Daddy, What Do You Do?
  • Right answer: "I help companies to grow really fast by teaching them how to sell bigger companies much larger orders."
  • Wrong answer: "Our company helps develop inside of our clients a replicable and scalable process for them to land large accounts."
Why Do People Decide to Hire You?
  • Right answer: "We have helped lots of companies do this before, so we are really good at it as long as they are the right type of companies."
  • Wrong answer: "We have a proven process for implementation that allows organizations to tailor the model to their market, business offering and company's growth goals."
Why Don't They Do It Themselves?
  • Right answer: "Just like when you learned to play the piano: Mommy and I could teach a little, but we don't know as much as your teacher, and teaching you ourselves would take a long time and be very frustrating. Daddy is a really good teacher of how to make bigger sales, and people want to learn how to do this as fast as they can."
  • Wrong answer: "We are the foremost expert in this field with over $5 billion in business that our clients have closed using this system. Usually our clients have tried a number of things on their own before we work together and have wanted outside help to get better results."

    Hahaha!

This is good. The thing is a lot of people use complicated language because they believe it makes them appear more important. Anyway...

The sad thing is that those Wrong Answers don't hold a candle to most of the stuff I look at during the day job hours.

One of the most important things to bear in mind whilst copywriting is to keep your sales language simple.

So simple in fact even a 9 year old can understand what is being said.

The Right answer: above does exactly this.

The Wrong answer: is corporate speak gobbledegook which might look impressive but convinces nobody of anything at all.

Therefore which is more intelligent from a salemanship point of view? Long convoluted expressions or turns of phrase or... extremely simple language?

The more direct you can be whilst keeping your written sales language as simple as possible the more conversions and therefore profit you will make.

A person that is confused tends not to buy, regardless of how good a product or service is. That's why keeping things "simple-stupid" (not meant in a demeaning way) is so effective in sales.

The last question and the right answer is what made the whole sense to me.

Unless your market is fluent in Corporatese, you're better off sticking with English.

I don't like to hear complicated language when I am being sold something because I don't like to waste my time thinking about what the person is trying to say rather than just deciding if I want to make a purchase or not. So if the salesperson doesn't present their products or services in a simple stupid way then I don't even want to hear their pitch. More importantly, I want to know how the product/service can help me rather than hearing some wordy pitch.

Here is what the kids should be told, but we lie to them like we lie to ourselves and everyone else. We are now stuck in a BOOM-BUST zero-growth cycle. You cant grow your way out of the mess we are in at this point. Standards of living will drop, and the middle class will shrink and eventually disappear.

"There's a reason for this, there's a reason education sucks, and it's the same reason it will never ever, ever be fixed. It's never going to get any better. Don't look for it. Be happy with what you've got... because the owners of this country don't want that. I'm talking about the real owners now... the real owners. The big wealthy business interests that control things and make all the important decisions. Forget the politicians. The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don't. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you. They own everything. They own all the important land. They own and control the corporations. They've long since bought and paid for the Senate, the Congress, the state houses, the city halls. They got the judges in their back pockets and they own all the big media companies, so they control just about all of the news and information you get to hear. They got you by the balls. They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying. Lobbying to get what they want. Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else, but I'll tell you what they don't want. They don't want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don't want well-informed, well-educated people capable of critical thinking. They're not interested in that. That doesn't help them. That's against their interests. That's right. They don't want people who are smart enough to sit around a kitchen table and think about how badly they're getting screwed by a system that threw them overboard 30 years ago. They dont want that. You know what they want? They want obedient workers. Obedient workers, people who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork. And just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly crappier jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it. And now they're coming for your Social Security money. They want your retirement money. They want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street. And you know something? They'll get it. They'll get it all from you sooner or later 'cause they own this place. It's a big club and you ain't in it. You and I are not in the big club. By the way, it's the same big club they use to beat you over the head with all day long when they tell you what to believe. All day long beating you over the head with their media telling you what to believe, what to think and what to buy. The table is tilted, folks. The game is rigged and nobody seems to notice. Nobody seems to care. Good, honest, hard-working people: white collar, blue collar, it doesn't matter what color shirt you have on. Good, honest, hard-working people continue - these are people of modest means - continue to elect these rich creeps who don't give a crap about them. They don't give a crap about you. They don't care about you at all! At all! At all! And nobody seems to notice. Nobody seems to care. That's what the owners count on. The fact that Americans will probably remain willfully ignorant of the big red, white and blue fist that's being jammed up their rear every day, because the owners of this country know the truth. It's called the American Dream, 'cause you have to be asleep to believe it."
