Question about list building ?

I'm doing some research about how to build a list and I wanted to know
Is it better to offer a free ebook or is it better to offer a newsletter ?
Please explain why you would offer either one ?

Thanks a bunch

I don't think it matters.. as long as it's a GOOD quality free
    product
it all comes down to a good old-fashioned bribe for that lead
check out ListBuilding Maniac.. he will help you learn this stuff

    my 2 cents

Free eBook, hands down. You will get a much higher opt in rate.

And for a squeeze page, the simpler the better.

Simple answer? You need to test. If you don't know what your readers want, how would you expect us to? They're your readers.

Anyways, from personal experience in my niches this holds true:

an eBook can cover more ground. It all depends what your market is looking for. As long as you give them what they want. Also an eBook they won't feel like they have to be waiting around for your emails to receive the information they wanted right now.

The idea is to get opt in's so your offer should be something of value that your targeted visitor wants obviously they should want it enough to take action and be motivated enough to enter there email. I find newsletters are a bit dated these days every offers one and who really wants it?

I know I just ignore them unless it is something that I am super interested in.

A quality give away however has much broader appeal and higher perceived value.

I'll have to agree with an eBook. Today everyone wants information but doesnt want to pay an arm and a leg. If you offer a free eBook thats seen to have immense value. People will definitely opt in more for that rather than a newletter.

Here is one small piece of advice that I wish I knew sooner

Don't call it an ebook, call it a free report on "something that people in your niche want to know"

Just like others have mentioned you will only know when you start testing.

to start with you want to keep things nice and simple

just offer a free quality gift

once you start the ball rolling then you can make tweaks and changes to your system/funnel

if you try and do everything at the start and try to get all the whistles and bells in place you will just waste time

you cn build a perfectly good and big list by just offering a high quality free gift and go from there

in my experience, definitelly an ebook...but I have to agree with others that it depends highly on the niche

ok guys, another query, someone mentioned testing earlier on, say you are offering a freebie but it's just an ok product and then you find something better but you have already made lots of links/mails based on the first product, how then do you add the new product to your site - would the solution be that you offer two freebies on your site?

also in terms of the squeeze page itself, do you guys make a standalone squeeze page on its own domain name or include it as a part of your site/blog - what is mroe effective?

I think the better question would be "why are you only counting on an 'OK' product to get members onto your list?" Short selling them from the start isn't exactly a great way to start building the relationship.

Anyways, if I find another relevant incentive that I can give away to my list I just plug it into my next newsletter as "a little something for ya, free of charge ."

I personally don't use squeeze pages. I have an opt in prominently displayed across all pages on my website. This is a matter of personal preference as well as going with testing results.

You'll have to figure out what works better with members of your list.

I would offer the free newsletter. It is free and people do sign up for it.

You should test both to see which one gets you more people signing up to your list.

Yes, both is better. The ebook provides an incentive for the person to sign up then you can build relationships and sell through the newsletter. Aweber is great for this.

I offer both free ebook initially for them to opt in.

After that I'll follow them up with newsletters in my autoresponder :-)

    Hope it helps.
