Google Fighting For Its Life

Hi,

Here is an excerpt from a news article where Google is really facing issues.

Next, the company was charged by another US agency, the Federal Communications Commission (FEC), with deliberately impeding and delaying an investigation into allegations that automobiles it was using to map streets were also collecting sensitive personal information from wireless home networks.

European and Canadian regulators who have examined the data Google collected in the project in their own countries found that it included complete email messages, instant messages, chat sessions, conversations between lovers, and web addresses revealing sexual orientation - all information that could be linked to specific street addresses. Google called the data collection a "mistake". Whereas earlier controversies generally focused on information that users chose to provide, with its Street View project, Google took data from people who did not even know it.
Here are the rest of the news.

What is your opinion about it all?

Maybe it was a mistake. I cannot imagine any middle manager at Google thinking that it was a good idea to capture private data like email during their mapping of locations.

Maybe it was just a rogue employee or a rogue coder within the company.

Regardless, I don't see this as an issue for which they will be seen as "fighting for their life".

In the corporate world, companies make "mistakes" all the time. The government catches them, fines them, and the company pays the fine. Then life goes on as normal.

It is also a fact that some companies break the rules on purpose, because the profits earned from the action will exceed the anticipated fine levied when they get caught. LOL

Google were caught doing the same thing in France, Canada and USA. So it can't be rogue employees.

I think so too. They weighed the risk factor as cost. The NET MARGIN too lucrative to ignore even after the penalties.

As of 2013 every electronic communication in the USA will be harvested and copies stored on the NSA'a computers located in Utah.

        Every electronic communication.

Google is nothing to worry about compared to the police state.

Google executives supported the current administration when it was running for office.

          Coincidence?

Maybe Google gets fined, but is it remotely possible that they were testing the technology for some future police state agency?

Google and Facebook as the leaders in web data collection are said to be working closely with agencies who desire the technology to intercept electronic data.

Of course as such, the friendlier the environment is towards data collection the more they can exercise their abilities.

Also remember that in 2015 every new car will be equipped with a black box that will monitor every nuance of your automobile habits. Go 55 mph in a 20 mph zone and don't be surprised if a ticket shows up in the mail...

          LOLz

When I was younger, I had heard a story that there was a good chance that every time I went outside, a military satellite was tracking my movements.

So I made it a habit that every time I stepped outside, I waved at the poor chap tasked with keeping an eye on me.

If all of my communications are being recorded starting next year, I will start inserting humor into my emails for the guy tasked with reading my email.

If I can keep the NSA officers in stitches, I will have fulfilled my purpose to be put on this planet. :p

Or marked as a target, because the last thing they need is a bunch of funny people keeping up the morale of the resistance.

All this broohaha seem to be like a collective method to condition our minds that, there would be no more privacy for everyone.

              Really hate it.

                I completely agree.

The best way to remove resistance is to chip away at it slowly.

Here's something else to keep in mind...anything that is Patentable can only be done under the stipulation that if your partner in the Patent, the US Government in the case of US Patents, decides they need to use the technology for "National Security Purposes" you are required to hand it over to them. Actually, they just take it.

And if you add to that the HFT (high frequency trading) algos that have been created to read newstories, et al, in order to front run the financial markets you can see the convergence of technologies is ripe for abuse. So it is happening with our blessing as avid watchers of benign distractions. The typical citizen can tell you who won DWTS but has no clue who their representative in government is. Nor are they up to speed on what path technology is taking us down.

So if it turns out all this Google talk is nothing but a contrived misdirection don't be surprised.

                ~Bill

Bill- are you aware that you're approaching the 8,000 post mark?

And by the rate of how often you post- I'll say you'll get those last 75 in the next 5-10 minutes.

You betta have a speech ready.

Google has been collecting personal/sensative information since they start (or almost). Tey've always gotten away with it too as TPW mentions in his post above.

Is it wrong? Yes, in my opinion it is. Will they have trouble? No, I seriously doubt it - they will get a fine at best, and then go on as usual.

Yeah i'm with TPW. While I'm sure Google wishes that didn't happen and is unhappy about the situation... I don't think under any circumstance this could be even remotely close to Google thinking this is the end for them. lol..

But that's pretty messed up when private information is compromised in such a way...

This is a criminal act... Don't look at my pitch because it's true.

What in the world are they gonna do with such confidential and sensitive data?

That's a criminal act that requires a heavy fine.

P.S I have not grudge against Goooogle.

This is the game of Business. The FTC investigate the giant companies. The giant companies sue each others every time about stealing ideas, stealing the code platform, privacy and much more.

If they collect this info just for the purpose of improving their services; it's OK. But if Google just steal the user privacy then the FTC must stop Google and fines it.
