So what are the top five applications that you absolutely MUST have?

If you were to give a newbie some advice about programs/applications that they just gotta get, what would they be?

When I wrote my list, it interested me to note that all but one of the top five are free.

Skype - Don't know how I managed before I got it
Firefox - Can't understand why I used IE for so many years.
Open Office - I was a late-comer to this party. It's just fantastic and it's not Microsoft
Roboform - What a revelation this wee program is. Must save so much time once it's set up
Thunderbird - Just so much better than Outlook and it's free.

And other must haves for me: (can start to get expensive now!)

SnagIt
Camtasia
Dreamweaver
Photoshop
Fireworks
Premiere

The list can go on and it's dependent upon how you run your business, what you actively get involved in and what you outsource.

So what's your top five? I'm sure I've missed out some obvious ones.

Peter

Hey Peter, you listed the best ones.

        My FREE list is:

        - Firefox - reliable than IE and not Microsoft
        - Roboform - accurate and time saving
        - Thunderbird - I used Eudora early (it is also good)
        - Open Office - possible to solve many things by it
        - Gmail (a little problem was today with it but it may to bear because of its versatility)
        - Google analitics - for measure and change
        - NVU - for making simple websites

        Not FREE:

        - McAfee - the safety of your data and website is first
        - Smart DD - for safety digital delivery
        - Smart FTP - file transfer protocol
        - Paypal - accept and accomplish payment

I think, they are enough for a beginner. You may upgrade later.

        Just my 2 cents.

As I suspected, there are some real obvious ones that I missed out and yes, Mr Taylor, five is nowhere near enough.

This thread is a lot more interesting than I thought it would be! With the variety of answers it's actually quite a good resource. I'll be checking out some apps that I'm not familiar with.

      Thanks

Just thought I'd take a peek, but when I started looking, I've found several programs I'll definitely have to look into. I have used RoboForm, Textpad, and Filezilla for a long time, and love them. I'm going back and forth between IE and Mozilla. There are things about Mozilla that drive me crazy.

    Great post!

If you like the open source apps you listed like firefox, thunderbird, and open office, then try GIMP - the open source version of photoshop. Tons of bucks saved and just as powerful.

There are few "must have" apps. Although it would greatly cut into my productivity, I could probably do 95% of what I do with the following:

Browser - Many of the programs listed above have free online alternatives
FTP (I use leachftp, but there are a dozen other free ones that would work)
Text editor w/multi file search/replace (I use Textpad, but others would do)
Graphics program (I have photoshop, but could use one of many others)
Clipmate or other multi clipboard program.

Maybe I'm taking the question more literally than others, but while I've bought and used tons and tons of programs, most make tasks easier or better, but are not absolutely essential.

Skype - great affordable communications technique.
Firefox - takes all hassle out of web browsing.
Open Office - totally free and does everything microsoft can!
FTP - always the best client host, and reliable too.
Outlook - manage all of the emails quickly and efficiently.

      Hi JD

Your question's a bit off topic and warrants a better answer than I'm going to give right now. Be bold and post it as a question in the main forum. If you do a search for 'autoresponder' (using the Search facility at the top of the page) you'll see there's been a host of questions about autoresponders; which one's the best, how to use them etc but not too many discussions on why you should have one.

Go on - ask the question! If you do, I promise to reply in that thread.
