Hello Friends,

I added a WP blog awhile back to a static site I have. I was messing around in dashboard and decided that my blog URL needed to look different from the mysite dot com/WordPress URL. So I changed it to mysite dot com/blog both in the WP dashboard and in my hosting files. Well, now it don't work!

What can I do to fix this. It won't even let me loggin to the admin area.

  • If you revert to the original address you should be able to get your blog back.

Changing an address is a bit like moving house. You can say you live at number 49 but your house will still be where it was (eg. at number 435) but if all you do is paint a different number on your front door, nobody will be able to find you unless they are prepared to search the length and breadth of the street looking for the address you claim to live at.

If you are going to move the blog, you need to physically move it so that all aspects of it are at the new address.
  • When you say you changed it in the hosting files what exactly do you mean - did you physically move it as per artwebsters post?

One other way to do this would be to just install a new copy of WordPress in the desired location (yoursite/blog) and configure it with the same theme and plugins. Then export your existing posts and other data with the WordPress Admin utility, and import it into the new site. Delete the original installation after you verify that the new one is functioning correctly.

  • In my experience the .COM blogs and the .ORG blogs
are different beasts. The self hosted blogs do not transfer
well from the WP hosted ones and vice versa. For instance,
getting your API key on a self hosted blog requires that you
get a .COM blog and use that key. It's a little back-woods,
    but it works.

I think Bill's advice might be the easiest way to avoid any
    more heart-ache.

    • Sorry I wasn't more specific. I changed the name in my WP admin panel from mysite.com/WordPress to mysite.com/blog.

Then, I went into my hosting account an renamed the WordPress file to Blog. That's when it all went haywire. So I went back into WP and changed the ext back to WordPress and renamed the file in my hosting account back to WordPress as well.

I guess I'll take Bill's advice and try that.

      Thank you guys
