It is also useful if a link is going to be around for a long time and the offer could change.

So if you release a free ebook with affiliate links you can cloak them. Then if the product changes or a better one is available all you have to do is update the cloaked link and all the ebooks that have been floating around still have viable links.

For example, you launch an ebook years ago on building niche sites and promote "Google Sniper" with cloaked affiliate links. Later when "Google Sniper 2" comes out you could change the redirect to your new affiliate link.

Anyone picking up a found digital copy somewhere will have current links that still pay you rather than outdated links to expired offers.

It's probably a good idea to set all such links to nofollow. Also, if you use the PHP redirect code, use directories and set your robots.txt file to disallow crawling/indexing of those directories. No sense giving Google an easy path to all those aff. links on your site.

Wp Traffic Tools provides a free link masking & cloaking module. It also provides a premium version and a handful of other modules.

Link Masking & Affiliate Link Shorteners with Wp...

But it should be noted that cloaking denotes preventing spiders from realizing the redirect destination while masking denotes changing the URL structure (similar to shortening)

If you're not using wordpress and you don't feel like implementing your own php thing you might like cloaker.codegeckos.com

You can pick your redirect method (301, js, frame, meta refresh, ...) and brand your links like so:

red.irect.me/ YOUR BRAND / PRODUCT

or

red.irect.me/ YOUR BRAND / CATEGORY / PRODUCT

Keep in mind all those who are referring to 'pretty link' are not mentioning that you will have to buy the pro version for 40 bucks, as pretty link lite (the one on wordpress.org) does not cloak links. I found that out the hard way and had to change all my links.

Its well worth the price as its a good quality plugin, but if you want to go a for free option, then I posted up the following method as a few people ask about this:

I re-developed a link cloaking software which I now offer for free. There are upgrades but the free version does everything you need it to and you can set a redirect option to satisfy finicky affiliate programs. You can also edit, delete links, track clicks etc etc. The upgrades are for branding etc etc.

I use acloaker.com
You copy and paste the aff link, they'll give you a ready-made HTML file. Just cut and paste the HTML file to your cpanel folder, i.e. folder "recommends". It only takes less than 3 minutes to cloak

I suggest that you don't really worry too much about
link cloaking.

Just keep it simple.

What if OP wants to avoid SERP loss through non cloaked links?

The pretty part is the least useful part of link cloaking.

I like using BudURL.com as a link shortener and cloaker. It also allows me to make tracking links, see how many clicks I'm getting and exactly where they come from. I even get the IP address, so I know where the visitor is geographically. Pretty cool in my opinion. It's a couple of bucks a month, but totally worth it to me for what I'm getting.

For Wordpress try the 'Simple Link Cloaker' or 'Pretty Link' plugins. Pretty Link will even track the number of clicks.

To cloak links you need to write down how you want to do this and what you want to get in result.

There are 2 types of links cloaking.

1. You just want to pass visitor to destination URL. Usually you use two codes: 301 and 307. Using any of it means that search bots (Bing, Google and etc.) will not index your website.

2. You want not only to pass visitor to destination URL, but want to build an authority brand. In this case you can pass all your links through one single domain. Visitors will pass to destination URL and will visit your website. It means that visitor originally will visit your website, you will get traffic and you will pass visitor through. To do this you need code 200.

I prefer second option, because this method increase my positions in Google (code 200 is good for SEO) and visitors will see destination URL.

I didn't find any cloaking software that will allow me to create redirection with code 200, so developed my own - onRedirect.

There are so many....

I'd suggest pretty link.. they have a free version.

This works on wordpress, and is the grand daddy, if you simply want to change the link people click.

Some more advanced cloaking options where you can hide page source and things like that, samauri stealth cloaker... but if you're just starting out, go with pretty link.

You can use this ONLY if you are redirecting at the domain level, because this script is used ONLY in the .htaccess file.

Its a bit hard to stop page scrapers from disclosing your links .. and if anyone is really going to go to that extent .. well hmm ..

But, stopping your standard php curl is easier.
You could go with your own brand of 64 bit encode with secret key for your link/s but the links wont look 'pretty'

just a thought!

with wp cloak wizard you can track your cloaked links , same with prettylink.

Here is a 'little known' plugin that kicks ass all over Pretty Link

The big difference is that it also tracks seo keyword sales
at the same time.

Another great tool is Easy Redirect Script.

PRO: It shows the product's link without showing our affiliate ID... so it looks very natural to the visitor.

CON: We cannot see the performance of all of my affiliate links from all of my websites from 1 dashboard.

I have heard of ninja affiliate link cloaker but I have only heard of one recommendation in this thread so I'm wondering how good it really is? I'm having the issue with trying to find the best solution for cloaking and tracking of my links. The problem you have with services like linktrackr is that if you decide to use another service or method you loose all your affiliate links that you have promoted in the past.

Most of the time I will create a website with a redirect, so it would be like warforum.com if I could have that domain and was referring to warrior forum, rather than warriorforum.com/ref=1.

Other times I just use goo.gl, it has nice tracking and is simple and fast and free.

It's too much work to have to edit and upload a php file for every link you want to cloak.
