Be Honest - Are you just posting to get exposure for the WSO in your signature?

Am I being cynical, or are too many people here just trying to get eyeballs to their signature file?

I'm talking about those who have big flashy banner adverts and post multiple times to a thread without actually adding anything to the post. Was it the only golden nugget of advice you got taught in a cheap product that you should have really refunded on?

If you don't genuinely have a passion and interest to help others who would be ideal customers then I'm afraid that the seasoned people will see through you and bang all creditability has gone.

The signature file here is a nice bonus for people to find more information about you, not a place to sell your wares.

I wouldn't say too many; but there are a couple that I notice and it can get kind of annoying. They're always easy to find though, and more often than not I just send them to the ignore list.

I'll be honest I don't know what goes anymore! I've just been had up on an 'Infraction' for self-promotion or something that was never really explained but all I did was place one link!!!! ??!!

I've seen signatures that are five lines and over four links am I supposed to be reporting these people? Because I've been reported for self promotion?! Dunno what gives here! That's what I thought this forum was about - learning to make money and actually making money.

If we can't self-promote what the hell are we all doing here?

The thread is gone now, so I can't see exactly what you did. From the note that Mark left (and he has proven himself trustworthy in my eyes at least) though you went into the Copywriting forum to advertise your copywriting service. There are paid sections for that .

"What goes" around here is actually pretty simple. You earn the right to have that signature link at the bottom of all of your posts. How do you earn it? By posting something useful and on topic, not something that serves the sole purpose of putting eyes on your offer.

It's easy to figure out if your post meets that standard. Take the signature away when reading it and ask yourself "is this still useful to the forum at large?" If you answered yes, then you have earned the right to have the signature for that post.

You report the signature if it goes against signature file rules. Go read them. Other than that, you can report individual posts that seem to only serve the purpose of advertising the signature, or posts that blatantly say "check out my sig (yes, people are that dumb).

When someone clearly ask something very direct like "where can I get free stock photos?" or, "Where to get free images for my websites..?" or "Where can I get cheap high quality stock photos for my client's website..?" is it still dumb if I come in and say something like "bla bla bla bla ..... check my sig for more information...." or something to that effect?

If its dumb, I think you should jolly well erase your own signatures too. I am sure you don't want to be seen as dumb too right?

If you do it once in conjunction with many meaningful posts it may pass. If you search for relevant threads and say "check my sig" in most of your posts, it won't pass and the posts will be deleted and you risk getting banned or losing your signature privileges altogether.

The signatures are allowed. Self promotion and dropping links in the posts to your sites are not allowed. What kind of discussion forum do you think this would be if everyone just posted all the links they wanted to and self promoted as much as they wanted to?

Well, it would be nothing but spam. Meaningful discussions would cease due to all the spam noise. If you want to self promote, launch a WSO, or Classified, or Warriors for Hire, or whatever. This forum gives you ample opportunities to pay for advertising, but it does not allow you to use the disucssion forums for that purpose.

    Hi Andrew,

I would say regardless of the reason for posting, people who post to threads multiple times (or once) with little or nothing to say or to answer/help are simply hurting themselves - signature or not.

Quality counts. On your site, in your emails, or in the forums. In my opinion, people who create quality in whatever form are those that have the intent to actually help others and the industry. This is tangible and people can tell. Thus, more people will click on their sigs or sign up for their list or buy their product. And I don't see any harm in this really - especially in IM forums where people are actively looking for services and products.

Also, there aren't any set standards types of people other than what they post/share. In other words, there are newbies with 500+ posts and experienced successful IMers that sell products left and right with less than 100 posts. There are people with giant or multiple links in their sig and then others with nothing at all - and again, from all 'level's of post count.

I saw a sig today that made me laugh. It wasn't a link, just text. It said something like:

" Insert huge income claim here "

Well, now that you ask ... I've seen a few members who were using Blogger blogs for monetized and/or attempted traffic-generation purposes reporting here that after using them without any adverse incidents (sometimes for many years), shortly after they've listed them in sig-files in this forum, those sites have been removed by Blogger.

I don't suggest that Blogger themselves are necessarily to blame over the timing of the sudden enforcement of their terms of service. It could be, for instance, that competitors notice them and decide to "flag" them, and that that's what it really depends on.

What seems certain, though, is that Blogger's interpretations of their own terms of service in this regard are rather idiosyncratic and inconsistent, and that displaying a link to a Blogger page in a Warrior Forum sig-file is taking a chance.

Sorry Andrew, but you're wrong. You can put just about whatever you want in your signature file as long as you follow the rules. So of course, you can't put affiliate links in there, nor can you use a bunch of different colors, et al. But if you want to sell your own products there or plug your blog, you absolutely can.

I've seen some really clever signature files where people make some creative uses of their 5 line maximum.

This is a forum for money makers.

Everything should be done with making money as the end result. In case you didn't know, selling stuff is an important part of helping people. It's the key to our current economic system.

So if someone posts with the sole purpose of attracting clicks in their signature that's a good thing. Of course, the only way this strategy is effective is when the poster adds valuable content.

Be Honest - Are you just posting to get exposure for the WSO in your signature?
Nope...and most of the time I don't use a signature. When I do put something in it, it doesn't change what I respond to or how I respond.

Does it happen? Absolutely - it's not hard to spot the patterns of those who start threads or post only to get their signature viewed. The difference is they're typically not adding any real value to the forums they post to.

It a way, it's why the most recent Google update slapped so many mediocre sites - they weren't adding any value.

Being allowed to have a signature in the WF is a terrific benefit, but those who approach it the same way they do their SEO are completely missing the boat on the purpose of this community.

Those who routinely participate, adding value to the discussions that take place are the only signatures I ever click on. As far as I'm concerned, they've earned my trust and respect and I wouldn't begrudge them their signatures for anything.

Cyberdog1 you were given an infraction by me for blatantly advertising your Warrior For Hire thread for article writing of all things in the Copywriting Forum.

The Copywriting Forum is for the discussion of copywriting not article or content writing.

Your thread wasn't posed as a question to get a conversation going between members of this sub-forum - your thread was absolutely blatant self promotion.

In other words a spammed advertisement only.

Basically you stated just this in your thread, "Hey guys check out my new Warrior for Hire thread for article writing and what's more... I can now create articles for you in Chinese too."

That was it. Nothing more. No question posed. You wasn't looking for a critique. You certainly wasn't looking to start a discussion about some aspect of copywriting.

It was just a blatant self promotional thread which has subsequently been removed from the forum.

I suggest to you Cyberdog1 that you become more fully conversant with the rules concerning blatant self promotion and in future, please do post in the correct forum.

The Copywriting Forum as stated is not for the discussion of article writing or content writing or to be used to create threads for the sole intention of pointing other Warrior members to your promotions elsewhere on the forum.

An infraction btw serves as a warning only. There's no need to take it quite so badly, especially when you brought this on yourself.

Fine, I apologise for that. I thought that was okay because we pay for something within the forum and then link back to it. No worries it's all cleared up now.

But on that basis I can send you over a hundred people who do the same thing every day but they word things differently and get away with it. Well that's just not fair so if I make a list of everyone who advertises within their posts would you accept that?

This forum is for discussion obviously I'm fully aware of that but it is also A great place to advertise and thousands of people use it for advertising. This is obvious by fact we have to pay for advertising. I agree it should not be done in the post and I'm sorry for that.

But for those who just say everyone uses it to simply discuss and ask questions then I guess you want to start reading more of the posts and see the blatant self-promotion techniques people are using.

Or not. If you see someone blatantly self promoting, hit the report post button. That way the moderators can see it and deal with it. You better be sure though, as it won't reflect well on you to be reporting a bunch of posts that have no problem.

I get the feeling that what you are seeing is people who post on topics relevant to their signature. It is natural, and is OK as long as they aren't only trying to point people to their sig. Do the thing I told you before. Read the post without their sig. Is is just as valuable and helpful? If yes, then they have earned the right to have that sig file. Paul (moderator) stated pretty much those exact words in one of the rules threads up top.

Good, glad you understand. There are certain sections for that and very good reasons to have them separated.

Trust me, if we catch it then we report it (like the troll who at this very moment is spamming for their Google service). There definitely aren't as many as you seem to think though, especially not blatant promotions.

There's a red reporting triangle alongside each post. Click on it and send your report into the moderators if you think a post is breaking the rules. This is what it's there for.

First though, make sure you're fully acquainted with the rules yourself so you don't end up wasting the moderators time.

If you want to promote your services Cyberdog1 there are plenty of ways you can do this. Start a WSO. Create a Classified Ad thread. A Warrior For Hire thread or upgrade your signature from Basic to Advanced.

    Yes and No.

I've spent a lot of time figuring things out.

I really do enjoy helping others. No kidding!

But, I'm not a saint or anything.

As a full time internet marketer, I depend on people to join my list.

If I treat them well, with respect, helpful information, honestly, and not non stop selling, most people that sign up and get my stuff, stick with me.

So all's cool as far as I can tell.

Certainly nothing wrong with ethical promotion that falls within the guidelines.

I think there's a problem though when people try to get something for nothing.

You can't just post to get exposure for your signature.

If you try to do that it will not do you any good. You might get the exposure but if your post is stupid you will not get anything out of it.

I try to help people and if somebody likes what I say and checks out my signature: great. If they do not like the signature I still win: It's a lot of fun to just help.

Yes, I know it's a concept that cynical people don't get but it is nevertheless true.

Then why do I PAY for my banner to be there?

If someone wants to find out more about me, they can click on my name or start snooping in my social links to the left.

The sig file is most certainly for me to sell my wares.

Having said that, I don't think about my sig file when I'm posting, even when it is smart assed snarky comments. Unless of course the comments are on a thread about sig files. :p

As I've never done a WSO, the short answer is no.

I have 2 things in my sig, one is a mastermind I'm trying to get rolling that I really want to help others with, and the other has some free no opt-in reports that I think are pretty well written and useful. ( I didn't write them, but I have the right to give them away for free.)

I usually am either trying to be helpful or entertaining when I post. What can I say, I'm a giver. :-)

Well why not hit two birds with one stone? In my case, three birds. Warrior Forum is probably the biggest internet marketing forum on the net. To be honest, I joined the forum for the initial purpose of promoting my blog. But then I started reading the posting rules and different threads and stopped myself from spamming links. I've only been a member for three months. But boy did I learn so much in that time.

I'm just really thankful that I discovered this forum. Not only did it open me to a LOT of opportunities and provided traffic on my blog every now and then, but it also gave me so much free information that I won't probably see anywhere else. I get easily hooked in an interesting thread and I just can't stop myself from commenting. It's always nice to share useful ideas whether there's a hidden agenda or not..

If there's no value in your post, it doesn't matter wheter you have a sig or not, no one is going to look at it. I'll probably place a sig when I have something better for my visitors.

    I see it this way.

Everyone who comes here to the forum and posts have one goal in common. To hopefully have people click on their signature to make some sort of a sale for what ever they are selling.

Only few people out of THOUSANDS of warriors will just come here to post and have no intention to get their link in their sig.

What would happen if the warrior owner would not allow anymore link in signatures or WSO or anything that you can do to advertise your website or business? I think that many people would stop coming here.

Plenty don't even have signatures, so I don't see how this is a common goal for everyone.

Disagree with this too. Plenty of people come here first and foremost because they enjoy the conversation. That people think that signature files are the driving force behind this place is mind boggling. They are an added benefit, a bonus.

Some would leave, yes. I would wager though that the vast majority (if not all) of the Warriors who come here and regularly contribute would stay though, for the reasons stated above.

This is a marketing forum correct?

    I believe your supposed to either;

    a. Post contributing help to specific question, or giving information that is helpful in general to the masses

    b. At times when needed ask for insight or help from others

And in the process of this, your signature link, which you should have, will be visable.

I believe that having a signature link is not only an allowed payed thing here, but it's also smart marketing.

    thanks for all the comments.

I'm now ready to create my WSO on how to start a thread that will generate enough traffic to sell your new WSO...

On a more serious note I'm glad that the majority of people here are doing things properly and a lot of the comments made me laugh. I also have to agree that paying to get the banner link does make the signature stand out more, but as it takes up more space you probably will need to write more to make the post length look longer than the space it takes up. Just my personal opinion, and I'm obviously too tight to pay for this.

Overall I think if we all agree to just post our thoughts and treat the sig file as passive traffic that's a bonus for the time taken talking about the one thing we all have a passion for - selling products online then it's a win win for everyone.

Okay, now I'm just posting to remove that horrible, elongated ellipses.

As a newbie with no WSO yet, and not too many posts, I don't post just to get people drawn to my site. I do sense that there is something to the number of posts one has on the forum - a kind of legitimacy comes with more posts. Or at least I think so.

Anyhow, I work full time outside of this and although I have a site, I really haven't done much with it yet. In the meantime I read the forum when I can, and post words of encouragement or just my opinion. So it's a two-fer for me. Does that make sense? I inject my opinion or maybe just an "atta-boy" that might help others, while at the same time increasing the number of posts I have which might help me later.

yeah i see your point. everyone needs market exposure sure but ethics are important too many folks want something for nothing and devalue their environment as a result.

My sites have nothing to do with IM, I'm just hanging around here because there are a lot of people here that do have a lot to contribute and its helping me with my sites. Posting replies keeps me feeling like in involved in the conversation. The backlinks are an added bonus :-)

I would have gotten bore of posting.

Rather its about killing two birds with one stone:

    1. I help/learn and
    2. Make little money off sig ads

as long as they are providing some real value with their posts, i really don't have a problem with them promoting their stuff the power is yours to ignore their banners, and not buy their products.

if they provide value, then there is no problem in my world that is what makes this community go around!

i personally think signature hold a lot of value in IM, its like leaving a trail behind and the more your active the more exposure you get.

Saying that you don't want to get traffic through your signature would be a lie but to get the most of it we should help other members. In this way we build our reputation and at the same time we get more traffic, it's a win win deal for everyone...

Forget the signature, it's the thanks button that warriors should be clicking.

How often do you see a tremendous insightful post with free offerings of golden nugget info where fellow warriors, comment with phrase like great post and thanks.

If it was so useful to you, show your appreciation hit the THANKS BUTTON!

It is as though they are showing weakness by clicking the little thing..

The amount of posts makes no relevance to my respecting a warriors insightful comments and informative advice, it's the thanks to post ratio that does it for me!

    Rant over..

Not me, I don't have a WSO However, I don't think it would matter if people did if they had a pointless post, because people wouldn't even give it a second though, and just look past it.

      Joe,
You better be sure though, as it won't reflect well on you to be reporting a bunch of posts that have no problem.
That's not going to create problems for anyone, unless they're just abusing the reporting system in an attempt to bash someone unjustly. And it has to be pretty consistent and aggressive even then.

It's REALLY hard to get in trouble for reporting posts. Seriously. I can't remember the last time it happened. We would much rather people report something mistakenly than leave a problem unreported.
