you want and what your good at you can pretty much outsource a lot of the process which saves you time to think about how to grow your business further, marketing, other business models etc.

When I realised I could earn more than my crappy 9 to 5'er then I was 1) in awe and 2) ready to flip the birdie to the boss.

I actually did go in and tell my boss what I thought of her, but that day was when my hobby finally become my fulltime passion and real business.

I treat this as a real business. Since I am just a newbie and knows that it will take time for me to really go full-time with this, I hop from doing freelancing on the side so I can put the right investment in IM.

For me, there is no turning back with this venture.... I am ready to wait until this works out for me. But while waiting for my plans to materialize, I still have to do some work.

Hi Definitely freelancing will give you the cash injection you could use to inject into creating your own products to resell. Work on creating your own product be that in form of ebook, video training, audios, interviews etc Its shocking how you can quickly you can create your own info products if you know how to use resources around you effectively. If you don't have time but have the money you could outsource most of it but I create the actual content in my products myself the rest is outsourced. If you have more or alot of time on your hands then you can do it yourself or learn certain parts. Start off by creating simple short reports on what you know a lot about or your passion. Then move onto more advanced forms of product creation as you start earning more.

For me, it is a real business that I just so happen to currently do on the side. In fact, I stay 3.5 hours at the office (of my "real" job) just to have a set space to work without distractions. Last week I drafted an official business plan as well as a strategy/timeline for how to get it done.

I have forecasts for exactly how much money I am going to need to spend and when in order for it to get off the ground, and I have a very strict schedule for the things that I need to get done.

So, as I said, it is a very real business to me, although I know of many people that have been rather successful (depending on your definition) that just treat it as a hobby.

      Best,

It is full-time for me. I am a former schoolteacher and the school system where I live is heart-breaking. No discipline measures leave it hard to make a learning environment. I got fed up (even though I love the children) and looked for work online about 4 years ago. I found new software, the internet and the idea of working from your laptop anywhere in the world quite intriguing. I never tire of learning new things, but is focusing on only a couple of things that have brought me the most success. When you realize the IM is like a candy shop for all of us, you learn only to eat a couple of types of candy at a time .

    Kristie from Georgia

P.S. Considering I like to write, I found writing short Kindle books a easy residual income as well. It really does work well if you have something to say of value. Just a note....for those who wonder about Kindle.

If you're like most new Internet marketers, you started your online efforts without giving one thought to building the foundation for your business. You may have blindly selected products and programs to promote and spent many months trying every promotional method you can find in an attempt to generate sales. It's not working like you'd like it to, is it? It won't until you back up and build the foundation.

True, Promote things you have researched properly meaning that there's a very good demand or strong desire for it. First stop is always research get that done right then move onto looking at offers which will be good for your target audience. Once you have found good offers to promote validate that's its selling well already or in hot market full of hungry buyers. If its CPA for instant I would create a unique landing page for that offer and then include and optin to capture leads to follow up. Traffic would be driven from facebook and You tube both free methods. If I want faster results I can use paid media like PPC but there will be quite some testing and tweaking involved to find winning converting campaign.

      Hope that helps people out.

If you are a starter , you might not a good idea to be full time because full time might just stop your finance resource at 1st . You only o with full time when you see something positive which you need more time to done it and it able to return you with big bulk.

This is for sure a full time business for me and there is definitely a difference in the way I run my business as opposed to participating in my hobbies. We have had an offline business for many years and my internet marketing business entails many of the same day to day principles to be successful.

I really like having this forum though for the support and networking it provides. I didn't have that in the offline world. I really enjoy working with other warriors.

I started affiliate marketing in 1999 as a hobby - to earn a little to help pay for the hosting of a website.

After a while I thought it could be something I could make a full time income from - and something that could take me away from my boring 9-5 office job.

In 2001 I decided to go full time, and I've been earning my living from the internet ever since.

2003 and 2004 were my best years, I earned far more then than I had before or since - despite working only a couple of hours a day. In hindsight I wish I'd worked harder and taken advantage of the easy money - but at the time I was enjoying the lifestyle.

It's a lot harder to earn money online now, in my opinion.

Tough question. I think we human beings are made to socialize face to face, in real life but pfft, technology is technology.

To answer your question, the online business goes well, IM is at the moment full-time but eventually (after having multiple baskets and a relatively auto-pilot business) I'll treat IM as a part-time hobby.

Smart by having a team or outsource team you can scale, work on multiple projects.

IM to me is what you make it and only limited by your own belief and thoughts. Having said that so many have not made their first dollar online. That could be for many reasons, info overload, shiny syndrome disorder, procrastination, not taking action, following the mmo push button guru's selling the dream and making main income from that and I can list many others. Do you fall into any of the above or another? How can I help?

Making IM your full time business stream can be sometime a failure. I do it more than PT as learning takes time & applying core marketing principles on your niche cannot provide ultimate results always.

I have seen many fellows who are performing well enough within marketing perspective. So do I follow them relatively, making my knowledge go utilized in real time.

For me it is full time, 14 to 16 hour days, seven days a week. It is most certainly a business, one that usually keeps me away from the WF.

I have learned a lot in eight years. My first project, a massive multimedia project I did entirely on my own, learning everything as I went along, was a major mistake. It took five years to understand we should market what people want, not what they need.

My current business was launched three years ago and progress has been made in good part as a result of excellent advice from more experienced people on this forum. For that I am very grateful.

The hard work is almost over ... and I am grateful for that, too! The recipe, I think, has been absolute doggedness when things were tough, a willingness to make mistakes and to learn from them, sufficient capital to farm out jobs we are unable to excel in ourselves, and absolute faith in the goal.

The key thing is to make your hobby your business. Very few people ever get this.

It's obvious that almost all people here claim to do it full time while very few actually have the income proof to claim it to be their full time business.

It becomes your full time business when you change your thinking.. and changing your perception on online marketing will finally change your attitude, and a change in attitude leads to a change in action.

Here is how you determine whether or not it is YOUR BUSINESS:

Think about how you think about your business, how you treat it, what you do and what you don't do.

Your best bet is to be honest to yourself and only claim things that are actually happening.

It depends on the person if they want IM as a hobby or treat it as a serious business however, Internet marketing is serious business that can give your serious money if you use a method that really works.

One thing though, just like any serious business, IM requires focus, drive and your time.

I think it's what you make it.

When launching a new business, the start is usually the hardest part and the part you need to put the most time into what you are doing.

As you get further, things get easier and you can outsource more and more and sooner or later you get to that point when you can outsource almost all tasks that are necessary for the business to be running properly.
