Question about conduit sites

If we are running a conduit site should we have a "top rated" section on our homepage and on sidebar? Or should it be TOTALLY just program facts? As of right now I have a homepage that and sidebar that has "top products" but i thought that might be going against the conduit theory.

If so what do you suggest on the homepage?

thanks

    Jake,

There are no 'rules' ... here are several conduit sites that have completely different layouts:

NextAdvisor.com compare financial services, self-improvement services and personal technology services

    TopTenREVIEWS Expert Product Reviews

Best Weight Loss Programs: Reviews of Diet Plans, Weight Loss Plans

Fat Loss 4 Idiots Review - Does It Work?

I've found that the less 'action' you have going on in your sidebars, headers, footers, etc., the more clickthrough's you get to affiliate offers.

As far as the homepage, I usually do one of three things.

    1) A "Review-Compare" three top rated products
    2) Create a simple questionnaire that leads the visitor to the product review that's most targeted to them
    3) A comparison chart that shows the pros, cons, and price difference between 10-20 products with links to the full review and right to the vendor page for each...similar to http://www.nextadvisor.com/

    Hope that helps

See you on the webinar! I'll be putting a conduit template in the download area soon that you can use.

Like Scott said, there's no rules. You'll just need to be honest and have several facts (includes videos or picture or effect of the review). Anyway, all products you list can give you good commission if you do the correct/good reviews.

I really like the authority style like from toptenreviews and consumersearch.com.

What I like to build in on the homepage is toprated, most viewed (social proof), latest reviews and parts of the content to lead the customer deeper into the site.

I personally like the bigsite style more then the "simple" minisite but I use both ways.

    OK. Question...

Do 'amateur-looking' review sites outpull 'professional-looking' ones?

An amateur has instant credibility (at a guess)...

The professional has a larger budget with which to build credibility...

Not sure about that. I see your point but personally think if a site looks amateuristic they better have real good content in a snap or I am gone. If I am shopping for something and need a little push in the back to see if it's a good buy or not I rather look at places like Cnet ,epinions, alatest, consumersearch.com and pricecomparison places

Maybe it's worth a test. Put up 2 different versions. one with an authority kind of look and one that's an amateur look. I love to hear the data on that.

I think it really depends on the niche/site

I've had small conduit sites with only 3 product reports that all have similar characteristics oddly that site produces several sales a week, but what I'm saying is test different things out for each site.

you can use google's website optimizer for free and it works pretty well or use google analytics. don't stick to one method, think what will work best for your particular site.

    hope this helps
