Forum Owners present/passed

Hey, I was just curious to see. How many of you currently operate a forum or have in the passed. I am interested in starting one up for a side project. It seems if, you have a popular Forum. It could generate some pretty good revenue. I also think, it would be fun. Since it would be a niche I know a lot about and enjoy.

What where your experiences?

    Pedantic, yes. But funny... That is exactly how I read the headline to start... :p



    Operating a forum for profit is a long-term commitment.

    It may take years of daily posting to build an audience that you can monetize.

    For example, it is my understanding that the owner of this forum posted daily for years, but he did not see huge profits from the forum until the last few years.

    Of course, bear in mind that I am on the outside looking in...

    I know I have started and killed two forums... Both were killed because it was too much work staying ahead of the spammers...

      Taking off the Grammar Nazi hat for a minute :p, I technically helped run one for my high school government class. We were drafting our own class constitution and had to communicate between the six different classes.

      It ended up being a massive bitchfest; mostly because of me. I was much more trollish back in high school .

    Yes, forums can be an excellent
    source of revenue for both
    main and side projects.

    Got one although there's not much activity there for now...
    If you have the time to moderate it (spam is always a problem for any forum) I do believe it can be very good for SEO purposes. Fresh new content regularly created by others for you... My dream!

    Do you use Facebook ? Then you can make money just by inviting people to a Facebook group ! It's called the Instant Income System. How cool is that?

      Funny, when I stopped caring about SEO
      I suddenly reduced all of my spam to zero.

      Every new registration has to be manually
      approved now, and new members are only
      accepted if they are referred by current members.

    Just launched my Forum MKII.
    Last time I got smashed by spammers looking for links, It was horrible and I swore I would never do it again.

    But The domain was sitting their, google closed domain parking, so i launched again with a very high anti-spam system.

    I also launched a blog to go alongside the forum.

    I'm pretty sure my niche is big enough to support the forum, I'm not doing for the money YET, It is an Itch I have wanted to scratch for a while so here I go again.

    Obviously that's the site in the signature.

    I really dig wordpress so why not share the knowledge and see what happens.

    One way to slow spammers down is to do the same as here: links forbidden until you have x posts... That way only the users who are really contributing to the forum can post links.

      Yeah, but then you are encouraging spammers to spam tons of useless posts to get to the point where they can spam links.

      Every simple step has an equal and opposite unexpected result.

      Not really, that just gets the junk posters
      to come along and post tons of spun crap
      until they reach their "x" number of posts.

    Ok, thank you all for the information! After I get my first check from IM(hoping within a month) I am going to put some of it into another domain, and forum script.

    I Believe, I have what it takes to get this type of Forum popular. Sure it wont happen over night, but if I work hard on it, like I do with my other two sites. It will come together....
