President Obama's Speech To Congress And Your Online Business

This is not unique to Obama, but about any US president's
speech to congress uses this technique of persuasion.

You know, along with the big number statistics there is a story
of that soldier, that little girl, that ordinary mother ... and
they are there as "exhibit A" in the chambers the night of the
speech.

Well, it's hard to get people respond to statistics--just cold
numbers. "36,000 killed in Abgatanz ..." Well, ... OK.
But place a mother of one of those killed in the room and the
situation becomes more personal. Now you have people's
attention.

For example, last night in his speech, this is how Obama used
this technique:

I think about Ty'Sheoma Bethea, the young girl from that school
I visited in Dillon, South Carolina, a place where the ceilings
leak, the paint peels off the walls, and they have to stop
teaching six times a day because the train barrels by their
classroom.

She had been told that her school is hopeless. But the other day
after class, she went to the public library and typed up a letter
to the people sitting in this chamber. She even asked her
principal for the money to buy a stamp.

The letter asks us for help and says, "We are just students
trying to become lawyers, doctors, congressmen like yourself, and
one day president, so we can make a change to not just the state
of South Carolina, but also the world. We are not quitters."

That's what she said: "We are not quitters."

These words and these stories tell us something about the spirit
of the people who sent us here. They tell us that, even in the
most trying times, amid the most difficult circumstances, there
is a generosity, a resilience, a decency, and a determination
that perseveres, a willingness to take responsibility for our
future and for posterity.

Sounds a lot more convincing than "4 million inner-city kids
don't have proper school buildings"

So what does this have to do with online marketing?

Instead of quoting mere statistics, pick one person's STORY and
use that as support. This would bring your marketing message
home.

It may not win you the presidency, but more sales!

Great point. You are spot on, as these stories appeal to our emotions, and give us a better visualization of the possible outcome.

Once you figure that out, then you might figure out why it's so easy to sell anything you can think of.

I think I read somewhere that Hindus believe our world is just someone's ( one of their gods ) dream.

But the personal & storytelling ( in many situations ) makes for better marketing.

I am reminded of top flight online marketer Joe Vitale & his works.

For sure, but I'm not talking here just about using stories but using
    stories INSTEAD of just statistics
. Many sales letter I've read that
give some big numbers as evidence when a personal story about
one of those stats would have worked better.

For sure stories are powerful tools, but we don't often think about
using them to support the stats.

Hi Ray, I agree with you 100%

I did this very thing in a post I made here in the WF a while back and and
the thread exploded with positive replies.

      Thanks for the reminder!
      Have a Great Day!

I know what you mean Michael. Look at all those "STORIES threads"
we've had in the forum where people gave their stories about
how they made money online, along with their LIFE STORY ...
their children, husband, debt, new house ... they all resonate
with us because we are people to, not just BUSINESS people.

Charity appeals use this one technique as well. They give the
story about Juan in Honrantas who has no clean water, no
shoes, no medical help. But Juan represents millions.

Where the "millions" don't get our heart's string, Jaun's story does.

Ray, you are very right, the narration of a story gives a lot push on the selling in order for everybody to understand its' moral.

I liked to read Gary Halbert letters because of this, among other people.

Stories are one of the most powerful tools that we have at our disposal. There have been many books written about how to become a better leader through the art of storytelling. People are able to remain interested and connect better when you tell them a story. It also increases their understanding and involvement. All of this is extremely important for what we are trying to do online. I think this is a really great thread.

I think this is what Frank Kern does and someday he'll be President.

I liked Obama speech and nobody smiles as great as he does.

I don't think presidents are allowed to have a beard, so Frank will
have to shave. The smile is OK though.

Then he may be considered ... he may have to hire some secret service
      surfers as well.
