amazon affiliate question

9 replies
say, someone clicked a link on social site which links to my own site, and on my own site, I redirect it to an amazon affiliate link (linking to product A), will I get the commission if the order was placed?

Later on, the same visitor placed another order for Product B, will I get the commission too? or, I only get the commission for Product A?

just start affiliate for amazon, thanks

    It could work if the original site doesn't strip your affiliate code like pinterest does. Just test a link on the social site and see if your affiliate id is still in the link. If it is then yes you'll get credit for the purchase. The cookie they put in is only good for 24 hours. So if they buy product B withing 24 hours then yes you'll get credit for it.

    However, I believe if they put product A or B in their cart and then buy it within 90 days you get credit. I believe that's the length.

    You may get in trouble for doing this however if you get a manual review from amazon. Just read the TOS and find out.

    Amazon is down to a 1-day session cookie. Product A, yes. You should also get a commission for Product B, unless the buyer had re-entered Amazon other than through your link to make the purchase.

    If they clicked on a link from your website to Amazon that has your affiliate id then you will get credit for anything they purchase in the next 24 hours.

    Now if they click to Amazon from your website then go to another amazon affiliate website and click on their link then you are out of the race for getting commission because now the cookie points to the last affiliate that sent that customer to Amazon.

    From where they come to your website is irrelevant.

      Jennifer, respectfully, although all of that is of course correct, none of it actually relates to Snapping's question at all. He isn't asking about anything that happens after anyone clicks an Amazon affiliate link on his site.

      He's asking about what happens if someone clicks on a third-party site a link to his url which is itself redirected to an Amazon affiliate link.

      I thought that was contrary to Amazon's terms of service, myself, but I haven't checked it specifically, and I may well be mistaken about it (and the fact that Brian Kindsvater has already replied and not said that suggests to me that I probably am mistaken about it).

        Very good point. It may depend how the redirect works.

        If you are using cloaked links to redirect then cloaking the affiliate link to something like mysite.com/sony1456HD and using that for Pinterest or facebook might not violate ToS.

        But while using cloaked redirects on your own site may be fine, using your cloaked links on a 3rd party site like facebook or Pinterest may not.

        It would be good to know this as that is a recommended tactic for a lot of methods to get around link stripping/spam filters.

    thanks for the replies. what I plan to do is:

    1) post picture/story on pinterest/facebook/tweet/... link back to my site use general link with no affiliate id, mysite.com/storyname;
    2) on my site, redirect to amazon or other site with my id;

    will this work? will it be problem with amazon, pinterest or others?

    just start this and want to make sure it is ok to do this.

    thanks

      Can't find anything that says your case of redirection is against Amazon's Operating Agreement.

      But this sentence in Amazon's Link Requirements might be of your consideration.

      "In addition, you must not use a link shortening service in a manner that makes it unclear that you are linking to an Amazon Site."

      Later on, the same visitor placed another order for Product B, will I get the commission too? or, I only get the commission for Product A?
      From Amazon's Operating Agreement:
      a "Qualifying Purchase" occurs when
      (a) a customer clicks through a Special Link on your site to the Amazon Site;
      (b) during a single Session that customer either
      (i) adds a Product to his or her shopping cart and places the order for that Product no later than 89 days following the customer's initial click-through,
      (ii) purchases a Product via our 1-Click feature, or
      (iii) streams or downloads a Product from the Amazon Site if the Product is a Digital Product; and (c) the Product is shipped to or streamed or downloaded by, and paid for by, the customer.

      Hope it helps

    If the visitors place other orders at the same day he clicked your affiliate link, you will get the commission, but if he places other orders at different day, you will not get any revenue...Because Amazon's cookie is just 24 hours...

    My understanding of Amazon's TOS is you have to send your visitor to Amazon from your own website via your Affiliate link, this means you would NOT be allowed to use a link from any other place to directly send the visitor to Amazon as this is against Amazon's TOS as I understand it.

    This means you would not be able to add a link to Amazon from lets say a youtube video, you would have to direct them to your own site first and then onwards to Amazon.

    I have always thought that if I use a pretty link that is hosted on my site and use that on Youtube or elsewhereto directly link to amazon since the link actually goes to my site first then redirects to Amazon however this is gaming the system so to be safe I just direct to my review page.

    Kickin it on Amazon
